View Full Version : you just caught a 79 plus pound bass...
you caught the next world record.. you just weighted it in at a certified scale, you took some pictures of it... now what?
how do you make this fish work for you and not ruin you?
make as much money off it as possible then worry about the consequences later...
numbskull 02-02-2008, 02:35 PM Hang a surf hog from its mouth and collect bigtime from those guys.
spence 02-02-2008, 02:44 PM I'd probably call Tom Meade and tell him I caught it at one of #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&'s favorite spots :fishin:

Gunpowder 02-02-2008, 02:46 PM hahaha good one numbskull. i can honestly say i don't think i would want to catch the next record due to all the publicity that comes with it and the fact that you will very more than likely never be able to top that fish which would make many not go out nearly as much just knowing that. a fish of that size would easily end many fishermans careers because of the pressure to go out and top that fish. for me, i am happy coming home with a good size fish or no fish at all, but def. not a fish weighing 79 pounds. yes i kno, this sounds retarded... just knowing how much pressure would be on you to catch more fifty and bigger fish would be crushing because you would have to prove that this record was no "fluke" and that you deserved and put in many years to receive a chance at a fish of this magnitude... i just don't think i'd be ready for that.

Swimmer 02-02-2008, 03:03 PM Like I said in another reply post to a similar question. First I would notify my attorney after catching it, but even before then I would have my photographers/cameramen, best boy, gaffers, food concession workers, the drivers for the whole crew, and anyone else nearby sign affidavits to what they saw, insisting on the truth. Then I will weigh it in and duck. :rotflmao:
Then I might, no I will, buy all brown clothes so that all the chit everybody throws your way wont show. Might be able to smell it, but at least in a crowd no one will no for sure its you that smell so damn bad.
Of course during this time my attorney wil be signing me onto endrosement packages that would rival anything Peyton Manning or Lebron James receives. So in the end regardless of who says or does what to me I can just go:1poke:and have another :cheers2:with my brother.:rotflmao:
Slingah 02-02-2008, 03:16 PM I'd milk it for all it's worth...:humpty:
how do you make this fish work for you and not ruin you?
you dont.....well not in the long run anyway. If the public knows about it there will be sceptics just waiting to call you a liar and cheat.
BTW...what it the current obsession with huge fish and what you would do with them???? 99% will probably never have a 50 or more.
Slipknot 02-02-2008, 03:23 PM I think I would put it in a cooler out on the deck then go to work and let the raccoons and dogs eat it.:wall:

what a fluke that would be :hihi:

we're all fantasizing about next season... hey at least the talk is positive

don't laugh...that actually happened to me...the fish went 79lbs...I was so upset I havent spoken of it till now..:eek5:
hey at least the talk is positive
true ...you have a good point. But for some strange reason I have seen these topics go south in a hurry......
Mike P 02-02-2008, 04:07 PM I'd submit the paperwork for the record. If no one ever paid me a dime, so be it. Pressure to top it? Why would I feel pressure to go out and get an 80  If it lasted only one day as the record, I'd shake the next angler's hand.
As for what the peanut gallery would say or accuse me of--it wouldn't bother me in the least. They can all pound sand for all I'd care
With all due respect to Al McReynolds, a fish can only ruin your life if you let it ruin your life.

BassDawg 02-02-2008, 04:36 PM I love Vic's, TT's, answer from ova there<<<<<<<.
I hope he responds, my insides are busting right now, just thinking about it :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:.
TONS of pix, tons of documentation, attorneys, endorsements, and yes, yes, yes..........................MILK, milk it for every last stinking endrosement, free boat, rods, reels, gear, tackle, clothing, etc.......
Oh and drinks and cigars on me for a month at the Black Dog :gu:  :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:  :gu:.
As for the mental anguish that Gunpowder aspires to, doan think that stuff would bother me, because i would recognize the accomlphishment for what it was and know that behemoths like that only come around once in a Lifetime. As far as having to add more fiddies to validate it, that simply wouldn't apply in my world, the feat alone validates itself.
Which brings us to Swimmers hilarious chitstorms, though toungue in cheek, what he says is very true. I mean i've only been doing this for a little over two years, i absolutely LOVE it, i fish hard and learn fast, and if i even mention that i "hooked" some possible 50's or better with so few moons under me belt, i get hammered. Doesn't bother me, just stating a fact! I mean i've only been fishing for 42 years, i have landed trophies in other species, there is just a sheeet load of water up here and TONS of places for the big gurls to hide that adds to the difficulty and years of effort to be consistent at Landing Lahhhhge!
The bottom line is, aye could care less what any of them bums say! The truly accomplished guys that i've met just smile and wave and doan get into the petty bickering. i'm having fun, i'm living the striper dreams, workin' this beautiful Striper Coast!!!! i've only been doing this for less than 3 years and it taqkes my breath away ~what most of you guys have been born with, these picturesque and bountiful shores~ each and everytime i enter the suds. I could give two CHITS less for what anyone else would toss my way should i be so blessed to land that 80# monstah!!! Believe me, or doan believe me that's up to whatever heps you sleep at night, compadre! My friends, my loved ones, and my fellow stripermen would know the truth, and in the end that's all that matters to me, anywho........................

