Not sure how this works; I just joined and I am trolling for info. Is there good fishing off the Cockeast river in Westport,ma when the herring spawn. Is so what is the right timing and is there a suitable kayak launch nearby ?
Thanks
welcome to the site jack-
Ive never fished it, but as far as timing goes, I do well fishing herring run areas at high noon on a sunny day when things start to heat up. I think that I do well at that strange time of the day because the herring choose to move around in daylight and hunker down at night.. who knows... since you are interested in it and have never fished it, the more you poke around in your yak, the more you will learn about what the fish are up to. Look for ambush points that the bass would use for attacking herring moving up the river like boulder fields, drop offs, points with ledges off of them. Osprey are your friends as well.. follow them and more often than not they will lead you to fish.
Does the Cockeast dump into the ocean or is it landlocked? I am not sure. Is that over west of Elephant Rock BC?:walk:

Welcome K J
If by the Cockeast river you mean the brook that goes from Cockeast pond into the Westbranch of the Westport River there can be some good fishing in the area and you can get your yak in off River road by parking on the side at the run and walking it down to the river. As far as best times and places if I told you that I would have my boys cut off by many here and rightfully so. You already have a good time in mind just find out when the herring are in (next week or two) did I say that out load? Then start exploring good luck and hope to see you out there I started kayak fishing last season with my son and had a ball the few times I could get out. By the way guys I now have a cottage:D on the west branch just up from the run and will have the Plain Jane docked there this season. Now all I need is the time to fish.

I envy you. One of my favorite places. I fish the river during weekdays in my tin boat. Fluke is my goal. Maybe I will see you one day. P.

Correction, now all you need is to ....,,, LEAVE THE KEY ON THE BOAT. :hee:......check it often for korker prints and stretch marks from the oars I'll be using in the case you forget to leave the key...
Never tell a fool :jester: where to find false gold Greg -
A fool I yam ~ with binoculars even.
FYI - I believe parking is pretty scarce down that way, especially if you're not a resident.
