View Full Version : Fun with Numbskull and Saltfly
Flaptail 01-26-2008, 04:17 PM Today Numby and I met Saltfly at the Herring Cove beach parking lot in P-Town and walked from there to Long Point and back looking for plugs, beachglass and any other washed up stuff that might be of use or interesting.
Numny found a new 7 inch Yozuri Crystal minnow and a jig. I found a Mackeral Rebel and a Gag's International popper. Saltfly found a ton of high quality beach glass and we found a wreck coming out of the sand (actually two).
We also found a seal carcass freahly killed and devoured by some coyotes ( pic attached, I took it especially for KarlF who I know really appreciates fine photography of seals demise)

Holy sheet, that should be enough to elelvate them to VARMINT status and allow us to declare Open Season, 24-7. Sealskin boots and eeel bags can't be that far off can they .
Swimmer 01-27-2008, 02:44 PM Some more.
You guys should file a claim on the wreck. Could be part of the "Whidah" with untold millions buried underneath or nearby. Could be the next Barry Clifford.
Finatic 01-27-2008, 07:20 PM Looks like a kill by endangered piping plovers gone wild...........

:grins::grins::grins: took me 3 times to read that and get it Mike :D
yep, double standard, a photo of a ravaged seal remains killed in the wild by a predator not by a man. Peta can go chase the yote. Ya we joke about seals dying but it's not the same , and that thread was fine at first, but somewhere it got bumped and fell apart.
Let's go fishin

You'd be amazed at the stuff that appears and disappears during the Seasons. The HMS Somerset still resides at Peaked Hill. Paul Revere rowed past that ship before his "midnight ride". It was run aground by Truro boys shanghied in Boston during the War of 1812. "You're in the Royal Navy now boys", "The hell we are". The Brits were marched back to Boston at pitchfork point by the Truro hayshakers.
Last season I saw a ship's timber fitted with wooden pegs and bronze spikes. No steel was in it. I thought it was an odd combination of technologies, went back for it but it was gone.
The Vikings visited the outer Cape, I'm waiting for a new hat.
saltfly 02-01-2008, 08:43 AM Jake I've got a couple of shots of planks& ribs at H.H. with brass and pegs taken 2 years ago.Haven't seen it since.
Flaptail 02-01-2008, 09:28 AM I did some research this week on the bones we found just south of Wood End. January 9th, 1890, British Brig "Matilda Buck" wrecked and total loss at that very spot. Crew was saved by the wreckers who were on the scene faster than the U.S.L.S.S. who by the way had a station at Wood End!

Good stuff Fred!
You would look good in that helmet driving the Race :hihi:.
Backbeach Jake 02-01-2008, 05:54 PM When my Grandmother was in grade school , there were families living at Long Point. She told me that the parents would row their kids to school in Provincetown every day. Can you imagine? School's in the Fall, Winter and Spring , when the weather isn't exactly balmy . Tough bunch out there. Do the remains of the old railway ( to bring up boats) still exist. It did 20 years ago.

Just up inside from Long Point Lighthouse we found a series of pilings that went out into and eventually disapeared into the water on the inside harbor side looking towrds P-Town proper. Also we found another wreck which was obviously an iron hull as you could see the outline of a boat 40 or so feet in length which was sanded in. We also found machinery sticking out of the sand that now that you mention it could have been the machinery to haul boats up a rail system. Saltfly also pointed out the location of a third wreck which is marked by a buoy inside as well.
Backbeach Jake 02-01-2008, 09:16 PM A lot of that machinery was crap that the draggers drug up and dumped out there so they'd never run into it again. There was once a couple of huge radial airplane engines there. Other weird looking stuff too. Capt. Nemo looking gizmos. Those pilings running into the water are indeed the remains of the railway, long gone before you and I were born.
