View Full Version : Back from MV AAAAAHHHHH!!!!
Fisherwoman 10-11-2002, 09:34 AM Hello all, sounds like things have been pretty busy here while we were gone and people are getting into alot of nice fish. Sounds good to me, going to go get me some big bassies down south this weekend I hope.
MV was awesome as usuall. Caught alot of albies this year and some really nice size ones in the mix, last years average size albies that were caught were mostly around 22-23 inches, this year most fish were 24 inches and up. The are the balls!!!!!
We caught alot of small blues this year in minnie blitzes on the beach at Wasque, it was totally cool and we got some great video, it was just too bad that the bad dogs of the neighborhood from the Minot's light area hadn't gotten there to visit us before we left.
Caught a tremendous amount of squid, with some of those bad boys takin drag baby!!! If you have never gone squidding you must try it at least one, LMAO it is very theraputic!!
I did manage to squeek out a women's weekly Ablie this year, but the leader board is going to be tought to beat, some really nice fish up there this year, congrads to all of them.
We had alot of laughs and great times as usual this year, but the trip was not the same with the absence of Joe Ciampa who is fighting a ruptured dics in his back and couldn't join us. He has been going with Baitcaster on this trip for 23 years, He was sadly missed and is doing better so I am sure he will be with us next year. I will add up the count of fishies and post them later.
Glad to see you guys and girls are gettin into the fall run!!! YEEE HAAA!!!!
JohnR 10-11-2002, 09:48 AM Yo baby - glad you all had a good time! I was thinking how much I would miss it again this year when I was standing on the shores of Cuttyhunk - but Oh Well, there's next year...
Mr. Sandman 10-11-2002, 12:55 PM There is still another week John! ;)
Fished squib last night...wind in face, rough surf , only had a couple of bumbs with the eel...couldn't get it in productive water with the wind. Switched to large needle (Iron-Mike flavor). Picked up 12 mediums and dropped at least half that many (12-2:30), no giants but a few stressed the gear a bit. The big bass are coming from wet suiters swimming to the sweet rocks. Don't have the balls for that at my age at that place in those conditions.
Fisherwomen, what was your best set-up and location for albies? Fly rod? or Spinning?
Some guy caught a 10lb bonito off the edgartown dock this morning. Jesssh.
Got Stripers 10-11-2002, 03:13 PM I wanted to get down, but my list of meetings seems to be getting longer and not shorter:(, next year for sure. If your getting out on the boat at all let me know what your find, I've not been out in weeks, can't seem to find the time any more.
BasicPatrick 10-11-2002, 07:08 PM Julie,
Wasn't I missed this year???? I did get down on Wed of this week, Mike, Mike, Beetle and I did ok with 7 Bass over 15lbs. Two went to weigh in and Mike, aka got a 27" albie out of one of my Bonito spots the same day. Beetle got a mystery the same day and Mantia got 2nd daily shore blue yesterday. I might go for two days next week, until then it's fish Boston, not bad right now.
Clammer 10-11-2002, 07:16 PM Welcome back you two

Fisherwoman 10-12-2002, 09:18 AM Yes Patrick, you were sorely missed also, sorry buddy!!!!, glad you got over the other day.
JohnR & GS, too bad you couldn't make it over, how was Cuttyhunk?
GS, got out on the boat on Thurday, had bass & Blues at Wollaston Bay and near the LI Bridge with some decent bass to 36 inches in the mix, also had some over by Castle Island in the AM. Was a tough day with the wind. Hopefully next week will be some more fishies coming thru. Still found quite a bit of bait around so Its not over yet. Going to start looking for cod also next week.
Jenn, HOW YOU DOIN!!!!! **** bag, how was your trip to the cape a couple of weeks ago, here the hubby is getting a slight addiction problem all of a sudden. Got some good video, you and the hubby will have to come down, if not for the striped ones maybe for some cod????
Hey Clammer, how are you feeling buddy???
Mr Sandman, Most of the time we were over there, we fished Wasque Beach. One of the reasons for this was it was the only place on the Island that wasn't so loaded with bait that you couldn't get the fish off of it. We caught an average of about 6-10 fish a day there between the group of us and all were quality albies mostly just short if not over 25 inches, but you needed one alot bigger than that this year to catch the top guys on the board.
We did all spin fishing, We caught most of the albies on a 1 1/8 oz Sting Silver, deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& #1 green and Baitcaster caught over 12 albies on the teaser fly I tied to match the hatch out there.
It was a strange year this year with the Albies as they didn't show alot like they normally do, so it was mostly blind casting as they were there everyday. We also caught a few at Cape Poque gut, and the Chappy side of Edgartown the last couple days we were there. Best tide no matter were you fish was incoming!!!!
Mr. Sandman 10-12-2002, 10:15 AM Ms. Fisherwomen,
Thanks for the tips. I mainly concentrate on bass at night but I have made a few trips in the AM to seek out a bonito or albies. I have had mixed luck. I have been spending most of my time along the tashmoo to west chop. The bait has been so thick that I think it is hard for your lure to get noticed. You do spend a lot of time removing snagged bait from the hook.
I fish wasque at night a couple times a week. I think I will head over early am and see if I can get one.
One day I had bonito shooting around and thru my legs like bullets and I could not catch one. It was frustrating. No one else caught one either but I had numerous good shots at them and could not get them with different lures. Anyway thanks for the tips and glad you had a successful trip.
Do you guys stay on chappy when you visit?
PS the weather is just wonderful today....bright sunshine and 75 deg with no wind. ;) (actually blowin 30+ ENE and raining like stink)
Fisherwoman 10-12-2002, 10:55 AM Mr Sandman, yes this weather is fun isn't it!!!
That is why we fished at Wasque as the fish can't seem to trap the bait up like the can at the jetties. If you do fish Tashmoo or any other place with all the bait try, throwing pink as it will stick out better in between all the bait and may bring you a little better luck to hook up, reel it slower and you won't snag on the bait that is there.
We stay about 3 miles out side of Edgartown on the main side of the Island, been going for many years and have a ball, we took our boat over and didn't even get it out once in the whole 3 weeks we were there as the shore fishing was just too good to pass up.
If you go to fish Wasque in the morning try fishing around the piont before the rip as that was the most productive for us, also the bowl just before the point at the rip. Aslo the jetties at East beach were very productive and may even be a few bones mixed in there. Good luck, hope you get into them.
We are heading for the cape for the rest of the weekend and try a little shore fishing for some big cow's, time will tell how it will be with all this lousy weather we have had, but you can;t catch them if your line isn't in the water.!!!!
Mike P 10-12-2002, 12:16 PM First year since 1984 I'm missing my MV trip :(
Some great people too, that I won't get to meet there. Normally, I'd be in the stand-by line at this very hour.
Hope squidmama or Roland hit the leader board before next weekend.
WELCOME BACK !!!!!:D
See you soon...
Fisherwoman 10-13-2002, 10:17 AM Van, you got that right, waiting for this crappy weather and wind to break so we can get back out on the boat.
Got a couple of pictures for you. The ones I took that day you and Flatts1 were out beating up the fishies, it is of you and Mike, got you both a set, I will bring them to the next meeting if that is OK.
here the hubby is getting a slight addiction problem all of a sudden.
slight addiction???? yes for a bit it was crazy......but now duck hunting time is here and then deer turkey or whatever else comes along.....so he has changed "modes" and hasnt peeped a word of fishing! Sooo........
Got some good video, you and the hubby will have to come down, if not for the striped ones maybe for some cod????
