The Dad Fisherman 03-17-2008, 09:01 AM Unfortunately I have to bring my son up to Nashua NH in the Morning for a Merit Badge College....he's in the home stretch and still fired up so I'm gonna ride it out with him.
Then Saturday Afternoon the PI Surfcasters are having there kids club meeting and I get to be the featured entertainment....gonna show them some basic plug-building stuff, see if we can get the next generation of Plug-Builders going. :D
Finaddict 03-17-2008, 11:52 AM I will have Sydney that weekend. If the weather is okay, I will bring her, otherwise, we will be pursuing other ventures that are more appropriate for a 3-year-old. Let's hope for warm, dry and sunny weather.
Squibby17 03-17-2008, 03:53 PM My girlfriend and I have wanted to dedicate a day to charity and this would be perfect! I'll check in with her and make sure that date works. Bob I might Pm you for some details.

I haven't been on the beach in a long time Don.
They are letting 5 trucks on and thats it, Everyone else will need to park at a lot 1-7 and walk on.
Make sure when you talk to the people in charge you tell them your a fisherman, and your representing MBBA
I will be picking up bags and larger trash and hauling it off to the dumpster
Bring gloves leather is best, they are suppling the rest.
Squibby17 I will put you on my Buddy list so you can pm me
This is a great way to find Plugs, I usually find 5 or 6

Nice try Bob, I'm not falling for that trick again ... :rotf2:
The Dad Fisherman 03-18-2008, 07:17 AM Bob, can you give me the specifics on this or a link to a website about it. We have a meeting tonight and I can put it out to the membership so they are aware of it.
american spirit 03-18-2008, 12:59 PM fox 25 showed a special on how the beach is erroding. i wasn't sure how much of an issue it actually is. isn't it just a matter of time before all beachfront homes in the world are under water.
Plum Crazy 03-18-2008, 02:29 PM Bob, can you give me the specifics on this or a link to a website about it. We have a meeting tonight and I can put it out to the membership so they are aware of it.
There is no link. This is the Refuge we're talking about.:faga:
Kevin is aware of the clean up.
I believe he is on the list to drive a truck out.
plankton 03-18-2008, 02:44 PM Unfortunately I'm working Saturdays, sounds like a good time for a good cause, hope the weather cooperates.
Squibby17, nice avatar, I think I recognize that place.:uhuh:

gone fishin 03-27-2008, 10:17 PM To all the MBBA members - be sure to stop by my Jeep and say hello. We want a good showing for those of us who fish this beach regularly. See you there!:ss:
Plum Crazy 03-28-2008, 03:35 PM I am extremely disappointed in the interest in this.
This is the first time in many, many years they have even allowed us to do this.
When I was told we could only have 5 trucks on the beach I thought we would have to say 'sorry' to many people.
We now have 2 pick up trucks.
Mine and Tattoo's.
We have a re-evaluation coming up in less than 2 years.
That decides weather we have continued access or not.
Every little bit helps. We need to show them we care and we need to do that in numbers.
I just can't believe we fought for 5 trucks and can only get 2:biglaugh:
Please people if you can spare even a half an hour to fill bags we will pick them up.
No need to drag them out as in the last few years.
Anything and everything you can do to ensure the safety of our access to the Refuge will be greatly appreciated.
They need to know we care. PLEASE?
Our access is always in trouble.
Step up and help us now.
We need a show of good faith.
20 minutes, an hour or all day.
We need your help.
LeCounts1099 03-28-2008, 04:37 PM If I wasn't stuck in Yuppie Manhattan Bob & P.C... I'd be there to help in a heartbeat! :wavey:
For N.Y.ers reading here (i.e., you dumb know- nothings like me!)... the BAG "Bass Beach" clean- up in Bayside Queens is 3 weeks from now!-- that's where you can do YOUR part!
(Though I wonder who these cretins are exactly... who leave trash behind after fishing in a beautiful area? :fury: )
tattoobob 03-28-2008, 05:31 PM Most trash on this beach is wash up from boaters and there is a river north of PI and the current sweeps around the Island and all sorts crap washes up. of corse there are a few doosh bags that leave there trash.
Plum Crazy 03-28-2008, 05:53 PM In all reality you can't place the blame on fishermen or beach goers.
The stuff comes in twice a day with the tides.
I'd say most of it comes from anywhere but the beach.
My guess is allot comes from big boats and most of it is just washed down the river and ends up here.
That is not to say that we do not have our share of slobs enjoying their day at the beach, but in general this is just everything the cat dragged in during the winter storms.
I tend to get a little over emotional about slobs on the beach.
I have no qualms confronting them.
But we really only can do what we can and that is show up for these things and get in thier face.
The general public is unbelievable!
I have found that the fishermen care more and will do more.
Not in this case.
I have had about a 2% response to this clean up. It's killing me.
Let me tell you this story and you can decide for yourself how far I will go to ensure our access.
I was just walking on Salisbury with a few empty bags, picking up trash. The dumpster was only a few yards from me.
