View Full Version : Rigged Sluggos
PaulS 02-15-2008, 01:23 PM I just went to the Hartford hunting and fishing show.
Saw the 9" and 12" rigged sluggos - a B&T had them for $17.45 and $23.95. Talked to the owner who said he only brought (and bought) a few b/c of the price. Saw the 9" for $16.00 somewhere else. Still about $6 too high. I'll continue to rig them myself.
JFigliuolo 02-15-2008, 01:33 PM How many in a pack? 3? Damn expensive when blues are around...:wall:

3:biglaugh: - try 2 to a pack.
WadingWill 02-15-2008, 01:55 PM I'd rather rig them myself anyways. Not only is it alot cheaper, It gives me something to do in the winter.

That is insane...
RIROCKHOUND 02-15-2008, 02:07 PM Still about 10+ dollars too high!
give me 18.00 worth of eels... I'll catch more fish than I would on 2 pieces of plastic...

...ain't that the truth:fishin:
spinncognito 02-15-2008, 02:52 PM sounds like a rigged the price...
fishonnelsons 02-15-2008, 03:04 PM You guys are right, they are very pricey. Sluggo isn't making them for you though - the people that know how to rig them right, and who will take the time to rig them exactly the way you want them rigged.
They are making them for the 75% of the population who don't know how to rig them, don't want to know how, and don't want to be bothered. These folks, how do I say this without offending anyone(?), are not fishing finatics, but fish on vacation, a day here and a day there. They read the magazines and are intrigued by some of the techniques - large rigged sluggo's - but aren't "into it" that much to really work on it and learn how to do it. The easy way out is to buy a rigged one, hence sluggo is making them. (Case in point - all the Berkley, Tsunami, Calcutta, Storm, etc rubber with the hooks in them).
That being said, the cost for them is high, so the retail is high - I bought some for the shop, but not alot, I think they should've rigged up some of the smaller sluggo's first - less expensive.
plankton 02-15-2008, 03:05 PM Does anyone know if they're gonna sell the 12" unrigged? I won't pay the price for the rigged ones, but I wouldn't mind having a few of the 12 inchers to rig up myself.
Saltheart 02-15-2008, 03:16 PM $17.45 and $23.95!!! :eek5:

The single best thing you have ever said! there is wisdom in those words Bryan! you are wise beyond your years!
Anyone who pays that needs to be checked into a mental ward...

I thought I saw them but still was in sticker shock so I didn't pay attention. I also figured that I would support my B&T.
Clogston29 02-15-2008, 03:43 PM I see Lunker City getting a lot of complaints on these from guys who haven’t fished enough to realize that they’ll probably only get one fish, maybe two, per rigged sluggo. Hell, I think the unrigged ones are overpriced (although a lot of that is probably due to the packaging, just give me ten packs in a plastic bag and pass along the savings).
PaulS 02-15-2008, 03:57 PM ^ that reminds me that I did see larger amounts in the 9" size. Looked to be about 10 in a bag.

Lunker City says they will be selling the 12's unrigged...
BillM 02-15-2008, 05:41 PM I love Sluggoes. The first time I used them I landed a bass on my very first cast. I have rigged maybe 40 of them in the last two years but MAN!!! I lose 3 of them to chompers for every fish I pull in.

8 per bag, MSRP of $12.49. I also read about these weighted hooks they were coming out with, thought they'd be great for rigging up 9" Sluggos, except they're $3.59 - $4.49 per two-pack depending on the size you want, too much, especially when I can get some Mustad O'Shaughneseys ,wrap them with dacron, and stick a few galvanized nails in the plastic for about half the cost of their special hooks.
BillM 02-15-2008, 06:31 PM 12" sluggoes would be awsome if they have the same action as the 9".
titan 02-15-2008, 07:00 PM I bought a pack of 3 unrigged 12" sluggos for 12.97 today. They come in a neat new color, called eel skin. It looks like a dark brown to me.
DJ Muller 02-15-2008, 07:29 PM So are the 12" unrigged Slug-Go's now available every where? Or is it just a show thing?
titan 02-15-2008, 07:37 PM DJ, I bought mine at Rivers End Tackle in CT from Pat. He's well stocked with them. He said they each weigh in at over 3 ounces.

Oh boy...gonna have to stop and see Pat...
Thanks for the heads.

Maybe its just me, but $4+ for a single soft plastic bait is way too much. I wonder why the 12" are so expensive, I mean, you can get a 3 pack of 9" Sluggos for less than $5 and the 12" are going for $13 for three?

So are you saying that because I use a prerigged shad body that I'm not "into it?" That's :bs: I use these and sluggos that I rigged and consider myself "into it!"
I'd rather rig them myself anyways. Not only is it alot cheaper, It gives me something to do in the winter.
I agree
I thought slug-gos fish best on medium action 7-8 foot rods?
fishonnelsons 02-16-2008, 07:48 AM Skiharder - as I said - "how do I say this??" - the comment was aimed at the majority of people fishing, you can't cover everyone and there's always exceptions.
Sure, hard core "into-it" folks will buy them, but look at all the comments on the thread. I would guess that less than 2 of 10 say they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and will rig their own or use live eels. That's not to say they won't work or you are not "into it" if you use them.

I may go down to a 9' rod possibly a 8'6" a lot of depends on where you are fishing. Open areas would be no problem but get in the 'b-fields' or jetty country and you'd definitely need more muscle.
I like the idea of a small rod for control, anyone have suggestions of a good rod in the 8-9 foot range?

I've got a 9' Tica Dolphin spinner rated 1/2 - 3 that I love, great for 9" sluggos and a whole lot more, best light tackle surf rod I have used by far!

i use a 9ft rod and get great action. it can get tiring working the slug, especially with a 704 as your reel, but its usually worth the effort. Loomis 1084, allstar 1088, and that factory breakaway you sold me a couple yrs ago(that was my favorite slug-go stick) all work well. i like to hold the rod just above the reel seat and rest the butt against my forearm. this shortens up the length of the rod and gives you good leverage on the hook-set.
where i fish, the slug-go is really the only artificial that I am confident would entice a slob if i didn't have eels.
Slammer223 02-17-2008, 11:31 AM Cheferson was rigging them and selling in the Classifieds here at a very fair price.
cow tamer 02-17-2008, 02:13 PM After a bluefish chops through the three pack of 12", you can take whats left and with some glue make a 9".
PaulS 02-18-2008, 08:03 AM That seems much more reasonable - hope you do well.
mikecc 02-18-2008, 01:26 PM I will have them availsble at our sale at the prices quoted.
seems this stirred up a few people I was asked to pull the link and up the price from more than one source.
Not me. The whole rigged Sluggo craze is sooo 2004....
LeCounts1099 02-18-2008, 04:00 PM Just another expensive fad I guessed I missed! Oh, well!
When they come out with bulk- bags of unrigged 12" Sluggos at a near- reasonable price... & keep their stinkin' funny- butt bent- shank hooks & packaging to themselves!...
Maybe then I'll start seriously experimenting with & rigging them... & throwing them!... in place of my pet (Bluefish- proof) Woods! :uhuh: (& S.S. plastic! :smokin: )
bassballer 02-19-2008, 03:05 PM Thats it! Im going to start fishing bait:tooth:
