View Full Version : How many??
DJ Muller 04-09-2008, 05:09 PM How many plug bags do each of you usualy have loaded ready to go?
Going through my stuff I noticed that I have four different plug bags loaded and ready, each loaded with carefully picked lures all meant for different times and places that I fish locally throughout the season.

Must be....:cheers2: :bl:
numbskull 04-09-2008, 07:06 PM I load a bag specifically for each trip. I consider it part of the challenge to pick the right plugs for a given night, spot, and conditions. I try to limit myself to a 3 tube bag though often I break down and carry a 5 tube bag .
DJ Muller 04-09-2008, 07:18 PM I found another one that I forgot about so I guess that makes 5
1). I use a standard all around bag that has a wide assortment of lures...ya never know what a new tide will bring. That would be the AS 12 slot, 2). I have an evening-tide river bag loaded with small poppers, small plastics, small bucktails w/twister tails, and of course shads. This is a small 3 slot AS bag, shorty (small lures). 3). We have had a lot of big ugly bluefish in the spring/summer when the big bunkys are around and I love catching them...at least until the big moo-moo's show. So I have a large VS bag loaded w/ all types of lures that I like to watch get cremated and anialated. Big wood poppers and the such, sometimes they only like wood swimmers. 4). Is one of my night bags when I go to a particular fast moving water spot. It carrys an assortment of black tins Pt. Jude and AOK as well as Tsunami TS Reverb rattle traps (they're great) and of course Sharpie treated shads. For this I carry another 3 tray AS, light and not burdensome. 5). My night bag when working the jetties and inlets in the dark. Loaded with dark plugs of wood and plastic, specifically blurple and white ML's.
All bags are loaded and ready for the switch from a morning on the rocks to a night in the river to a bluefish blitz the next afternoon. No panic or forgotten lures all ready to go.
I normally also carry a small AS pouch for 'shad control.' Or the big pouch for Slug-Go's.
Whew, all that makes me do this----> :eek5:
:fishin:

BF- I am going to put a BigFish on the end of my line and it better catch me a ....BIG FISH :biglaugh:.
I can't wait to throw that jointed!! I got plans for that thing :rocketem:
Adam_777 04-09-2008, 07:26 PM DJ after SWE show I had you pinned as a hardcore bait guy.You have bait soaking while plugging also ?
ilovetwofish 04-09-2008, 07:44 PM 1 bag with 3 trays loaded with a assorment of stuff. Now when im on the boat the big bag comes out flies, plugs, swimmers, metal, plastic, and so on and so on.
Rob Rockcrawler 04-09-2008, 07:46 PM I keep a huge rubber maid rigged with slots for all my plugs in my truck. Then pick and choose what i need for a trip. 6 tube bag with way to much crap crammed in it.
spence 04-09-2008, 07:53 PM Two...
I keep my med Skinz bag loaded with what I need for the evening and the large skinz bag in the car with extra stuff.
If I'm headed say, to BI for the weekend, say, I leave both of them in the trunk and fish with a handfull of Scuds and ho'd plugs for the week :p

Bronko 04-09-2008, 08:14 PM I am generally throwing eels.... but I do have a couple plug bags. If I am in a plugging mode I generally use the same bag, a 10 tube Cayon bag, that I will fill with what I think I'll need before I leave the house.

