View Full Version : SKINNED ALIVE !!!!
Raven 04-17-2008, 10:58 PM i am so mad....hurt and devastated as to my Sh!t luck lately...
i cannot even comprehend the implications of it all...
car trouble's galore...financial troubles that you wouldn't believe
and now THIS on top of it all....
what happened is this.... my dog and i were out in the front yard
and i was moving my whole car load of plastic pots out of my car to the upper barn... then i threw the 6 inch rubber ring for my fantastic queensland blue healer named star, and she is a STAR in every way.
poor thing... i am soooo destroyed over this... and feel so stupid and guilty thst you cannot even imagine it...
i threw the ring where i normally never throw it, because the greenhouse materials are in the way of the regular retrieving path ok... and i didn't want her to get hurt running into the lumber.
i only threw it once but thats all it took... i heard a blood curdling yelp and she stayed yelping as i ran to see what happened and i thought she had broken a leg....at least....with that much pain.
well it was even worse... she ran full boar at around 40 mph into this friggan property marker stake and peeled the skin right off her chest like a banana...and as i approached her i saw something hanging down but wasn't registering what the hell it could be.
it was her skin...around 8 inches of it...a 2 inch wide strip...and she only weighs 34 pounds so for a dog her size thats allot... well then the blood started to flow and i was just freaking out and carried her into the house to wrap her up and to stop the bleeding as fast as i could. My van has a brake valve that leaks so i couldn't just jump in the car and drive her to a vet... so in panic mode i dialed 911 and they sent an officer and the dog officer to rescue us...
1 minute later the wife pulls in and we scrambled down the road
hoping to intercept the dog officer en route to a vet..and we had no idea where to even go. then we see the cruiser with the blues on..and flag him down...
he has us follow the dog officer to the nearest clinic two towns over and we get her bandaged up but then have to drive to the emergency animal hospital in Springfield because she's gonna need anesthesia
and a pro surgen to fix this wound right and someone whos up all night too.
now we have to drive all the way to Springfield and its another 40 minutes to get there...on the way we are stopped by the cops for driving too fast with the flashers on... and we explain hey emergency situation man... and he lets us go right away... thankyou SIR
fianlly we get to the hospital and it takes another 30 minutes or so to finally see the Doc who was more than excellent. they hit you up on the spot for 50% of the estimated cost which is over a grand...
yeah like us poor farmers have that kind of dough in our pocket at 930 at night....give me a friggan break...
so luckilly i was able to call my greatest brother and we are able to pull it off with an American express card for now...
the dog can be saved....it'll take time to heal her up but shes absolutely my best friend and my only child ..... kinda..
we cannot afford this disaster..plain and simple... it's a real bad situation... to say the least... i'm a wreck...never have i experienced something so unpleasant ,gory. and sickening.
it smelled just awful like cleaning out a duck after shooting it..
you hunters know what i mean...
shes in good hands but the poor dog has a long tough road ahead of her...thats for sure...
here's a picture of this idiotic metal stake she ran into...
i'll jack it out of there in the morning with my high lift jack and a chain... it was the boundary marker... instead of a wooden stake.
this is an awful thing to have happen.... is all i can say as
tears are welling up in my eyes just thinkin about it all....
gotta go now... dammit to hell

