Guitarist extraordinaire. Best IMO. No style he couldn't handle. Shame he ended his own life way too short.:hs:

Larry he is the worlds best unknown player IMO. He played the DC club circuit mostly. You should hear his jazz stuff. Completely different than his country and blues stuff. His jazz band was called the Redneck Jazz Explosion.http://bigmo.com/rejaexvoi.html. I have most of his stuff. Hard to find.
Strange in that he and Roy Buchanan had a very similar sound, although DG was way more versatile, and they both had trouble lives and both committed suicide. What a shame.

Here is another incredible guy for you Larry. Being that you are a big Clapton fan. He has been his rhythm guitarist on several concert tours. He is also British and playing country style. Looks like a Barry Manilow clone. Super clean player. Also has Danny Gatton and Vince Gill in the second clip.

Saw Gatton and NRBQ play at Hunter College in NYC. He was incredible player with chops to spare. The album with Robert Gordon, the Humbler is awesome. It was a shame he could never find a niche. I have always felt it was weird that Gatton and Roy Buchanan were both products of the DC club scene, played a tele, and were tipped for greatness. Neither ever had a great band or material to put them over to a wide audience. Both took their own life.

ProfessorM

would have loved to see him live. Most of the great ones don't seem to ever appeal to the masses, but I like that just fine.

Scotty Anderson is another guy in that tele school that is worth checking out. He also suffers from the I play so hot my material can be crap syndrome but he is a good player. Right after I graduated from college (1979) my friend and I went down to Nashville to hang out for a bit. It was amazing how many good players were all over the place. Same thing a few years later in Austin. Every bar had a guy that would make your jaw drop. Never saw that too much when I lived in NYC except on the jazz scene when Mike Stern used to play at 55 bar.

Mike Stern is very good too. Boston area guy. Got a great album with him on a few songs. The Jaco Pastorius Big Band called the Word is out. If you like non commercial music you will luv this.

Let me know what you think. They have 2 more out also. Cream of the crop musicians and guests. Another one, Jaco, who mastered the instrument but had mental illness problems and was killed from a beating he received while down on his luck. I never realized he was such an accomplished writer.

Find Bill Kirchen. Listen to him pull magic from a Tele. He was good way back when with Commander Cody, but is so good now that it will make you smile like a little kid on the last day of school.:bl:

That was pretty hot! Arlen Roth is no slouch either. It looks like it was Gatton's band backing him. At least the keys/sax guy I remember seeing with Gatton.

RIJIMMY
02-29-2008, 02:18 PM
yup- that is gattons band backing him.
He is a pretty interesting kid, I beleive he is legally blind and comes from Maine. He was originally signed by Steve Vai's label. His latest music is in the southern rock vein and not as cool as the gatton-ish stuff but I guess he has to find his own voice.

The most amazing Gatton playing to me ios on teh jazz record with Joey Defrancesco, they do "well you needn't" by Thelonious Monk at a break neck speed. That is a tough tune at a medium tempo, but Danny pull off a beautiful solo.

ProfessorM

Defrancesco's organ playing is spectacular. I like anything DG did with the red neck jazz explosion. So many great low profile players in the world, so little time

Welcome aboard. I luvem both. I lived in Franklin from 64 to 83.
One more fantastic player can't forget this guy. Can't get enough of his multi layer music and fantastic band. The stuff going on in the first clip is some pretty top notch progressive stuff. Second clip is one of my favorite tunes he does with his band but I have never heard it on solo acoustic guitar before, incredible rendition.

I'll go with DD

Professor, did I meet you at the Fairhaven VFW last night? I recall my brother talking with a long time Franklin resident last night. With all the guys you've posted up there, I wonder if you're not a Ry Cooder fan, too.

DD's a good pick.

EVH is still my all time favorite. Plenty of others though, too.

ProfessorM

When I say greatest i am only joking as there really isn't any such thing as greatest IMO.. So many styles to choose only one. They are all great and depends on what you like. I like posts like this because you never know who you may find out about. I am going to try and keep this going. Got to think about some more entries.

Yes I talked to your brother last nite. Small world. I do like Ry Cooder. I particularly like the Buena Vista Social Club album he did with all the great Cuban musicians. Great album

Had the pleasure see this guy several times up close when he was in the Dixie Dregs in the late 70's early 80's. Steve is classically trained. I think he is still playing for Deep Purple now. Very versatile. Has some of the biggest hands I have ever seen. I think I judge being the best by being able to play many different styles and all at an above average standard. Some guys are very good at one style but I prefer players that can tackle anything. It shows in their original work. Not a lot to choose from on You tube. Here are a few

Thanks for the clips. Here is a link to a Derek Trucks solo from a recent ABB show (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Vuadh1o0yC8, apologies as I do not know how to post the actual clip). It is amazing how much potential Trucks has at only age 26. He seems to be on everyone's list as a go to player. It only makes you wonder where Duane would have got to if he had not left so early ( age 24). I like both Trucks and Warren Hayes very much and I think in some ways the current version of the ABB can stand toe to toe with the original. I have timed my spring trip home to fish with the ABB's run at the Beacon so I will get to see them live.

Prof: The interesting thing about Morse is that he picks every note! No hammer ons or pull offs.

Hate to throw off the vibe in here but without simple timing from beats and rythm it's hard to make music.I played drums for 12yrs and still crank it up and rip the knob off with this song playing.People stop and stare and say WTF is that.Who asked them?

I saw the Dixie Dregs probably 6 or 7 times, then the Dregs a few. I have seen Steve Morse up close in a small club setting a few times and he is so unbelievably good. One of the best. His technique is flawless. His fingers are so long it is unfair. His technique stems from going to school and studying classical guitar, music. I like guitarists that have that natural born to play guitar. You know the ones that can't read music but just seem to be able to play as soon as they pick the thing up. But I will take a schooled musician over one of those types any day. Just so much more to draw on when you can read and compose in the language and you can hear it in their music. BTW did you get a chance to listen to the JP Big Band "The Word is Out!" I'd send you a copy but you are better off getting the cd as the info inside about all the players on each cut is worth the price. Paul