Adam-
Hardcore bait guy??? :rotflmao:
Somebody wasn't listening!! :sleeps:
Seriously, I said I chunk only when the chunking iron is red-hot for large (small window). It is the most reliable way to take big bass, a technique over looked by most.
To answer your question I only chunk when I chunk (despite what an upcoming article might say ), absolutely no plugging. Chunking offers you a shot at a (very) large so being 40 yards down the beach when you rod goes off is...ummm :hs: ...not something you want to do.
DJ Muller 04-09-2008, 08:44 PM ditto on that. Realistically I use 4 plugs. thats it.:sspam:
Which four if you don't mind?
cheferson 04-09-2008, 08:53 PM Whats a plug bag?
Mr. Sandman 04-10-2008, 07:10 AM I have several most are not used. I take two with me and leave one in the truck with a load of plano boxes.
After RISSA I see the ultimate backup bag I want for the vehicle...the jumbo Aquaskins, I can load that and be done-with-it. If I want to carry it on the beach however, I will need to hire a caddy, as it is a monster bag.
Bronko 04-10-2008, 07:18 AM Which four if you don't mind?
Mine: (colors depend on bait and moonphase)
Schoolbus Bomber
Mag Darter
MAC Danny
Habs needlefish
Cranium 04-10-2008, 07:30 AM I have three, one big old school sail cloth bag, I fill with big plugs. two smaller ones that I fill with smaller plugs, plastic. I also put a locked box of plugs in my suv when I go fishing to change/exchange plugs if the conditions are different when I get to the location
RIROCKHOUND 04-10-2008, 07:44 AM Whats a plug bag?
Its the thing on my belt that gets used if it's windy or the yellow-eyes show up
I have 2:
One small surfcaster on my belt w/ 3 plugs
one med. Skinz for occasional plug trips...
less is more!!!
emgred 04-10-2008, 09:23 AM DJ
I have several bags (5 or 6) that are relatively small, and as you have done, have them set up for very specific spots. There is a lot of gear/plugs that go into the back of the Jeep as well.
A small Surfcaster five tube always on my belt - 3 Bombers, last two slots rotate and pretied leaders.
The other small or tall smallish bags are set up for various spots ie: Inlet bag, Back Bay bag, Night Beach bag, Dawn Bag (That one might even get a Jersey Death Machine...:rotflmao: Just Kidding - a SS Sinking Littleneck)
I used to carry larger bags, but as my collection of plugs and jigs grew along with my logs and knowledge of my local spots, I found it much easier to use small bags and stop lugging around things that were not getting used at a particular spot.
DJ - How are you?
Ed
keeperreaper 04-10-2008, 10:00 AM Which four if you don't mind?
Yellow bomber
yo-zuri mag darter in blue/black back
Superstrike needle black
white danny made by Gibbs Sometimes a salty danny comes for the trip.
All you need.:kewl:
EarnedStripes44 04-10-2008, 12:04 PM 1 plug.... for I switch to cut pogie as soon it thaws
LeCounts1099 04-10-2008, 02:04 PM I keep it to "only" two filled bags... but that's because I rotate inserts (Surfcaster large bags...) :smokin:
Slots set up for "day/ light"... "day/ heavy"... "night light"... & "night/ heavy"... (Light or heavy meaning conditions/ water/ gear...)
THEN I switch out certain plugs or colors depending upon the spot/ night/ conditions...
LeCounts1099 04-10-2008, 02:07 PM :btu:
RIROCKHOUND 04-10-2008, 02:17 PM Some of those look familiar :D
LeCounts1099 04-10-2008, 05:51 PM The two Gibbs Blue rewired & reswiveled Dannys you did (eyes too) are still in my heavy bag at all times B... right next to my BMs & TMs & Fixters! Thanks again-- you had a hand in some nice Bass on them in the 2 years since! :hihi:
Time & a place for each plug... esp. if they have swivels you can trust! :kewl:
I don't know how I would possibly manage my plug selection & spot- to- spot & time- to- time changes needed... without the insert system! (& then one big plug box/ organizer to draw from situationally, in the vehicle at all times!) Even my bucktail stash carried slides in & out of these inserts easily too... via that Surfcaster genius lexan card/ holder (gets 8- 10 bucks 1- 3 oz. for me, in one slot of my 10!) :)
Surfkid 04-10-2008, 06:20 PM I have 8 plug bags and use every plug in a different situation... they are all awsome
Stewie 04-10-2008, 06:32 PM I just bought a second, but the thought of having two scares me a bit. Maybe I'll load the new one with plugs I don't like and keep it under the seat for when the bluefish are thick.
I got a few...
This is how Nebe rolls...
The deep inlet bag-(lots of lead and heavy shads and some plugs
The shallow inlet bag(some lighter lead, darters, swimmers and metal lips
heavy to medium surf bag- needles needles and more needles and a few metal lips.
calm surf bag- soft plastics galore..
Slingah 04-10-2008, 06:37 PM don't need em'....I got no plugs :smash:
I guess I am an aberration ......but I only use one bag,a massive Hunter "man purse"
I cant see have a bag loaded days before the trip as I usually like to thinker with styles a plugs I will use depending ion water condition.Just metal lips ,pikes, surfsters, slope heads,Danny's,jointed pikes, juniors, eel skins or rattlers will only be picked after I take wind/wave/current/bait/light in consideration.I cant see how I could do this ahead of time.So no ,I am never a first guy to the beach.....:laugha:.....,but I get there eventually
Pete F. 04-10-2008, 07:36 PM Let's see
A 3 slot BW belt bag which sometimes is just right
A cheap 5 slot bag which is a good day bag for a walk on the beach
An aquaskinz medium that's self destructing
an army surplus belt bag that is probably my favorite.
Oh and a ex large BW that is too big.
Saltheart 04-10-2008, 08:42 PM 2 plug bags with about 20 in each and my jig bag that has all the rubber and lead and leader material etc.
At the height of my insanity I carried 5 gallon buckets of plugs in my vehicle
SAUERKRAUT 04-10-2008, 09:34 PM If I'm fishing with Numbskull or Flaptail, I don't need to carry a bag because they haul around so much of their homemade stuff. I just carry my eel bucket to suck up the fish their plugs leave behind.
Back Beach 04-11-2008, 07:04 AM I have one small skinz bag with three tubes. It holds three or four 7" plugs and a few sluggos. Even if I still plugged alot I can't believe one would possibly need more than that.
For the canal, I have a canvas bag that's got half a dozen storms stacked in it like flapjacks and a little hardware.
RIROCKHOUND 04-11-2008, 07:11 AM I got a few...
This is how Nebe rolls...

