Have my eye on a new 10' Super Surf. I throw sluggos and other plugs up to 4oz. What rod would you guys suggest I get? I was thinking either the 2-6oz model or the 1-4oz model(too lazy to look up the model numbers). Thoughts, Questions, Comments,Concerns?

i've got the 9' 1-4 oz took it out for a test drive throwin the 12" sluggos (2.9oz) it was only a dozen casts or so but it seem to handle them ok. the rod was a lot better on the nines. i was lookin at the 10' but it felt a little stiff for throwing the 1.5oz nine inch sluggos and being able to feel them too! (i'm kind of a brute though!)
for a limited test i liked the rod a lot.

If 4 oz is the most you'll ever throw, the M should be a big enough gun for you. That's the one rated 1-4.

Yea, I think I'm going to have to give them a test run. I held the 2-6oz rod and liked it and felt it would be ok for the sluggos. I never got my hands on the 1-4oz model.

Most Lamiglas rods aren't rated very accurately. These are. I found the two 10 footers very similar. As rods rated 1-4 and 2-6 shouldn't be all that different. I went for the 2-6 model because I want to use it in the Canal, to give my back an occasional break from my All Star 1209. I could have lived with the 1-4 in most other places.

I waggled a factory built 1-4 today with the concept guides..Lots of guides and the butt section of the handle is too long..Whay do they do that???
Felt kinda sloppy.Or more parabolic than the gsb120 1M.I kinda doubt it's abilty to cast 3 oz without getting mushy..With lots of reverb after it will be a great distance robber. It reminds me of my XRA 1322 in a 10 ft version. One they don't really have in their line-up.So thats nice..On the plus side.. The parabloic action is more braid friendly. It will keep hooks in fish better, cast eels better, an wup fish faster.Kinda top heavy with all the guides..Too much rod to work sluggo's like Stevie McKenna..U want a 9 fter for that.

They took measurement that would fit the greatest # of people. The handle length is 1/2" shorter on avrage than the most popular measurement when guys have order a custom rod .
It is better than any measurement that Lamiglas has done in the past.

What does it measure I bet it is around 26 inches..I think it is too long.Like it is set up for bait chunkers.I am 6'1" with a 29 inch wing span.I think if thats where most people put the seat they are not getting the most out of thier cast's, as IMO the long handle jambs me up.

Exactly. When younger I built a bunch of rods whose handles are now too long (using the armpit/extended arm method of spacing). Casting on a beach with good footing, a full stride, and full body turn while in T shirt is not the way to figure out how long you want your handle, unless that's how you fish. A rod built for plugging from bad footing while wearing waders, a sweatshirt, and a spray top fishes better with a reel seat as much as 2" closer to the butt than an open beach rod built for a few long casts each day. Age, expanding waist size, and diminishing flexibilty also are worth considering if you're laying out serious money for a rod that should last you decades.

Talked to one of the reps at MSBA show and he said the MH-although rated 2/6-would not throw 6oz very well unless lobbing bait. Wonder if it's the same with the upper end of the M stick. Will the 120 2MH blanks be on sale? Hoping to get one made up. See you next weekend.

That is why I was thinking of getting the 2-6oz model, because the same thing is most likely true for the 1-4 model. Most rods do not throw the highest rated plugs well, that the rod says it does.(does that make sense?)

I sent an email to the sales person listed on the Lamiglas website regarding this topic. I have not heard back from him yet.

Good guess. I got just about 23" to the center of the seat on the 1MH.

How does the new Super Surfs compare to the XS10MS and the XS10 MHS 2 piece models. I guess I'm asking what makes the SS model worth the extra money.

under wraped alconite guides. 2 more guides than the XS series, alconite tip.
Double cork tape on fore grips because it is a thinner blank. Higher strain graphite than the XS series. composit tip made for Braided lines.

This thread brings me to asking a question, I have two rods that are wrapped with the reel seat at 27". I have always felt there was too much butt length. If I am to cut two or three inches from the butt, what effect-if any will cutting the butt have on the rod itself? Will it throw the balance of the rod off?

I hate cutting the butt off I bought a ten fter not a 9'8" rod.I have cut off the reel seat with my 4 inch grinder and my diamond wheel I use for tile.I filled it in with cork tape and taped the reel on.I have also just taped over the reel seat an taped a 700 dollar saltiga reel to my 1209 canal rod..I have cut some off the but before Also.Do 1 inch at a time.Just to be sure..

A couple of inches off the butt will have no negative impact on the balance or casting distance. If it makes it more comfortable to fish, why wouldn't you do it? I would be suprised if you hand someone a 9'9" rod and tell em its a 10'er if they can tell it isn't 10'.

I have an update from the email I sent Lami.
The sales person told me to just go down to a B&T shop and just test the rod with what I like to throw. Did not give me any other advice as to which rod he thinks would be best with how I want to use it. All and all I guess he is right though. Everybody can have an opinion on what rod will work best, but it all about what rod feels best for the person using it. I'll be taking him up on his advise.

Haven't gotten it yet. I just decided that, that is what I am going to go with and have somebody make it for me. I wish I already had it.