This man and woman were walking their dog, they were heading off the beach.
I had a long way to go.
The man walks up to me and says "nice job you are doing here, while you are at it take this" he hands me his bag of dog poop!
I think I was slack jawed for 10 minutes!.
He was only a few yards from the dumpster.Going off the beach!
If I wasn't with my respected organization I think I would have had a mental breakdown.
But nope. I was cool. I offered him one of my trash bags and invited him to help us.
He turned me down flat. He had other things to do.
I wonder how he will feel in a few years when his dog can't crap on the beach anymore.
One other time I was fishing a stiff east wind in spotty rain.
I was there since 4 AM.
I was in heaven because I figured there will be no beach goers on a day like this.
STOOOPID ME. 10 AM and here they come.
With their silly umbrellas.
One family of about 5 comes down bringing everything but the kitchen sink.
They lasted about 15 minutes. Their umbrella turned inside out about 3 seconds after they tried putting it up.
They packed up and left.
They left the broken umbrella too.
I trudged over picked up their broken umbrella and followed them to the parking lot.
I got to their car and said "hey you forgot your umbrella"
He said "ya, it's trashed"
I said " "well if it's trash why did you leave it here on the beach? Do you always leave trash on our beach?"
He had no answer for me. He stood there dumbfounded.
I told him I would be more than happy to take HIS trash home and dispose of it myself.
He snatched the broken umbrella from me threw it in his car and slammed the door.
Hmmm I said to myself, these are the rich yuppies trying to stop ME from fishing my beaches. Hmmmm.
Plum Crazy 03-28-2008, 05:55 PM Man that was a long tirade. I don't even want to read it.
Sorry:wave:
LeCounts1099 03-28-2008, 06:03 PM PC... I know exactly the type of which you write about above... :(
And it's the most infuriating thing you'll ever see! Nature is indeed many idiots' waste disposal dump! :cens:
We feel your pain! :crying:
C'mon N. Bostonians / N. Shore guys-- get down there & help out please! :kewl:
Plum Crazy 03-28-2008, 06:17 PM Thanks Le Counts.
I have moved beyond the infuriation and focus only on what I can do.
I'll tell ya one thing though, I sleep very well after a day of beach cleaning.
It is food for my soul.
It gives me a chance to give back to something I love so much and get so much from.
I don't get so angry at the crap on the beach anymore. I just pick it up.
I have cleaned many beaches from Plum to Race in the last 10 years and I have heard every excuse known to man as to why people can't do it.
Hell I even worked every clean up one year in a leg cast.
I paid dearly each night, but it was worth it.
I have lost many hours of payable work time and sacrificed family and friends.
All to save our access. For me and for the future.
All I know is that when they close the beach for good it will not be because I didn't try.
GooGoo Man 03-28-2008, 09:20 PM I just saw this thread for the first time, I will be there with my son (7 yrs. old) & my wife, I also have a red ford f-350, if it is needed I would be happy to be the 3rd truck. :lama:
gone fishin 03-28-2008, 09:39 PM Glad to have you aboard - sent PM.:hihi:
tattoobob 03-29-2008, 02:46 PM It was a great day we took a lot of junk off the beach, I filled my truck many times. I did have a small problem and basically limped home, thanks to everyone who showed up.
Plum Crazy 03-30-2008, 06:49 AM :btu:Thank YOU Bob.
It was a great day and we made a huge dent.
The trucks took a beating. I hope you can easily fix yours.
I think you and Jules made more trips up and down than any of us.
We stopped picking up traps so we could fit more junk in.
It would take 20 trucks a week of working all day everyday to get all those traps in.
I couldn't believe how many were between 5 and 7.
Lots of them in perfect shape too.
There was Girl Scout troop and a church group helping out and I was very happy to see many of the regular fishermen.
Kudos to all!:btu:
MrHunters 03-30-2008, 07:06 AM good job guys!
though i had prior engagements that i could not change, i will be making the next cleanup day. I don't fish off the beach, I do boat out of the Merrimack, and like you said, boaters carry alot of the blame. Especially in that location!
When I fish out of Gloucester I often see this boat that does a booze cruise. On more than one occassion I see beer cans go flying overboard and I just wonder how much trash that ONE boat dumps into our waters during a season
Makes sure you post the next day here!
Well done, again!
Bob, hope its a cheap fix. maybe you can find the part next clean up :)

MrHunters 03-30-2008, 07:39 AM brrrrrr
tattoobob 03-30-2008, 09:49 AM Nice Pics, alot of trash was taken off and that dumpster was full then the back-hoe crushed it down a couple of times, it would have been good to have it both weekend days
the truck is in need of repair it has been sense the end of last season, and I have been putting it off. I have a brother that is a mechanic also an apprentice that I work with is also a mechanic so repairs will be less than if I had to go to a shop.
Plum Crazy 03-30-2008, 10:27 AM LOL the backhoe crushed it down AGAIN after we were done.
We came off at about 2:30, not enough time to go back out again for their 3:00 quit time.