BigFish 04-18-2008, 04:54 AM Raven....sorry to hear about your fuzzy, four legged friend! I hope he heals quickly!:)
Raider Ronnie 04-18-2008, 05:14 AM Ouch, hope the dog heals quickly.
Get rid of the metal stake !
Best is to put down a granite lot marker flush at ground level.
MrHunters 04-18-2008, 06:04 AM while reading that i was putting myself in your shoes the entire time!! How devistating!! I would be in the same boat if something like that ever happened!
You did all the right things man, and at that point money is no object, believe me, I've spent close to 2 grand saving my dog from having to be put down from mange!!
Good luck, you pup will thank you in his own way, you will know.
Raven 04-18-2008, 06:23 AM that stake is sorta off my property in the north west corner out of sight and thus out of mind...on the other side of some big bushes.
for all i know and i'm checking out every detail it could belong to the neighbor...but i kinda doubt it..
i didn't install the stupid thing... but you better believe i'll be diggin that son of beotch up this morning...
thanks Ron and Larry... for your thoughts.. Star is a GIRL dog
i'm still rather traumatized this mornin .... to say the least...
you get sooo attached to your best little pal.... so it hurts me deep
She's so friggan fast shes like that coors train in the super bowl commercial....she's part dingo...the wild dog who has to chase down their food to eat.. and i've made her twice as fast with thousands of hours of athletic training...she's an athlete for real.
i have to wait to hear from the nice VET around 8 am to see how shes doing.... and we'll fetch her tonight... as it takes two people.
i was just editing a picture i took of her to make me feel a little better... because i feel really sad... and bummed out. i mean ...i've seen plenty of injuries to dogs in my life but this was the worst ...more like an autopsy in comparison... but i'm sure she'll pull thru because shes as tough as a diamond...
here she is...

vineyardblues 04-18-2008, 06:47 AM Wow, not sure what to say.
I am a huge dog fan, I just gave my German Shep a bath yesterday with the good weather.
Raven, I hope everything works out for you!

VB
Andy D 04-18-2008, 06:51 AM Raven I'll be praying for your pooch. There is nothing like the loyalty,
companionship and love that you get from a good dog.
People should take note.
Raven 04-18-2008, 07:01 AM just finished talkin to the Doc...and she's gonna make it...
thank GOD !!!
all that training has paid off in that, she had zero fatty tissue and the metal stake didn't damage her muscle tissue...too bad -even though shes very much bruised....
and she has drainage tubes for awhile to relieve the pressure..and she be on heavy pain killers for a week...or so..
the Doc said: she is the most physically in shape dog she's ever seen....so i guess that says something... and i told her..well thats because she's a martial artist and can turn on a dime because that's how i train all my dog's....and then she said , so thats how you did that....wow...! i was amazed at the condition she's in despite the injury ,she said. she had stared at her the whole night.
phew... thats a relief, now i can go immerse myself in my work and chill out in the sunshine... (that sounds funny)
time to go hang some bird houses, plant some seeds and plants ect.
do some diggin....and more diggin heh heh :)
.................................................. .................................................. .
thanks for letting me VENT here... as i'm all alone... way out in the country with no one to really to talk too...so posting helps me cope.
Raven 04-18-2008, 07:05 AM i am gonna go kick some metal survey stake BUTT :fury: :wall:
Duke41 04-18-2008, 07:21 AM wow,
Great work in saving your dog. I hope she will be alright. Geez what a weird thing to have happen.
Katie 04-18-2008, 07:22 AM glad to hear Star is okay! ;) :kewl:
fishbones 04-18-2008, 08:18 AM Raven, sorry you had to go through that. But, it's great news that she's going to be all right. Sounds like your quick response helped save her. Great work by you to get her to the vet so fast. Keep us updated on her progress.
MarshCappa 04-18-2008, 08:21 AM You have quite the dog there Raven. I'm glad she is doing OK. I hope she has a successful recovery.
PaulS 04-18-2008, 08:29 AM Glad she's on the road to recovery. I know the cost is a lot but compare it to the joy you get out of her.
eastendlu 04-18-2008, 08:49 AM Sorry to read this about your dog Craig and i'm glad to hear she is going to pull thru.
Raven 04-18-2008, 10:07 AM please do me and a friend or neighbor a favor
and tell them what happened to my dog if
you see :shocked:a metal pipe banged into the ground...
The Vet says this is a VERY common injury
i will be telling people of this horror show for the rest of
my life... trust me on that
=========================================
and BTW : i just spoke to a landscaper who was passing out fliers
for tree pruning and similar spring clean up work...
i told him i did my own work but arranged for him to drop off leaves and or grass clippings if it saved him time or money for my compost operation... and he was agreeable to that...
and he told me of a story that happened 5 years ago..
about a guy he heard of that stumbled backwards and fell on one of those grounding stakes made of soild copper i think, Right?
he told me the grounding stake passed right thru the back of his head and then popped out his forehead killing him instantly...
so it's a real serious situation that people
obviously take for granted
which is why i decided to post this story as well..
so keep your eye out
for those dammed things like a HAWK http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/ravenob1/ahawk.png
and thank you kindly for your nice words and sympathy
it goes a long way....to ease a troubled spirit :btu:
fishbones 04-18-2008, 10:37 AM Thanks for the warning, Raven. People don't always realize the dangers in and around their own homes. When I moved into my house a few years ago, I noticed a metal stake sticking up about 2 feet out of the ground near my pool. I tried pulling it out, digging it out, etc...... I couldn't budge it. I was worried because it was right next to the cement apron around the pool and I have young neices and nephews and at the time my son was an infant. I was worried that the kids or some of my drunk friends could slip and end up skewering themselves on the stake. I ended up digging a few feet down and cutting it off with a sawzall, then put a metal plate over it and filled in the dirt. I later found out that it was a huge drill bit for drilling through rocks that had been used when they put in the pool. It got stuck and they couldn't get it out. I can't believe the previous owner of the house had left it there for years and risked someone getting hurt.
Swimmer 04-18-2008, 10:55 AM Geez, I'm so sorry Raven. It'll get better.
FishermanTim 04-18-2008, 12:12 PM Raven, I commend you on you quick thinking and actions. More than enough people would freak out and go into complete shock in that kind of scenario.
Although the dog is considered "man's best friend", you are indeed your "dog'd best friend".
:kewl::kewl::kewl::kewl:
GonnaCatchABig1 04-18-2008, 12:54 PM yikes! what a horror story! but from what you said and that pic of her. i'm sure she will be just fine. as bad as it sounds it was, if she could talk.. once she recovers she'd probably tell her friends about it and when they replied "how awful!" she'd shoot back with "meh, it was merely a flesh wound" and give a sly smile. thats one tough lookin dog! even for a girl. (looks over shoulder to make sure theres no females around)
i wish the lil lady a speedy recovery.
MrHunters 04-18-2008, 12:55 PM btw, that is one ominous looking stake. ill be looking out for them from now on. thanks.
i get nervous when my dog is just retrieving a stick and he's holding it like a cigar running FULL OUT!. just one trip up and its an emergency room visit for sure.. OR WORSE!

