Any one heard anything about these? I was wondering if it would be a good real for bait fishing from the shore. Seems really smoothe... I'm just tired of waiting for the 7500 Big Game :sleeps::sleeps::sleeps:

They are Nothing new , Abu made them for awhile long ago, Abu has brought them back..Anyway I have an orginal I baught way back, never liked it...I feel the syncro thing is useless, all it basically is, is a lever drag built into the handle and when I used it I found that accidently I would engage it without wanting to, star drag is much better, less parts to worry about and much more bullet proof.After using Abu for a long time, I can say for me anyway, Shimano blows the doors off Abu in any catagory you chose, The calcutta 400 is just about as close to the perfect Conventional reel you can own, Right out of the box they are ready to go, no drag washer changes, no bearing problems, nada... I use a 7000 and 9000 for livelining out of the boat , other than that the 400 gets used for everything else.

..In the surf I used the Shimano calcutta 400 for everything on a 9 foot rod, Large plugs, eels, and everything in between...I have caught every imaginable size of bass with that reel in every condition imaginable...The only place I would use a different reel was in Breachways when I was jigging, for that I would use the Abu 7000, You dont need anything larger..But again if that was my rod, I would put a 400 on it and worry about nothing! If you want to go convench than go with a calcutta 400 you will not be sorry.I have no problem trying other manufacture's products but I always come back to the 400, nothing else comes close or holds up as well.Those abu's seem smoothy out of the box sure, but get them wet a couple times and you will see, I spoke for awhile with Mike Bucko last week and he told me that abu still has not got it right as far as drag goes, nothing tops the dartainium drag the calcuttas have! The smoothies are no match either...To me more imprtant than anything else including casting distance(which is way overrated) is how well the drag holds up! Well thats my advice...good luck

Just to echo Bill. I also have used 2 Calcutta 400 for years. Both are on 9' rods and they have performed flawlessly. I wouldn't use any other reel in the surf. I do, however, use Abu 7000s for livelining on the boat but throw eels with the 400s. I also like the Abu 6500 C3 for throwing plugs on the boat. Never tried them in the surf.

I have one great reel, must be 20 yrs old by now, never a problem.

The "Syncro" must be the only big Abu that I've never owned, or even used. They came out over 20 years ago, for the first time. I never gave them a thought--like Bill, I thought it was just an extra part that I didn't want or need, waiting to break.

But I can echo the thumbs-up for the Calcutta. It's a tough reel under that "bling" exterior ;) It's just to slow for jigging the Canal.
