What is the best way to cut the off center lip slots consistently straight and square with the band saw? Do you guys make jigs for this? I have been eye balling it and every now and again I cut one that is slightly skewed and it pisses me off.:realmad:

I find that I have to go really slow so the blade doesn't twist. I use the fence to guide it and just take my time

You will find that all the different operations are done different ways by builders. Some like to leave on the sq ends to do holes and lips others like to do belly holes first and use them to do all the other machining. I prefer this method. I built a fixture that is fully adjustable to any size, length, dia. plug I make. It is way overdone but I know no other way:conf: , I am retarded, but you could build something similar out of a hard wood. I use a fence on the bandsaw if I am doing more than a few and slide the jig against it. Good luck and get used to getting pissed it is part of the process.

Man!!! that is a serious jig. Really nice. Your way out of my league. I will build more of a Rube Goldberg jig to do it. Thanks for the advice!

Like I said way over done. You get the idea though, that was the point. You can whip something up in a hard wood if you want to do it from the belly holes. Can do it with the sq. ends on the plug too. I like to do it from the belly holes because I like to hydro the plug first. If you are not concerned about that i would try the sq. ends method, fast and simple. Have fun

I cut mine with a coping saw or back saw, depending on the thickness of the lip, I have a pair of padded "V" blocks mounted in a carpenters vise that holds the plug while I cut it.... I have a PRIMITIVE fixture for cutting on the band saw, but prefer to do it by hand...

If youre making multiples of the same lure, you can also clamp a piece of scrap 2"x2" to the fence behind your bandsaw blade to function as a depth stop. :kewl:

have you tried leaving the squared ends on after turning the body?

You think Professor's jig is cool in the picture you should see it in person. Cousin you rule the jig designs.

I cooked up a cheap version of a jig with a pin in a wood block with a tail wedge on the band saw fence and it seems to be more accurate.

I don't have square ends, I am doing something a little different than your standard turned wood design.
