If you were heading into a big bass zone tonight and where carrying only arties, what lures would you carry (throw)? Be specific on who's lure, color, and why you think bass prefer that lure over others.

Lot of undefined variables. ie: time of year? moon phase? Where?etc.

Okay - I'll fill in some blanks and give two responses.

1 - SS inlet, Oct, 3 days past full moon. 9" pearl Tsunami (bass on bunker); White Bucktail w red UJ 70s (go to in inlets); 2oz black RonZ (eel imitation always seems to work)

2 - M in August new moon. SS Darter in yellow. (Bass on snappers); SS Needle in green; Bob Hahn med surfster.

Not knowing the conditions... An old red fin, maybe or maybe not weighted; assuming water is flowing and deep enough... a bucktail/plastic combo (probably a 9" sluggoon back); blind beachmaster danny.

If I am in a different state (than CT), I would likely change the danny for a needle.

One 4 oz black bucktail jig, with or without a trailer (I saw a crescent moon in the late evening sky last night which means we're off the moon tides).

One red/black 9" Sluggo superglued to a 4 oz jig head.

One 9" Storm or Tsunami shad--preferably one poured over a single hook head.

If you were heading into a big bass zone tonight and where carrying only arties, what lures would you carry (throw)? Be specific on who's lure, color, and why you think bass prefer that lure over others.

DJ based solely on this question and no facts given above in your question (structure, wind, etc.) I would go with the following:

- 2.5 oz Pt. Jude Butterfish in Gold - This is a tin that I can work the upper level of the watercolum at a very slow speed and can get great casting distance covering a lot of water. I prefer the gold for that extra bling bling factor if the water is cloudy. Extremely versatile lure and my go to tin at almost all times. (Joe thank you for making a great product:claps:)

- Afterhours 2.5 oz Needlefish 8 inches Green over white or gold Belly - This is a very versatile needle because it has a very slow sink rate that will allow me to work all parts of the water column. I prefer the green top, because if i wanted to work it on the extreme bottom of the water column the green resembles many of the baitfish the bass will be targeting (i.e, sand eels) and in the middle water column the green can represent a very large spearing. Additionally, this lure has a great swimming action and is extremely versatile as I can pencil pop with it and puff it along the bottom at 2 or 3 minute intervals if needed. Extermely versatile lure, that casts extremely well. (Don thank you for making a great product:claps:)

- 2.0 oz Smiling Bill Jetty Caster (All white) - This is a bucktail that you can pretty much work the depths of the water column with and can trim the trailer to presesnt different baits. Larger pork rind to resemble bigger bait, thinner porkrind to resemble. white as it can resemble a lot of different bait and if you need to attract on color i find the pork rind to be much better. You can also turn this lure into a great eel immitator by adding a sluggo or a hogy or another trailer. everyone knows the versatility of this lure. The larger hook and the strength of the hook is what sets me apart.

DJ this was a very difficult question. I know that there were items i left off like a darter and danny plug, bottle plug and a Big Water Pikie. If i have success with the dartcaster and it acts as a danny and a darter, that may have to go on the list. But if you asked me to meet you anywhere with a chance at big bass at anytime, without any knowledge of the structure we would be fishing or the surrounding conditions these would be my choices.

FYI if you need someone to fish with you for those large give me a call anytime buddy:call: and I will show you what these 3 lures can do.

Great question, thank god our surfbags hold many plugs!!!

Billy

FYI - I was stuck in Chicago at the airport and could not make the meeting, my apologies buddy

OK it was a broad question...my bad. Mid-October, boulder field, wind in the face at less than 15, medium surf. 4 days either side of the new. No eels. Again in order of confidence level. (e.g. 1=first choice; 2=2nd choice, and la-dee-da)

NIB keep it up and I will send Rice after you :hihi: :eyes:

Did you tell that story yet?

Given you're conditions, assuming the boulder field is what I think of a typical (medium depth, little to no current):

1 - 9" black sluggo, rigged and weighted
2 - Hab's 2oz blurple needle (replace with LIFishVT blurple 2 oz needle if water is very shallow)
3 - Afterhours blurple needle

If the water is deep and there is a decent cross current / rip:

1 - Hab's 3oz blurple needle
2 - Bigwater Diving Giant Pike in Black over Gold
3 - 9" Surfhog or 13" reel eel on a 1.5 oz Pt. Jude Wobble head

Saltheart
02-15-2008, 09:29 AM
1) Rigged eel (if reel rigged eel not allowed then rigged rubber one)
2) Needlefish (stubby i guess)
3) Big danny swimmer
4) White mullet looking Fin S fish 7 inch on a 1 1/2 OZ ball jig
5) Atom popper (must sink slowly so no wooden ones) ) as casting weight for large black and white teaser.

If none of them work there are still ten more things to throw at them!! :)

1- 9" black, phatybat rigged Sluggo
2- either ~9" pnut bunker, Storm shad; bunker, BM Cowboy swam deep
3- 3oz-4oz smilin's or andrus burg/burg or burg/blk with 12"-14" pork trailer
4- same large needles mentioned before
5- 3 1/2oz red head/white body, Rockcaster made to dig deep
6- either ~3oz yellow/white, Gibbs bottle; large yellow/yellow Tatoo's darter made to dive

And if that doan bring sum Big BEETCH up, i'm slingin' the biggest snake i have in the bag that's been screamin' to be scraped and swam into the Clown's mouth, bro! Thanks for the question DJ, but for me, the artificials would be last and fresh bait would be first at "my producer" under those sweet conditions  .

In no particular order...

confidence is high... lures have produced in the past...

3 types

Polaris over Pencils... those that know me know i am a pencil fanatic... but during that time the bait is spazzing as the bass are feeding like mad... For me I feel that the polaris type with the cupped mouth produces more noise that attracts predators to investigate.. and being out of sight in a boulder field noise and vibrations can make the difference between catching and skunking...

The Beat Yellow one is one of Tony Spina's creations the plastic is a SS 2-3/8oz

That needle Hab's 9" 3.5oz for some reason at night fished high produces... dunno what it is...

plastic.. I have a hard time fishing those in the boulder fields as they are a PIA to replace...
bone-redfin, blue back bone rebel F-80, chrome blue redfin g-finish, and rebel F-90 gold mackerel.

My first choice for an artie has to be the 9" Slug provided, 1) good conditions, 2) NO F'n blues in the neighborhood. :hee:

But if the new 12" is 3 oz. as stated...that increases it's capabilities in wind...:rocketem:
