OK, so I don't screw up and buy the wrong season plugs. What should I be using for the spring? Wooden ones preferably.

The fish are on herring, the water is cold. I like medium sized surface swimmers and have also done well over the years with medium sized bottleplugs in outflows that lead to herring runs.

I use what I use all the time needles, tins, pencils, and poppers

I love using live herring, one more year I hope

pencils and dannies kill in the spring... Yozuris darters aren't wood, but they have caught when nothing else would in May and June.

Pencils and spooks like everyone. A squid plug did me well this past spring in RI when the squid were in.

Can't go wrong with what has been suggested the only added advice I can give is to think white when it comes to spring color choice.

medium size dannies and pikies with a creamy ivory yellow white bottom waggling slowly along in some cold choppy spring water :smokin:

I like to use pencils in the 6" range and but my favorite is a parrot colored pencil. Gibbs makes one just be sure to change the hooks!

Salty's 1.25 oz olive/white popper and his 1oz olive/white stubby needle.

Then the standard 4-5" white Storm type rubba.

Pt.Jude tins of many flavors are good too.Small size at the very beginning and then go big.

As others said plugs that imitate squid or herring

I know you said wood and people covered that pretty well but I will add to that a few point jude wobble heads with a pink 9" hogy or 10" fishstix is deadly when the squid are around. I got some of my best fish on it last spring. Also, tatoo's small danny looks sweet as well.

I love canal cut pencils. Don't sleep on one of those big Fin-ess with 1-2oz lead head depending on current and depth.

When the big gals are chasing the Alewifes and river herring, I like bigger Danny's, and bottles. I've caught on these types. Others fishing in the same areas, get 'em on pencils. This happens up the rivers, late April, early May.

BIG blue backed and also pink (squid) dannys, jointed pikies, pencils and darters. the spring traditonaly brings visions of herring and squid but dont over look digging out your fall pogy arsenal , pogys had a big run last spring.

i enjoy fishing the spring run better than the fall and i also get my biggest fish during the spring ,during october im mixing it up between bow hunting during the morning and striper fishing at dusk and night