Well if thats how Nebe rolls, then we all should roll like that I suppose....

Ed M'man,
What is up?
I am fine getting primed for the new season. I have high expectations. Esp. when you take me to all your secret bassholds! :bl:
Now what does that Jersey Death Machine commet mean?? :hs:
One thing I was thinking about but neglected to say is that sometimes when heading out and feeling insecure (no idea what to use or what color) I will sometimes throw an extra AS 3-tray on the belt with "just in case" plugs & colors. I have been victimized to torturous levels when those around me where banging on a particular color and of course it was the color I did not carry that night.

Still tryin' to figure out the way the Dawg rolls........
i am a bait guy first and foremost, live/riggies eeeeeeeels and fresh chunks.
i am completely guilty of carrrying waaaay too much stuff, but i'd rather have
everything than have to trek (usually a mile or so, and often some serious rock hopping when on the NSHore) back to the vehicle for something that i forgot. i like the idea of narrowing down a bit, and becoming more SPOT specific with the load as many have said and Nebe relates so succinctly. The Gansaaaay allows one to do that, eh Glassman?
currently, i carry on my back a Timberland book bag that holds ~in the front pocket~ these "essentials": camera, leader wallet, disposable latex gloves, pliers, scales, tha COW rope, line and leader material, clippers, tape and cloth measures, eel potion, back-up hooks, hook sharpener, car keys, bug juice, power bars, sealed baby wipes, trash bags, and first aid...........the back compartment holds three pro-line planos and two filet knifes ~~one for cutting bait and the other for cleaning the belly-fillers. the planos are loaded with tins, sluggos, storms, sum blues missives, heavy conditions plugs, light conditions plugs, and the chunking back-up gear of weights, snaps, and fish finders.........the two side compartments hold bottled H2O. my Korkers get attached to the top loop of the bag, to free the hands, until i get to goat country. excessive? yes, but when i get to my perch(es) within a tide or two, i am want for nothing!!! :uhuh: :uhuh:
over one shoulder i throw a ten tube Precision Large surf bag whose residents vary according to the sitch, but almost always contain AH spooks and needles, coupla HABS needles, various Danny's by Tattoo and Gibbs, bombers, darters, sum pencils, Surf Asylums slo pokes, jigs with curly tails, and at least one or two BM Cowboy/Salty's Sherriff/The Mayor's Gotwood? Large/Big Ed Scrazy's Large layed flat on top. i can always add or subtract using the planos stash in the Timberland based on what the water says once i'm there, and then i carry only the surfbag to the offerings zones. the two best features of the Precision bag are the tins pockets behind the tubes and the space for a thin tackle box in front of the tubes that i throw my Surfhogs, Storms, and Sluggos into.
over the other shoulder i carry me eeeeeels in a Wally World soft cooler packed on ice/water, although i am seriously considering going with the ASkinz eel bag. this cooler has a zippered pocket in front for my eel rags, which is very convenient.
in the trunk of the fishing mobile i have a giganto bag filled with 5 or 6 tackle boxes full of my back-up to the back-ups, the very large CRAZY Gotwood?/et al Lahhhge lures, and booofeesh throwaways when they show up thick and toothy, or for when i target them at sum particular haunts around NPT.............in the front, on the passenger's floorboard, are my big supply of eeeeeels for the night (a dozen or two ~more if i have company or the whole weekend to fish), since i only take 3-5 to the surf depending on how long my spot window is. two black plastic buckets, one inside the other ~~with the top one having a drilled holes bottom to allow the slime to oooooze away from the snakes with a bag of ice on top to keep them chillaxed...............in the back seat, on the passenger's floorboard, i have my old lunch box from work filled with fresh pogies, wrapped in newspaper, on ice ~*and that's only because i haven't figured out how to rig a live well for my vehicle* but i AM working on it. then it would be live lining from the shore TIME ~~and there are several spots where i'd love to give that a shot!!
you know, DJ, sum "quick to get to" spots ~*still waiting for Plano to make the adult pogies flo-thru bait bucket, aka the Hummer of all bait buckets*. it shore would be nice to be able to refresh them in the surf and fish them LIVE from the rocks/shore/beach................
wasn't this thread about plug bags???
sorry DJ, went a LITTLE tangential on ya. man, i really need to carry less and believe in my focus more ~bait vs plugs; however my dilemma is this, i like to use bait in the dark of the night and switch to plugs thru the changing of the lights ~hence the full spectrum of BOTH. of course if i was wetsuitin' it, then i'd be forced to narrow my scope. still trying to figure out if less is more, or more is less??? :rotfl: :bl: :rotfl:

Just checking to see if you were reading these things:biglaugh::biglaugh:
I agree with the last comment 100%. Thats why I have that small 5 tube Surfcaster bag on my belt all the time, emergency backup.
I get the feeling that I am more concerned with profile than color, so my emergency stuff will take that into consideration. IE: different size darter or needle then or swimmer than would be my first goto.
DJ See you soon.
