In my 25 plus years surf fishing. The full moon has very, very rarely produced any better than any other night. Full moon is good for jacking blue claws. That's it. JMO That statement is simply not true...Some of my best nights have come on a full moon...My largest surf caught bass at 53lbs came on a full moon..The new moon is good also but I can say from experiance..The full moon is a great time to catch bass....In 2005 I had two 40lb fish one night after the full moon bright as could be... Forget the moon, Since boat fishing I have had large fish in 5 foot of water on the sunniest of days.....There is nothing wrong with the full moon...That is a myth Gunpowder 03-03-2008, 07:44 PM my largest was caught two days after the full moon on a plastic.... so i would have to say that big fish can be taken during full moons. *** right place, right time :humpty: *** fishaholic18 03-03-2008, 07:51 PM Opposite for me.....no moon has shown me nothing......I have done well under the moonlight! But I really don't believe that it makes a huge difference either way. This is from personal experience. Everyone also says that Togging on a moon tide is NO GOOD. I had my BEST day Blackfishing on the day of the full moon. Anything can happen. cow tamer 03-03-2008, 08:39 PM Usually concentrate on strong currents during full moon using bucktails. Olive color Mambo Minnow off the beach. Smaller offerings on a full moon. That's the ticket! BassDawg 03-04-2008, 05:42 AM Although my "full moon experience" is much less than 25 years, the biggest BITES i've experienced have been either on or during the 4 day window of the full ~at my biggest producer. Two have been cloud covered and pissing/pouring rain, but with huge tides and drastic changes in water volume/currents ~nonetheless~ and, there is something to "full moon fever" for feesh and humans, imho!!! Big CHUNKS of fresh Bunker, Live Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels, any wood that is parrot or yellow/white, yellow/yellow with a red chin. jig and a pig. throw what ya know, and believe in tha most!! Works everytime.....................:humpty:  :humpty: emgred 03-04-2008, 08:36 AM Moon Tides!!! :btu: I have found overcast full moon to produce better than a bright full moon. Also love new moon tides. That being said, this past October, under bright moon conditions, we hammered them for a week with big Pearl Spot Tsunami Shads. DZ 03-04-2008, 09:09 AM I can tell you that from my own surf fishing experience that my success during the bright moon phase is limited. Sure I've had good nights during the bright moon on occasion but they are the exception. I've always needed to work harder and changed my tactics during the moon to take bass. The bass may still be there but may be a bit finicky. There are many things you can do to improve your odds such as tying direct. I've penned an article that will soon be submitted to Canalman for possible publication in his magazine - it will cover bright moon tactics that have been successful for me in the past. Sounds like many here don't have as much a problem during the bright moon as I do - so no need to mention here what my favorite full moon plugs are. Shoot me a pm if interested. DZ WadingWill 03-04-2008, 09:51 AM Ask 10 different guys this question, and chances are you'll have 10 different answers. It's all about what works for you. Use the plug you have the most confidence in, as what works for others may not work for you. Vogt 03-04-2008, 10:19 AM The same plugs I use on a new moon. And of course, eels. OLD GOAT 03-04-2008, 11:27 AM Idon,t care for all the weed during a big tide. eel beard. chris L 03-04-2008, 02:22 PM butt oh I thought you meant when Im mooned or mooning . UB moons ! numbskull 03-04-2008, 04:07 PM Usually I struggle plugging under a bright moon, but I did have one decent night this past summer fishing a topwater plug (surf howdy) over fish feeding on krill. Tagger 03-04-2008, 05:52 PM I also struggle fishing a full moon ,,, A couple of years ago I had an every cast night on a blue/white needle with the big arse moon right in front of me .. Hadn't happened before or since .. onecastmike2003 03-04-2008, 06:06 PM fish dont bite on the full moon... before or after.... that when the %$%$%$%$ happens.. ask bill lol StriperSniper 03-04-2008, 07:19 PM No, there is nothing WRONG with it. Striperhound 03-05-2008, 07:08 AM cant beat live eels on a full moon, second runner up would be a needle with an eel skin over it justfishin 03-07-2008, 08:46 AM I have caught some fish over the years on the full moon, but generally the fishing on the Cape, is far better closer to the new moon. The fish here always seem difficult to catch when the moon is BRIGHT. This does not seem to be the case on a full moon with heavy cloud cover if you find fish. Anything in white, yellow, pink, or variations of these such as wonderbread or chicken scratch will do, and eels are always a good choice, regardless of moon phase. piemma 03-07-2008, 10:16 AM Completely outside the box. July full moon, dead low tide, 2:00 AM. Black jointed Danny (my own). Finally dropped the fish after she straightened a 3/0 3X treble and bent the lip all to hell. You never know. MikeToole 03-07-2008, 12:38 PM Never really put much stock in the opinion that fishing on the full moon isn't as good as during the new moon. Just like changing tides and wind, you may need to fish in different places than you would on a new moon. Maybe the shallow calm areas won't be as good. Rivers and breachways with deeper moving water have produced well on the full moon for me. The full moon will develop shadow areas that will produce and if the water is rough then it doesn't really seem to matter. The bigger flood tides in marshes open up new areas for the fish to work. On the brightest of nights I've seen hundreds of fish in shallow water grubing for worms on flats that are not normally covered. Just need to find these area. chris L 03-07-2008, 02:12 PM I fish when ever I can get too . If the moon is full then I am going to cast eels , white jig , a swimmer or a needlefish . I dont believe anything about it being to bright . find shadows and fish them . or not . the fish are out there and I am going to fish for them . I may not catch them but I am going to fish them . can I get an ahem brother smith AHEM jimmy z 03-09-2008, 07:49 AM One of my first plugs on any night will be a darter. If I hook up with the darter, the darter stays on. Just keep trying. Some say yellow, I've heard that for many years. But if ya wanna know if there are bass where you're casting, use an eel. You'll know for sure. Steve K 03-09-2008, 08:28 AM I too have done much better during the new moon than the full moon. The worst nights for me are the full moon combined with a flat sea. I go with light colored plugs - white or yellow during the full moon like a habs needle or a bm atom jr. shadow 03-09-2008, 09:27 AM I'll take the darkest of nights over a full moon any time, however I don't rule out full moons.I will fish whenever I can and make the best out of the condtions.when fishing full moons I will only fish eels, seen pencils work on bright nights too. one time last fall they took bass for my partner at night that wouldn't even take the eels.I remember two good fish that I took on full moons at low tide with no surf one was 28# I pulled out of a rock pile in 3' of water after a long night of nothing fishing a strong rip.The other came from the same place diffrent spot same thing fished the rocks and moving water all night for nothing walking out I made a cast on the sandy flat beach at low water could see down the whole beach.got a 26# fish.sometimes we know to much. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
