You have started several threads recently asking some basic questions. Here are some questions for you:

Are you finding the responses/answers helpful?

Have you learned anything from the responses/answers?

Do you feel better prepared to catch fish this season because you asked the questions?

One more:

Did you think by seeking answers here that you would have less to "learn" on the water?

Just curious...

wow lets just completely bash a new member, for asking a few questions. seems to be a bit of this going on lately. something people need to consider before the engage in this kind of basing is that. Forums like this rely on sponsor dollars to keep the server running. Why would someone want to sponsor a site where new members are being run off?

spin my post was not directed at you, but the trend tword which alot of questions from new members have been answered. isn't that the whole point of a discussion board; to learn new things and share your knowledge with others?

Here's a great idea--let's have a website where any new member gets a load of cow%$%$%$%$ dumped on their heads for having the nerve to ask questions the greybeards think are stupid. Let's dump a barrel of crap on their heads every time they do it, and discourage other newbies from joining. That way we'll have this clubby place like an old time tackle shop, where a few select regulars sit around a potbellied stove, drink coffee, and joke with the owner in the off-season, and where every tourist who walks in gets a smart-assed answer when they're not being totally ignored.

Sounds like a great way to attract new blood and keep a site from turning stale, and eventually dying off.

Any of you old-timers been back to the old WMI board, where many of us first met, in the last 3-4 years, where you have 18 month old posts still on the first page, and half of them don't even have a reply?

If that's the kind of website y'all want, say it now, and John can pull the plug, save a %$%$%$%$load of money, and spend more time being a husband and father.

If you don't want to answer the %$%$%$%$ing question, or if stupid questions annoy the hell out of you, don't open the %$%$%$%$ing thread---how hard is that?

The board is not in existance just for the "newbies" Mike. Some of the regulars like to read "good" stuff occasionally. Sorry for criticizing the quality of the questions. Perhaps you would prefer I don't have an opinion.

Paul, I am never going to tell anyone not to have an opinion. But, after 2-3 days of seeing a new member's posts, and knowing that he's asking elementary questions that hold no interest, why does anyone bother reading them and let the posts get to them? That's what I have a hard time understanding

As funny as it may sound, I don't read every new thread/subject that goes up, especially since we just doubled the number of moderators. And I certainly don't reply to every one I read. There are even people on other websites that made my "ignore" list--like that CnR guy on SOL--simply because I want to toss my computer out the window :bsod: when I open them.

I'm happy to try to answer questions with my lousy opinions. I agree that having newbies makes the site fresh and in a lot of ways better. The more the merrier. I try to come on here and read new stuff and check out some of the cool plugs that guys build. I've learned a lot just by browsing different topics in here. But, it can be frustrating to come in here in the morning and see multiple posts from a new person wanting the answers to all of the questions that have been answered over and over in here. I guess what I'm saying is that moderation is good and most people won't jump down your throat if you ask one question at a time and take time to digest the responses. To use a surf fishing analogy, you wouldn't walk down to the water in your waders and splash in making all kinds of noise without checking the water to see if there are fish feeding in close. You'd probably approach slowly, take in the scene and slowly wade in before making your casts. Just my .02. Welcome to all of the newbies and enjoy the site.

Don't believe that any bashing is going on,

simply an effort to make the new member a bit more concise.
Is that so wrong  ?

Also, in the vein of this thread.............

44mike, here is some suggested reading where you will find alot of helpful info, also.
In no particular order:

Striper Surf by Frank Daignault
On the Run by David DiBenedetto
Reading the Water by Robert Post
Fishing NE: A RI Shore Guide by "On the Water"
To Catch a Bass by Tim Coleman
Atlantic Surf Fishing by Lester Boyd
The Complete Book of Striped Bass Fishing by Woolner and Lyman
The Compleat Guide to Surfcasting by Ron Arra
The Art of Surfcasting with Lures by Zeno Hromin
Secrets of Surf Fishing at night by Doc Muller
The Surf Caster's Guide to the Striper Coast by DJ Muller
Baits, Rigs, and Tackle by Vic Dunaway

There are tons more, EXCELLENT reads out there.................

But these should be gooooood starter selections for your library
and Trophy Brain. these guys are the masters. Anything by "Crazy Al" Alberto Knie/Steve McKenna/Bill "#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&" Nolan/"DZ" Dennis Zambrotta, mostly articles (see the net), and Canalman edits a sweet weekly publication "The Fisherman". ALL of these sources will answer many of yer questions and fine tune your posts, once you've had the chance to do some "homework" :read: :bl: :bl: :read:.

Questions are encouraged and answered in a variety of ways,
how else does one learn and are the wily veterans able to
keep it reel in here :as: :as:?

Thats exactly the tone of mikes post...and it was a little mello dramatic..No one said what you say mike...its just that in general people dont want to work at anything anymore..No one wants the site shut down...There is a search feature, and there is common sense..But in all fairness everyone is entiteled to an opinion right or wrong

You and I go back 10 years or so, Bill. Discussions make websites. Without them, they die. I undertand your point, and Paul's--you want to engage in discussions that have quality content. That's all well and good, but the way I look at it, there are two kinds of sharpies--those who want to engage in internet talk, and those who'd rather rub dogcrap in their hair than talk about fishing online. The first group are already on this site, and we'll never get the second group here, ever.