2 days would have been great.
togue 03-30-2008, 11:14 AM Yeah, it was cold and WINDY! Thanks Gone Fishin for the ride back to Lot #7, it was a long walk into the wind, filled many a bag-o-trash on the way.
Sorry I got off to a late start, first chance I had to get a decent night of sleep in a almost a month and a half. When I got there they weren't letting anyone else out with trucks, so I went to the south end where I figured there would be fewer people picking up trash.
There were quite a few volunteers there, but I got the sense that aside from a few small groups most who were there filling trash bags chimed in only because they they saw the beach clean-up signs after they got there, but at least they did volunteer and help out. For the most part it seemed to me that only the surf fishermen/women came deliberately.
Oh, and I do apologize to the many birders I had to work around. Hope we didn't disturb your tranquil sojourn or offend you too much by poluting your telescopic view with the sight of a human being moving about the refuge with a purpose.
Sorry for the rant, its just that my "free" time is precious and few, so I get a little irked when I have a job to do and and my progress keeps getting inhibited by the devil may care "fart around and take our sweet time" without pitching in at all crowd. Especially when I know they are the source of many of the complaints that are fueling access limits and keeping the fishing crowd off the few and far between fishing spots in order to protect a bird that by and large is too stupid to get out of its own way.
Guess I'm still a little cranky....
:ss:
Plum Crazy 03-30-2008, 11:44 AM LOL I just about fell off my chair when I read that! Too funny Togue:rotflmao:
There must have been 30 of them with their telescopes watching us unload the trucks.
Oh thanks for the laugh.
We are cleaning out the truck now.
I think we can build a sandbox in the back yard now.:bl:
tattoobob 03-30-2008, 11:51 AM Martian and others, this clean up was for the refuge,
along with us fishermen there were boys and girl scouts and a church group I am sure there were a few concerned people that just wanted to help out. remember all help is welcomed
There wasn't really a big announcement about the clean up until it was put on 3 fishing forums or there wouldn't have been many fishermen either we have the MBBA to thank
bassackward 03-30-2008, 03:23 PM Oh, and I do apologize to the many birders I had to work around. Hope we didn't disturb your tranquil sojourn or offend you too much by poluting your telescopic view with the sight of a human being moving about the refuge with a purpose.
:ss:
That's those that even got of there car. All the people helping out in the cleanup were friendly to me and my 4 yr old daughter. The birders seemed anoyed to share the view with us and our bags of trash.
Overall, with the cold and wind it was no problem helping out. Tattoo (whom I've yet to meet) did a great job of getting the word out and he should feel good about it. I feel good just chipping in for 2 hours.
Enjoyed finishing the afternoon off at the PISC jr. program with the Kevins involving all the kids in lure building. My daughter helped build a tiny spook (Sknunky Joe)and I have the parts for my son, who couldn't attend, to finish a bottle neck popper.
gone fishin 03-31-2008, 12:59 AM [QUOTE=togue;578091]Yeah, it was cold and WINDY! Thanks Gone Fishin for the ride back to Lot #7, it was a long walk into the wind, filled many a bag-o-trash on the way.
Thanks to you Martin! You walked and picked a good half of that beach and left a truck load of rubbish for us to pick up. I stopped and started to pick up a couple of cloth bags that I mistook for rubbish. When looking closely at them I realized that they belonged to a group of bird lookers. They questioned me and I asked if they were volunteers for the project and got only a "no way " from them.
When we met up in lot one after loading the dumpster I didn't get a chance to ask you if you swam the plugs and how they were. How was the action?
Thanks again to all the fishermen that spend time on that beach and showed up to help out.
By the way The refuge is now officially "closed for plover recovery"
togue 04-01-2008, 07:19 PM TattooBob - Sorry for the rant! As an avid surfcaster I guess I need to work harder to be tolerant and supportive of everyone's right to beach access, whether they support mine or not.
As I said, I found many volunteers out there. What's more, the folks I encountered who were actually helping out were friendly and looked to be enjoying it almost like a normal part of their "day at the beach". I doubt much if any of the trash this time of year came from beachgoers, most likely washed out from the Merrimack or off a boat. Wish I could find the guy who likes orange juice in a peculiarly shaped little plastic bottle, I must have picked up a hundred of them all along the beach.
Anyway, you got the word out Bob, and many thanks to you and the MBBA for that. I hope the Refuge staff appreciated the effort everyone put in, maybe they should permit the public in general, and the fishing community in particular even more opportunities to show we can and do help out and hold up our end.
GoneFishin - Wind made it difficult, but I did try and cast a few near the rocks, and I thought they looked pretty good. A father with his two kids came over and asked some questions about what I was fishing for, and indicated he wanted to get his family into the surf fishing act this summer, so I pointed him in the direction of Kay's for help gearing up.
Stopped at another spot on the way back up the Merrimack, got a lot of test casts in, took a lot of notes, I think I have a couple of winners but still need some more tuning and testing.
The Spring run is almost here!!!!