ProfessorM 04-18-2008, 06:44 PM Jeez Craig sorry to hear. Hope all turns out alright. If this keeps up you are going to have to name your turf Murphy's Law Farm.
justplugit 04-18-2008, 07:16 PM Sorry to hear Rav, and while i would feel the same as you,
don't kick yourself as it was an accident and you really are not to blame.
Hooper 04-18-2008, 07:49 PM Hey Raven, I hope all turns out well for you and your little buddy. Reading your story made my stomach turn, he must have been in an incredible amount of pain. It sounds like everyone you ran into was ready to help you guys, I am sure that made things a little better. Hang in there brother.
teaser 04-18-2008, 08:14 PM Raven,
Sorry to hear about Star's dilema, it touched home with me. If she is in geat shape and you can swing it you should get the pet insurance for her, I bought it for my 2 dogs and it saves me tons of money. I have the best plan available for my 2 and its comes out to about $475.00 a year each, with my two I need it because there is always something needing to be done with them. It covers the cancer endorsement, 1 dental cleaning a year, 1 complete physical a year, it covers all their shots, and much more. You do have to pay the vet on the visit but it gets reimbursed back to you, I get 80% of the cost back from the insurance so that in itself is a big help. Major surgery is a little different, my female just had both her back knees replaced ... $8,000.00 for that but I got 4 of it back so they covered 50%.
Just a thought to toss out to ya.
Dogs have a very high tolerance for pain, she'll do well and don't beat yourself up about it, accidents happen. If you or anyone else reading this wants any more info on the insurance let me know, I got it after it cost me $32,000.00 for my last dog that never made it home again after his accident and I'm sure glad it's available for the pets.
Tight lines pal!