So, in order to grow--newbies have to be attracted. And my opinion--for whatever it's worth--is that ragging on the ones who do register and ask questions we find basic aren't the way to grow. You and I have seen other sites wither and die, for whatever reason. Usually, it's either too many fights, or not enough new blood.

Jesus H Christ on a Effing Crutch!

Don't like the questions, don't respond. He's asking basic elementary questions.

If you don't ask questions you'll never learn. This whole attitude of no one wanting to work for anything is bullshiite.I've been in the trades a long time and if I had a penny for every question NOT asked I'd be a freakin' billionare.....and some really STUPID mistakes would've been avoided.

Just stop.If you don't like 44mike44 questions then don't respond, don't offer an opinion.Just because he wants to learn doesn't mean he isn't willing to work for the end result. This guy's been judged by a couple and y'all don't even know him.

to defend my questions - its funny how you call them basic and all but when you actually read them theyre more opinion than anything. for example, what color pp? hmm do you personal have scientific evidence that proves you know the exact answer to that question? can the answers be found everywhere? obviously not because A: not everyone agreed. B: Theres a reason pp makes different colors. i was under the impression this is for discussion fishing related topics. if thats the case then maybe im not the one who needs the wake up call.

Im afraid to ask a question.

That would be the absolute worst case scenario for a fishing forum that is nothing less then driven by people looking for knowledge...

I hear it often in the shop about other websites and this one as well.

As Mike P said there's another group that tires of the fighting and attitudes and stops or slows their posting. I'd be included in that group.

Frustrate both ends of the spectrum and it definitely can slow down both the number of posts and the quality.

People should be able to ask questions without getting dumped on.

People should be able to make their own research, opinions, and I would hope, people should be tolerant enough to let other people have their own opinions.

People should also realize that generating 50 questions at once is pushing it a bit.

Guys, please let off the gas on Mike a bit. Mike, you are pushing for a lot of info hard and fast. The purpose of this site is not to lay the ins and outs of surf fishing all over the place or to spill ones guts of info learned because someone just asks for it. Some info is given, some is shared and some is asked for. None is a substitute for going out and doing it... Please participate in the site, have some fun, but take the foot off the gas a bit please. It goes a lot better that way - thanks!

John

I hear you, but it is a free country and people can say what they want whether we like it or not, no matter how much of a prick they are. Bottom line, some people like to create controversy so they can get attention, best thing the rest of us can do is ignore them and maybe they'll go somewhere else to throw their tantrums. And just a thought to some of those who feel there aren't enough good threads on this board worthy of their precious time, why don't you initiate some worthwhile and interesting topics instead of just stirring things up like a small child.

These fishing websites are here just for that.

Hello All:
I have been a member "lurker"of this forum for a couple of years now, and I find it to be informative and entertaining. However when it comes to asking questions I have been hesitant. partly because I can usually find the answers by searching previous posts and partly due to the attitude of some forum members that cant tolerate those of us with less experience. There are many helpful and smart people here, also some who are just smart asses. Yes there are many books available on the subject and I have read several, but sometimes I have a very basic question I would like to ask without being told by some that the information is already out there and to go find it. Overall this is a great forum and I will continue to visit here often.
Thanks Bob M

I too am a newbe to posting but have been registered for 1 1/2 yrs. I must admit I am reluctant to post most often due to the "old" guard" sarcasm, which doesn't always come off as intended in text. Ths sight offers a wealth of info, and I suggest you search for answers to question first, before posting, to avoid issues with others, that are more often than not, tongue-in-cheek. :buds:

I suggest if you feel a reply or post may cause contention, you should sleep on your reply, or at least pause first. It's too easy to say or write things you may regret of feel were inappropriate later on.

My $0.02 anyway.

I am also in the boat of not wanting to ask questions here and only reading this board instead of engaging in it. That's why I have gone to a different board where people show others newer to salt water fishing more respect. Honestly this guy was kind of asking for it with all his questions which were poorly written and easily researched. But who cares honestly? We are all just people no matter what fish we have caught or how long we have been doing it. We all deserve respect.

This is just an example of how this forum makes people feel. Maybe you people who flame might want to take a look in the mirror for some self evaluation.

I suck at fishing so what:) But I am great at standing by the ocean and feeling relaxed.

I apologize if my answer was misleading. After re-reading my entire post I see that how I meant it to sound and how it did sound are very different! C'mon now... why werent you reading my mind?
I certainly dont want to discourage ANYONE from asking questions if they have them. What I meant by my comment was that there ARE people that moan and groan about having to answer the "same questions" over and over...I was trying to make the point to 44Mike44 (and ALL newcomers) that these people do exist and complain and to take those people with a grain of salt. I whole heartedly agree that if you dont want to answer a newbie question than dont. Its that simple....there are plenty of others that will be glad to. As far as opinions go...it's true that you can ask 10 fishermen whats the best technique for spot X and you will get ten different answers!! Maybe even twelve or thirteen!!!

I think we all need a nice, long post from Notaro to lighten the mood in here. I've never met him, nor have I ever spoken with him, but his posts are funnier than anything I could find any place else on the internet. Please update us on your hairy girlfriend who farts a lot, your gimp roomate and your run ins with the campus judicial board. You can leave out the stuff about your bowel problems, though. Sometimes more is less.:lama:

A website about striper fishing and a guy new to the site asking questions about striper fishing and many of the asinine replies in this thread are the result?

All this as a result because two so called "pros" don't like to answer what they perceive to be "stupid" questions?Huh?
