OK. Well after my search for an Abu 7500CT and getting my hands on one, I have began to have mixed feelings about using this reel out in the surf because a few people have told of what a collectible reel it is. So, I was wondering if I should go for one of the newer Abu made reels like the Abu 7000 C3 CT, buy a Abu 7500 C3 and convert it to a CT, or just use this black beauty. I want to pair it up with a 10'6" to 11' rod. Was hoping that some of you guys would have some suggestions for that. I want to go custom on a Lamiglas or Rainshadow, but have also been looking at the new Saltiga Surf rod in 11'3" casting model. Any thoughts or ideas? I would mainly be using this rig as a chunking rig.

I did some chunking last year. Started with a 7000CL, then Calcutta 700(both with levelwinds), then settled for a Diawa Slosh. Just gonna use the slosh next year, fairly cheap too.

Most important question is what do you plan on doing with it? Put that on a 11' blank you don't exactly have an eeling stick. Are you chunking?

I don't know if I would say the reel is collectible, it is certainly desirable for a lot of uses. It's a good solid reel.

My plan when I bought it was to use it as a chunking reel for big baits.... The highest Abu I had prior was a 6500 C3 for a 7' casting rod for schoolies so I have never tried something of this size. And yes John, you are right.... I would not say collectible just something that is very desirable right now because the reels are not made in Sweden.

I think big rods and big reels are over rated unless you have good experience slowly increasing in size with them. Big change from a 6500C3 on a 7 to an 11 and change on a 7500 non-levelwind. Not saying it ain't worth it to try but there might be more bumps and bruises along the way. A 10' with a 7 series levelwind might have been a more intermediate step...

(course, I'm a wuss and use levelwind for all casting with conventionals)

Good point.... I mean I do all my surf fishing with spinning reels on 10' and 11' rods, but had wanted to try the chunking thing this summer. Isn't the abu 7000 series the same spool size though as the 7500? I still may get something smaller.... I am really open to all opinions. This is definately something new for me.

personally my go to road is a 9ft tica with a abu garcia 7000ic3. i love it

Ahh, I get you. Yes, same size spool. And I see you are used to the longer sticks. I misread before and thought you were going from a 7 to an 11 with nothing in between. I'll shut up now :hihi:

I rarely chunk but when I do (or more accurately if I did) it is with a 7000CL on a 10' stick. I do it so rarely, haven't in a few years, that I don't have a chunk stick anymore.

treat yourself good...use it. Its desireable to so many now because its a great fishing reel. It needs to be fished to be great. :)

i don't know what I was thinking.... I guess I just wanted some reassurance :humpty: So yea.... def gonna keep this then and throw it on a nice stick. Any people have this on a particular rod that they like and balances well? Looking for 6+ oz weights.

Sometimes I use the good china and crystal when we get pizza....why would I risk breaking them over pizza you ask? Because I dont have fancy dinner parties and I will be damned if I go to the grave and never got to enjoy them....

Rainshadow 1209 with that reel will be able to land Moby #^&#^&#^&#^&! Its a lot of rod to start conventional with but for the heavier weights you mention, it will flex some so you should be able to cast well.

Put in 2 brakes , set the tension knob so that the reel only turns once or twice ofter the sinker hits the ground if you let it go at shoulder height , go to a beach with wind blowing sideways and practice. In no time you'll have the tension totally off and casting into , with , or across the wind however you want.

You are goin g to love the feeling of having the conventional once you hook up. You are in control way more than you would be with most spinners.

My mother wanted a ruby ring FOREVER (and my father isnt the jewelry buying type) well he finally bought her one and she keeps it in the jewelry box so she will have something nice to pass on to her family....I told her it would bring us more joy to see her wear it NOW...

1209 :agree: I love mine for the fact that I can take it to hatteras (please let that continue :( ) and throw 8 and bait at the point and hang with all those 12'ers and then go to the canal and throw 3 and 4 oz jigs. Not for schoolies though.

Does the 1209 still give you the feeling of a fight if its say a keeper bass?? Or is it really only geared toward like 20+ pound bass or whatever..... Was just wondering.

I don't think any rod that can cast 6+ will give you a good fight feeling on a 28 inch bass. The two needs are pretty far apart. However when a monster grabs your bait , you will enjoy the fight with the heavy rod. Hope you win!