Raven,
I feel your pain , I'm a dog lover too !
Meet "Raider"
my 6 year old Boxer.
Raven 04-18-2008, 09:55 PM one ear up and one ear down...
must be the radar lol
yeah Dave i hear ya... even though it wasn't my fault
i still felt very responsible because i should have realized that the dam pipe
with the jagged edge was an accident waiting to happen .
it's just that i don't that spend much time in that particular area
and when you see a boundary stake the first thing you think of is
gotta leave that be...when in fact you don't have to at all.
North Kingston ,Rhode ISLAND
...that's around 62 miles from me
so the offer is awesome... but driving all that way with hardly any
chance to brake wouldn't be a good idea.but thanks! just the same.
==========================================
STAR is doing tremendously well...and she's like ok,
when we gonna chase some kitty cats or some squirrels dad? lol
they take a beating and keep on ticking... i'm truly AMAZED!
she got like 40 stitches and has some drainage tubes but other than
that she's cruising around without even a whimper. WOW !
when i saw her innards, i thought she wasn't gonna make it at all.
and at first i thought she had been impaled and not just skinned
like a chicken breast - so it was a real mind blower for me...
it seemed like her eyes were gonna roll back and then lights out at the time...
so it was really creepy... it's amazing how they put her back together
so well considering...the scope of the injury.
Teaser they have her on tramadol
and since that's what you take for a kidney stone ,
i know first hand thats some powerful stuff.
Adam_777 04-19-2008, 08:11 AM Hmmm 62 miles....What kind of vehicle and what is leaking ?Have you looked for the part locally ?
Raven 04-19-2008, 11:47 AM Hmmm 62 miles....What kind of vehicle and what is leaking ?Have you looked for the part locally ?
But then this latest fiasco with the dog getting hurt has exhausted
our cash on hand...so again it's having to be postponed
the car is a 1996 Dodge grand Caravan
and the part is a 4 way brake valve body...on the drivers side
right next to the gas tank

i just wish i had thought of it sooner
wahlie 04-20-2008, 12:59 AM Raven,
Here's to Star getting a full recovery. Hopefully she'll be running around wanting to play fetch soon. it's amazing at how much family pets affect us especially when they get hurt or aren't doing well. Best of luck.

LT. DAN 2 04-20-2008, 05:46 AM STARS is a Great looking dog who is fortunate to have an owner that always give 110%...
Hang in there..Good things come to Good People.
Raven 04-20-2008, 05:54 AM years ago....
i was out visiting a friend in NH - (i call it the shire) with my old dog "SADIE" of the same breed
and we were having a fantastic bonfire and a huge roast ...
having been shooting an old flint lock rifle earlier in the day...
and we had caught trout a stones throw away -
in a very famous river...
it was a really great party....
normally the old girl never left my side... but she was so full
she was kinda walkin it off a bit...and it was now pitch black...
since my dog had just finished eating to her heart's content all kinds of chicken and steak tips...a meal fit for a KING...she was way stuffed.
nearby, his road was real rural and seldom used out in front of the guys house in a country setting . My dog was black mostly and had wandered away from the group to smell a flattened animal skin in the middle of the road...for just a two minutes.... and a passerby (motorist) came along... there was one MAYBE - every hour and a half at best... didn't see her in time... and she got hit and instantly killed...
that was the most upsetting thing i ever experienced and i was
more than devastated from the loss...at the time..:agree:
~
IT IS SAID:
that you get much more closer and attached to your pets than people..
well except for your children of course ,and or your spouse.
~
but thank you Chris and to everyone on the board for your moral support... Star the wonder dog...has forgiven me... and is doing well ,,,although keeping her somewhat subdued is proving to be a challenge especially when she saw that damned cotton tail rabbit last night :lasso:
as we took a very slow and easy stroll down to close up the little green house and to let her go outside...on tier two... for a little while...
it's like trying to keep a stealth fighter jet on the runway during an alien invasion - LOL :btu:

when we were living in the mountains there were packs of coyotes
and at night you could hear a dozen of them in UNISON from the entrance to their den way up on the hill side...

