went out last night to a coupla spots where I have gotten nice fish within a few days of this time for the last several years. Got a few schoolies on a yozuri darter in spot a. Tide got too far up, went to another spot that is good at that stage. picked up a couple more schoolies at spot b on the darter. Tried redfins, rubba etc and couldn't get anymore hits. Tide had dropped enough to give spot a a quick visit again on the way home. Started with my darter that has taken most of my fish this spring. Nada. Switched to redfin, then yozuri crystal, dannies, then rubba. nada. Decided before leaving to try a salty 1 oz needle in olive in my bag for kicks. Now I was way up freshwater where I have never seen anyone use a needle and certainly not this time of year. First cast, lure hits the water swings about 10 yards with the current and it gets blasted and I land my first keeper of the year 36" and fat with herring (i assume). Try to take some pictures with my cell then release her. Next cast same location nail one about 32". Proceeded to land a couple more schoolies on it before donating it to the river gods on a bad snag that has eaten alot of my lures. Very cool and unexpected success.