Sounds reasonable. I'd see about securing rights to the images and try to control who photos it. Make sure that my gear is prominate
in said photos. Rod reel lure swivel snap line boots gloves beer on and on for possible sponships. As you said, Mike, I'd shake the next guy's hand. And hand him a plug with the other.
GattaFish 02-02-2008, 04:56 PM clean my shorts 1st.:biglaugh:
Absolutely.... Then sit back and listen to the jealous gossip... and of course keep fishing for the same reasons I started in the first place,,,, It is fun,,,,
If someone beats it,,, Shake his hand and hear his story,,,, Hopefully we will all get our day,,,,
The true pioneers from the past have made it all possible,,,
Ake G 02-02-2008, 04:58 PM I'm OK w/a photo but I don't like the "BEHOLD! Here I am the great white hunter with my vanquished prey" thing...
spence 02-02-2008, 05:03 PM That might be a big enough fish to make some boots out of, though I don't know how long they'd last.

I think I'd rather win the lotto......Think about it,more people win the lottery than the world record bass and they seem to avoid all of the crap that comes with it.
I guess now a day's there are so many in's & out's to avoid public Bull crap of winning the lottery there must be a way for a world record bass histaria?
If & when some one cathes the new world record one would naturaly want some kind of recognition of the situation but not the pitfalls of it,like Al McRenolds,we all know what happened to him.....The poor mans life was turned up side down for catching a record fish.........Something he love'd to do and he got punished for it.
It's a good question/thread here, what would one do,the new record,my thought's,I guess is hire a lawyer and take it from there:rtfm:let them take the simple glorified fun out of catching a once in a life time fish.
Best of luck out there..................................

I agree with Mike on this wholeheartedly. Never before have these exacts words been said about the current record holder. Not in so many words anyways. Mr. McReynolds had to have been living that type of life that welcomed the continous negative reflection, before and after the fact, about his catching the big one.
It is nice to dream though and more than once did I have this dream. My fish weighs 88 #'s in my dream though.
I would write a book...:err:
GO GIANTS
Flaptail 02-02-2008, 07:13 PM get a lawyer.

You'd never have to buy a rod or reel again.
:pats2:
bloocrab 02-02-2008, 11:15 PM :eek5:...with some of the places I fish, I don't think I could carry it back to the truck, I'd have to drag it,,,and by the time it reached the truck it would already be a 1/2 mount that barely weighed 30#s. :conf:

DITTO, definitely shake the hand of the next Champ!
And hand him some fresh wood, a cold beer, and a Cohiba!!
How many of us believe that there truly is an 80+#'er out there?
Are there 100 #'ers out there as some legends have suggested?
Sure would be nice to find out some Striper dawn.......................
She'd, no doubt, either make ya or break ya!
piemma 02-03-2008, 06:51 AM I have often thought about this topic.
I would get the weight certified, lots of pictures and a good sports agent and lawyer. I am convinced that the next world record is a
$5M fish.
Endorsements for every piece of gear you used to catch the fish and I don't mean free stuff. I'm talking money. Rod, reel, line, waders, swivels, clip, down to what underware you were wearing. If it were a boat fish you are talking boat, motor, GPS, fishfinder, compass, rod holders, rocket launchers, fuel/water separators every friggin' thing on the boat. A good sports agent would know how to leverage this feat.
Then there would be the sport show tour. Articles written either by you or thru a ghost writter. The list goes on....
Surfpirate 02-03-2008, 08:16 AM what would I do if I caught a 79+ striper...
the same thing as last time, keep her in the water, remove the hook, pat her on the head, walk her around until she wants to break free and give her a push toward deeper water.
fame? fortune? a Jedi seeks these not!

Blitzseeker 02-04-2008, 11:11 AM I'll know soon enough because it is bound to happen for me. I've broken off a bunch of fish the last couple years that felt like they were world's records for sure, and a couple I saw in the waves with my eidetic memory were over 100 lbs for sure. :rotf2:
Kidding aside, I'd do what any sane human being would do...try to make a buck off it and laugh all the way to the bank while people bashed me for being lucky....because of course they'd be right. There would never be anything more indicitive of "it is better to be lucky than good" than if I caught the world record.

Agreed
RIROCKHOUND 02-04-2008, 12:46 PM I suppose I'd have to kill my fishing partner on the spot so he couldn't tell how/where I caught it. :D (sorry Joe, Paul, Eben or John) Make sure I remove all evidence of the eel and eel hook from it's mouth
Drive to the other end of RI and pretend to recatch it on my most expensive namebrand, rod and reel, line and plug AFTER donning every single piece of name brand gear I could find. Then, I'd weigh it at a certified scale, while still wearing said gear (for the photos of course).
after that, a lucrative career opening supermarkets, attending state fairs and being the grand marshal for parades... maybe while wearing a cape with a big striper woven on it. And a scepter shaped like a surf rod. With a crown of needlefish...
:D:D:D

PaulS 02-04-2008, 02:18 PM Gotta agree about Al - it ain't ruining my life.
I think it worth less than a lot of us think it is. It ain't a LMB!
I think it worth less than a lot of us think it is. It ain't a LMB!
I totally agree with that statement. A 25 pound largemouth could be worth millions but a 80 striper....I doubt. Just doesnt have the same exposure.....

awesome thought process . you might need it with all the knuckleheads out there today . maybe that was u.p.s thought too but then why the funny shorts ?
I have never thought about what I would do , but an attorney and an agent might be in order . or maybe I wouldnt tell anyone and then no one will want to follow me and ask me where oh where did that striper come from oh where oh where might she live .
ruhroh 02-05-2008, 12:44 PM my luck, i'd get it on wire!
