Hi,
I live in Boston. Any idea if there are smelts running around near any of the piers in the area?

Thanks.

Hmmmm, not by any means a smelt expert, in fact I've never fished for them, but do enjoy them when I get them from guys that do it. Have heard of the tactics, and it seems the water is still WAY too warm.....

Isn't that usually a Dec/Jan/Feb thing?

Yeah, it's usually a winter thing and smelt run better when there is ice but I heard a couple of guys got half a bucket full (~60) at Marina Bay. If the rain dies down a bit this weekend, I may give it a try. They are tasty little critters.

Head down to the rotary by the fore-river bridge in quincy and see Rick at Fore River bait and tackle, if the Fisherman is true its word, this guy is the local expert on smelt.

Funny, I just stopped by the local fish market to pick up some mussles and clams for dinner, and they had smelt, they looked nice and fresh, $2.49 a lbs, I think.....so maybe there are around already.......

fished earlier in the week tues.6 guys smelting at ply. harbor behind woods fish market. some smelt but lot's of herring under the dock. thinking cast net for bait and chum fish warden said 10' by 10' is okay for bait. smelt is okay but stripers are the best now in the harbor.!!!

fly rod with light line tippet and shrimp they were getting behind M&D's. light weight on chain and #6 or 7 hook seems to be the way.

went to fore river bait and tackle today because i was interested in smelting bought some grass shrimp and worms going to try at a friends yaght club today where i heard they like to congregate. fore river b&t gives really good advice, and they have the coolest cod jigs in there too.
