Here are the rules for the challenge.

1. Entry fee is 1 Wooden Plug

2. Competition will be based on percentage of weight lost (Weight Lost / Weight at Start = Percentage Lost) not on actual pounds.

3. To get in just post in this thread "I'm In" by 12 midnight on January 2nd (Relax and enjoy New Years Day) and post your starting weight, A Pic is Optional......its just for reference. If anyone would like to take the "Lady Angler" option just Say "I'm In with the Lady Angler Option" when they enter, then they can just PM me their starting weight and their updates and I will just post your Percentages only at the update intervals.

4. On the 1st and 15th of every month post how much you've lost and we'll figure out what your percentage is.

5. The contest ends May 1st 2008....just in time to hit the Suds. Post your Final Weight and we will see who the Winners are.

Wow. I will give you some motivation. I am the same weight as I was when I graduated High school 32 years ago. I really feel for you as I love to eat and can't gain any weight even if I tried. If I had to go on a diet and eat limited calories it would kill me. Good luck to all of you. It must be very difficult. I am pulling for you. P.

If I was you guys I wouldn't let me in ... or am I starting the trash talk ? Hey ... Those scale pics are NG ... pretty much have to be the honor system ... You can turn that Knob on the back of the scale to read anything you want or hold a watermellon .

Should call this the S-B (Loose a) Leg Tourney

At the second heaviest (but not second tallest) of the bunch so far, I humbly add myself in at %#^&:af: ,err, 303 - within 10 pounds of my all time high (last year this time) and 16 over my best weight of the last year. Of course I could take a laxative and slip in lighter than Larry but alas, honesty and integrity and all that crap.

What finally made me do it you ask? Last year when I worked at the school district, the Middle School ran a "Biggest Looser" challenge among the staff and some people did real well. In fact, the winner is a S-B member here :bl:. I didn't do it expecting some knee work that never materialized. I managed to enter the second, smaller "Biggest Loser" Challenge and came in second, since having gained more than half of that back.

So I hang my fat ass in shame and join this merry rag-tag band of misfits and ne'er do wells :wall:

Any negative comments or Fat A$$ remarks will be met swiftly and deliberately...

1) Eat less carbs and stuff your face with veggies

Wow for one Spence and I are on the same page! It's quite simple if you think about it. I'm a solid 170 and hit the gym every other day, i enjoy lifting weights so it helps to find something i enjoy doing excercise wise, me and cardio dont get along, but i still force myself to do a good mile or so when i'm at the gym. 3 pounds is great, you don't want to lose to fast, it is said to only lose 2 to 3 pounds a week.

I have been in the gym and cut way down on food intake also only drinking water

it is easy to mistake thrust for hunger, drink 8-8 oz. glasses of water a day

Why only 2-3 lbs a week man ? Can you expand on this theory I haven't heard this before.I know my diet has changed drastically.Like night and day.I'm losing at a pretty fast rate.

Lots of times when you 1st start out weight drops quick....especially in Guys (pisses my wife off). After about the 3rd week it will start to slow down. The reason you don't want to lose it to quickly is so that you don't deprive your body of needed nutrients and calories.

Adam_777
01-08-2008, 07:36 PM
ahh the only thing I'm depriving my body of is alcohol and junk food.Nutrients and calories I'm sure I'm storing plenty of them still.

Yep my hubby ticks me off with that too. Unfortunately I know I probably dont stand a chance in this whole thing partly because of this. We ladies are so lucky having bodies designed to reserve everything they can for growing babies.

Heck with that!

i lost alot last year and am working on losing more now. here are some tips and how i did it. i struggled with weight loss for a long time and finally found a system that works for me. hope someone finds it helpfull (and yes, I'm bored at work right now)

don't eat less, eat different. eating less will only slow you're metabolism. even if you're at the gym everyday doing cardio. lots of protein, lots of fibre, as little carbs as you can handle. good fats (olive oil, avocado, almonds, etc) will really help to make you feel full, just don't eat too many. spreading you're food intake out over the whole day will help too, say into 5 or 6 small meals and snacks. and this is the hard one, avoid rewarding yourself with comfort food (i.e. "i've been good all week, i'm gonna have pizza and beer on saturday night during the game").

don't make the mistake of thinking that cardio is for losing weight, lifting is for getting bigger. lifting increases the amount of muscle you have and thus increases your metabolism. cardio burns calories while you're doing it (although not as much as lifting if your lifting "right") but lifting has more of an effect on your metabolism between workouts, which is much more important for weightloss. its all about metabolism.

don't think that longer is better in terms of cardio, faster is better. if you walk 3 miles or run three miles, you'll burn about the same amount of calories, but your metabolism and muscle gains will be much greater if you run. Ideally (and you may have to work up to this) a combination of running hard for a few minutes and jogging (active rest) will be the most effective. getting on a treadmill and jogging slowly for an hour will help you lose some weight, but not much - just look at some of the people who finish the boston marathon every year in the 4-6 hour range.

