Light polish compound then #OOOO steel wool then some kind of aluminum polish like Mothers or some other brand ,go to Bennys or Aubuchon Hardware , you'll pay more at the Marine stores ,if you want a mirror finish just keep polishing it.
If the chair is deeply pitted good luck the polish gets stuck in the pits
I drive for a living and shine my winter beaten aluminum on the KW to a mirror finish it takes a while but it will shine

Use bronze wool - it's safe for aluminum and anodizing - not steel wool. I use Woody wax with the bronze wool for bringing abused aluminum back to life.

i think you have to start with sandpaper for something that far gone. then wool, then compound, then polish.

There is a product called "Flitz" it is a paste. Works great on all types of metal. It will make your chair look like chrome!!!!!!! I believe you can find by going to www.Flitz.com????????

flitz is good polish.

completely disassemble it first.
I bet thats some kind of metal that used to be chromed.. and all the chrome peeled off.
you can bead blast the pieces and clear coat them... or sand them with 220 to 600 then 1200 or scuff pad then clear coat them. a small d/a with 1000 will give a nice somewhat shiney finish/ sand pattern... then clear coat it.
I bet if you ever do get a nice shine on that raw metal, it won't last long..
It probably wouldn't look 1/2 bad whith those pieces spray painted gold or black either.

You can have it re chromed or better yet power coated to the color of choice!

FWIW, I shined my t-top rails with bronze wool and the aluminum cleaner from WoodyWax then I've religiously applied WoodyWax polish every season. It shines like new.

There is an acid based product I used to use on aluminum truck wheels,I forget the name but it was pink in color and water like in consistency. Use a brush to apply it, let it foam up and wash it off. I would do it on the driveway, not on the lawn and NOT on the boat....It works instantly, no rubbing or anything just wear gloves....
good luck

Aluminum is Anodized not chromed... it should not peel but if it wears off you need to get it re clear-coated... Woodies wax also makes a sealer

When i ride with RJ i hold on to his T-TOP supports and they shine by the time i leave. This desert rat still has a strong grip.:bl:

Animal,I was thinking....you should try a professional powerwashing company that does big rigs or truck fleets...they should be in the yellow pages....the cleaner/acid takes off a microscopic layer of the aluminum...its as easy as brushin it on....we used it quite often and should be relatively easy to get....again good luck