well one night old sadie was out on patrol as usual
now you need a photo of her to comprehend her " wildness "

anyways...this one night...it was pitch black ok...you couldn't even see your hand if you held it out front your face...
i heard this loud commotion that sounded like the dog wrestling rumble of the century... lots of them.. i mean most of us have heard a dog fight in our lives...even blood curdling ones i'm sure...
well this was different it was a whole pack of coyotes trying to kill and eat my DINGO...and she was just the dog to handle the JOB of kicking all their asses....let me tell you.. for example: that dog was being trained for it starting on week 6 of her life as i constantly tapped her paws to the floor too while watching TV to increase her tactile senses in her feet...instead of being a clumsy puppy....
i was relentless...as everyone lost their dogs up there.
i did it for hours...and ever so softly until she became like this little Arnold Swazenager terminator dog lol and the martial arts training was from day 1... she was like a tank turret and could spin 360's same as STAR actually, but much bigger......60 LBS of MUSCLE of like a boa constrictor...conditioning...
OF course the incredibly intelligent and crafty coyotes didn't know this...heh heh heh :uhuh:
so i go running out there to save her LIFE in the middle of this huge Battle
with dust flying... couldn't see it ,but i was sure choking on it...
as i swung this large death staff over and over trying to make contact....with the the snarling bunch trying to
break up the fight...even though i couldn't see a thing...they were actually bumping into me..and using the darkness as cover...
i know this sounds ridiculous but it's the God's honest truth
they were moving around and i'd get real close to the massacre and swing the stick...shouting my lungs out trying to frighten them off of her , thinking...aloud...their killing her .......their killing her.... and your goin .....OH MY GOD NO....in your heart.
totally in PANIC mode....swearing up a storm- all pissed OFFF
lots of screaming... it was intense
and i finally grabbed her away from them scooping her up
and she was ALL covered in BLOOD ....i could feel the gooeyness /stickyness...of it all over her fur and ran to the bathtub to find out where to start doing emergency intensive care stuff...and i was rinsing her off ...trying to see all of her injuries...
it was gruesome like a horror flick....kinda bloody and i was covered in it too from carrying her...
and "then" .........all the blood just rinsed off down the drain....
like MAGIC .....and i couldn't even find a mark on her...
i stood back and just slowly looked at her in amazement as she panted slowly...all happy with herself for a job well done..
i was never so proud of that dog until that exact moment
she was a champion...a thoroughbred fighter... :btu:
sorry this latest fiasco with star made remember this story.

break up the fight...even though i couldn't see a thing...they were actually bumping into me..and using the darkness as cover...
i know this sounds ridiculous but it's the God's honest truth
they were moving around and i'd get real close to the massacre and swing the stick...shouting my lungs out trying to frighten them off of her , thinking...aloud...their killing her .......their killing her.... and your goin .....OH MY GOD NO....in your heart.
totally in PANIC mode....swearing up a storm- all pissed OFFF
lots of screaming... it was intense
and i finally grabbed her away from them scooping her up
and she was ALL covered in BLOOD ....i could feel the gooeyness /stickyness...of it all over her fur and ran to the bathtub to find out where to start doing emergency intensive care stuff...and i was rinsing her off ...trying to see all of her injuries...
it was gruesome like a horror flick....kinda bloody and i was covered in it too from carrying her...
and "then" .........all the blood just rinsed off down the drain....
like MAGIC .....and i couldn't even find a mark on her...
i stood back and just slowly looked at her in amazement as she panted slowly...all happy with herself for a job well done..
i was never so proud of that dog until that exact moment
she was a champion...a thoroughbred fighter... :btu:
sorry this latest fiasco with star made remember this story.