when lifting, don't follow the standard approach. lots of guys fall into the working one muscle group every day routine because that's what body builders do. that's fine for when you're in great shape and trying to perfect things, but not when you're trying to get in shape and lose weight. i'd recommend a full body workout every other day utilizing only multi-joint exercises and concentrating on big muscle groups. Don't waste your time on an excercise like bicept curls (which works a muscle that weighs maybe a pound) when you could be doing a horizontal pullup or lat. pull down (which works pounds of muscle, including you're bicepts). basically, don't do any excersise that you're only working one joint. focus of presses, pulls and squats. also, only rest 30-60 seconds between sets. supersets are good too.

don't ignore your legs when lifting. i think that a leg workout activates more muscle than anyother workout. but don't use the machines, they're too easy and do too much of the work for you. I read somewhere that madeline albright could do 400 lbs on the incline squat machine. goblet squats, lunges, dead lifts (only if you think your back can handle them), swiss ball leg curls, etc. are all good. avoid leg extensions, they'll destroy your knees.

hope it helps and good luck.

did a little research- at my starting weight of 267 lbs i could consume roughly 3000 calories a day and maintain my portly figure. with very little effort i should be able to squeak in under that. so with that said after not quite a week of replacing my lunch time roast beef sandwhich with fruit, soda with water, and trying my best to eliminate calories from fat, i hit the scale last night at 263. so far i've been good, hitting the treadmill in the garage for a few miles every night (1 mile run, 1 mile walk) and i'm back to hitting the heavy bag and speed bags. in general my energy is up and that can't be bad.
my fitness guru (wife) tells me it won't always be this easy but that's ok my goal is to be under 240 by the deadline. so that's 27 lbs in what, 3 months. 1/3lb loss a day. i think that's a reasonable goal.
anyway, a hearty "good job" to the guys putting in the effort i have to go crank up the radio i think i hear a pizza calling me.

Good stuff Josh, I have been doing the 5-6 small meals thing during the day. Bowl of cereal for b'fast, bag a peanuts 10 ish, can of soup or salad for lunch....and so on.

Can't hit the Gym though as time just doesn't allow for it.... I am hitting the bike every other night and in between, I wasn't kidding about my daughter being my Flexibilty trainer, She's been doing dance for going on 8 years and she is putting me through a mini version of her workouts....and enjoying it a little too much.

Larry if you washed it down with a diet coke its a wash.:claps:

I agree with Clogstons post. It was an excellant article. I lost 60 #'s on the Atkins a few years ago and put it back on. I started back with the cardio, (treadmill), used to do ten miles on the treadmill in the middle 90's. Ate a lot then too weighed 30 #'s less. I PM'd the boss on this weight loss contest in private , but I suppose its appropriate that I post publicly that I weighed in at 281#'s. A little embarassing but there I did it. Used to love lifting weighting weights, still do. Just added some dumbells to my iron collection down cellar. Love doing the machines at the Y. How long are we doing this this for? And good luck everyone. I friekin starved.

Just to give everybody an option before everybody starts Eating Tree Bark for breakfast.

Like Josh said you want High Fiber and High Protein......Frosted Mini Wheats have 6g of each, which is pretty good for both of those. To put it in perspective All-Bran cereal only has 4.5 grams of Fiber...and tastes like the floor near my lathe....and mini wheats taste good too. Just a helpful hint.

It'll take 100 bowls of mini-wheats to match the fiber in 1 bowl of colon blow. rip Phil Hartman, that was one funny skit.

I went to a nutritionist yesterday.

Whole Grain is key.. but still not alot of it

2 LARGE salads daily...
Eat as many RAW veggies as you want
7 servings of fruit daily...

WATER WATER WATER....

Red Meat is poison...
Chicken is only marginally better
Fish is Marginally better than that.
BUT.... still chicken/fish only 1-2 times a week

Im on a no meat diet for 6 weeks... she says the average person loses 20lbs on it.

(Yes I think she was a card carrying Vegan Hippy)

I have a degree in Food Science & Nutrition.

I think this is VERY POOR advice.

I'm sure you will lose weight, but it is not healthy advice.

The key is MODERATION>

There is no secret. Decrease calories. Eat an equal balance of protein, carbs & fat. Increase exercise. Period.

Very easy to type, very difficult to execute.

 if you're only going to eat meat once or twice a week, i hope she pushed that fact that you're going to have to be really careful to make sure that your getting enough protein from other sources (i.e. beans, flax seed, etc.). Research vegetarian diets. Its easy to go wrong and make yourself sick. I don't buy what she told you at all. Fatty or fried cuts of meat are bad, but I've never heard anyone say that white meat chicken and fish are bad for you. I'd limit red meat to once or twice a week, and avoid fatty cuts, but one or two serving of meat a week sounds like a recipe for muscle atrophy and short term weight loss only. she definately seams to be on the extreme side of things. that would be a really tough diet to maintain.

The Dad Fisherman
01-11-2008, 12:07 PM
You can't cut out everything....just eat human portions and you'll probably be fine. You need protein every day. So if she's telling you to not eat meat period you are going to have some problem because that is a big source of protein......looks like a lot of beans in your future.

Nothing wrong with Chicken or Fish I make sure i have something like this once a day.

Fatty Red Meats are definitely not the best for you but there is no reason you can't have a 95% lean burger (Normal Sized and only 1) for supper once in awhile.

The biggest problems with eating habits is we don't eat a proper sized portion of anything. We eat 1/2 lb. burgers (2 of them), a pound of pasta, a 44 oz. soda. Eat healthy and proper portions and you'll be fine.

zacs
01-11-2008, 12:18 PM
Boy, i can't stop thinking that she told you to only eat fish 1-2 per week at the MAX!

That is just plain CRAZY.

There is nothing more healthy in the world than fish. Studies have been done to show that cultures that have diets high in fish have lower cases of heart disease, cancer, alzheimers, etc...

Boy. that is just plain horrible. what a kook.

i said it before, but I will repeat

There is no secret. Decrease calories. Eat an equal balance of protein, carbs & fat. Increase exercise. Period.

Very easy to type (even eaiser to cut & paste), very difficult to execute.

I'm sure you will lose 20 lbs on this. Probably more! But at what cost?

This chick is in my primary care providers office and he referred me to her.

The plan she gave me is from a Dr. Fuhrman...
Pyramid
Top Level (Rarely Eat) - Beef Sweets Cheese/Milk Processed Foods/Hydrogenated Oil
Next Down - (Once Weekly) Poultry Eggs Oils
Next Down - (Twice Weekly) Fish, Fat Free Dairy
Next Down (5-20% of calories) - Whole Grains, Raw Nuts, Seeds
Next Down (20-50% of calories - Fruits / (10-30%) Beans/Legumes
Bottom level (30-70%) Vegetables 1/2 raw 1/2 cooked

Then I have another list of examples of what to eat more/less of. Also plenty of other documentation. She isnt just throwing me out there. We discussed it and how I should plan meals etc.

zacs
01-11-2008, 12:44 PM
OK, that is not bad.

It is a significant lifestyle change.

I was a fish/egg/dairy eating vegetarian for 12 years. I stopped about 3 years ago.

I will stop preaching now. But I will conclude by saying that making such a significant lifestyle change will be 1000 times more difficult to stick with than just regulating calories in a balanced diet. And the results will be the same.

I hope you like tofu!

Best of luck.

I was going to enter but it wouldn't be fair. I started Sept 4th at 239. Have been on the South Beach diet for 4 months and down to 202.

So 37 lbs in a little over 4 months. Right around 2 pounds a week lost.

Good for u paul..How is the SB diet different from Atkins which is kinda too hardcore no carbs for me..
I guess I do my own limited no carb thing.Complex carbs in regular portions. No sugars..No frutcose..Healty meats like chicken an fish..Sometimes a steak.

the only wall i have hit is my going away to florida for training for a week...

breakfast has been easy.. the hotel buffett has a very nice fruit selection.. but lunch, and dinner, not so easy... i want to get home and back to my wacky diet...

I had escargot for the first time last night, and some awesome pan seared grouper with pan roasted veggies..... The other night I had mexican fish, and for lunch tilapia tacos.

I think we are hitting a cajun place for lunch today and a japanese steakhouse for dinner tonight

yes, i travel every week. I was in San Diego last week, FL the week before, and Ohio this week. It is difficult, but I have been able to stay within my daily calorie limits. Continuing an exercise routine is difficult on the road, for me anyway.

I'm still on the same diet but I think I need to add more fiber.Whats a good source of fiber that's good for someone who's dieting.I think the diet made the whole digestive process slow down quite a bit.I've been finishing my meals with apple juice for the last few days.Seems to help some.

salad, celery, green beans, almonds or other nuts (not too many though), beans (not baked), etc.

you could also take a fiber suplement

also, if your trying to limit calories and loose weigh, juice is probably about the worst thing you could drink - calorie wise its usually equal to or worse than regular soda. 100% sugar, lots of calories and an instant increase in blood sugar levels.

Adam_777

Yeah the juice is loaded with calories thats why I was asking what else is good. Thanks for your reply.I've been eating salads, green beans and broccoli daily but still don't feel regular.I may look into a fiber supplement.

I also travel every week and it is more difficult on the road. Just stay away from the sweets and excessive feeding binges. Avoid breads and eat lots of veggies rather than potatoes.

I have been staying with the fish and chicken with broccoli cauliflower, string beans, carrots, zuccini. It has worked for me. i have a good breakfast but stay away from the carbs like bagels, toast (donuts, ugh!). Drink a ton of water as it will make you feel fuller and it flushes fat.

there are two different "IT guy" stereotypes, the pale skinny nerd guy... most probably socially inept or the hefty coffee drinking lug however more so keyed in on life and enjoying it. I fall somewhere in between

have changed my eating habits- no bread, no milk and verry little cheese. smaller portions and eating lots of fruit and veggies has been big for me. i have a fairly physical job and make myself work out every nite including at least 25 minutes on the treadmill and 3-3 minute rounds on the heavybag.
i'm still fat, no portly, but i can see my feet again and if i'm able to keep this up i'll be in the market for new waders this spring!

according to research done by my wife fishing will burn around 114 calories per half hour. don't know if that's surfcasting or working a stream or what. i would think a long distance walk to that special spot would increase that number.