MrHunters 04-22-2008, 01:24 PM how's she doing?
outnumbered 04-22-2008, 02:06 PM Raven I just read your post and being the dog person I am can't Imagine how you must of felt. When my wife's cat knocked over my fishing pole on top of my lab, who jumped up and then set the treble hook firmly through her nose, then went trashing about with rod in tow, the smell from the blood was just as you described. I was devistated with just taking care of that at the time. I can't even imagine the feelings you must of had.
I know what you say about vets when my daughter was out running with her mutt up in Maine and the dog tore all the tendons in its knee I got the paniced call for the money before the doctor would operate. It was nice of your brother to be there when you needed him so that you could get Star the help she needed.
Best of wishes and I hope Star is up and running soon.
Raven 04-22-2008, 03:57 PM how's she doing?
she's a little more lively today than the last two having
finally given in....and has realized she's needing to rest.
the meds seem to be doing their Job
we're watching her very closely for any changes....
Raven 04-26-2008, 08:39 AM SADLY...the first operation to repair her chest failed...miserably
she had way to much drainage happening and she kinda knew it
she tried to intervene and we had to bring her back
to the ANIMAL HOSPITAL
.......for a second attempt to save her...
this time everything is looking much better
...but of course the expenses now are mind boggling...
and we haven't a clue as to how we'll survive..
we shall endeavor to persevere.
good news is:
the rebate checks are being mailed out on monday
and that'll help...slightly.
Raven 04-27-2008, 02:54 PM sorry for all this Rav.. hope your gal pulls thru fine, adn am sure she will...
find out if that is a registered property marker tho... found out they got fines for pulling them out...
should make so that they are all cement corner markers, not perfect, but waay safer than rusty steel pipe...

Karl ,
I just heard from my Neighbor who was out worshiping his lawn
and he inquired if i had removed the property marker stake and i explained that i had done so...with the intention of replacing it with something Safer...there, (i had put a plastic outdoor lamp in it's place temporarily) and that my dog had impaled herself on the stake
at a cost of $2000.00 dollars to us....and he informed me quite belligerently that he could have the surveyor come out and re-survey the property at a cost to me of $400.00 dollars..if i didn't put it back... and he couldn't have cared less about my dog getting hurt...which has now totally defined our relationship forever.
So i put it right back where it was...except i placed a long vertical stone next to it on my side...just to make him happy...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now the WAR begins... and i haven't even begun to fight..
i'm going to lawyer up and sue the town or the state or the united states whomever and get a new law passed that makes these very dangerous property marker stakes a thing of the past...
man i am pissed off now... how ridiculous can it get... :realmad::cens:
ProfessorM 04-27-2008, 04:39 PM Sounds like you neighbor is a real ass hole. Get yourself a bunch of pigs for your farm and put the pen right on the property line that will piss him off. What a douche bag
Raven 04-27-2008, 05:28 PM he had about as much compassion as a rattle snake... so be it. :bshake:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
i know that my days here are numbered...and that someday i'll be upgrading to a much bigger place... like 40 acres somewhere.

I bet your neighbor must be named Richard Head. Or, #^&#^&#^&#^& for short. I am glad the pooch is on the mend!:)
MrHunters 04-29-2008, 08:18 AM wow. people never cease to amaze me.
FishermanTim 04-29-2008, 09:54 AM I wonder if there could be any legal ramifications, based on who's responsible for that marker. The neighbors comments make it sound like he had theem installed. I would be interested in knowing if there were any recourse, such as a lawsuit for "reckless endangerment" for purposely leaving such a dangerous item sticking out of the ground.
You could always reply with a "So, this was YOUR fault. Let me discuss this with my attorney." and see how he feels about your removing the dangerous "item".
It's idiots like that that really tick me off.
No compassion that your pet was injured, or that they may be responsible in some way. They're only concerned with that stupid marker because they can't control their "land". What a turd.
I hope Star makes a complete recovery.

and then takes a dump 1 foot past the marker :humpty::humpty:

the "lets help out guys" thread for my current answer
to Piemma's comment on a pissing contest
...with the so-called neighbor...
