View Full Version : fsihing from shore in Bermuda
RIJIMMY 05-08-2008, 08:44 AM I may take a short notice trip to bermuda with my family. We'll be in the St.Georges area, I'd like to take a 2 piece rod and a few lures to toss around the docks. I'm assuming there would be fish around. Anyone ever do this?
RIROCKHOUND 05-08-2008, 08:52 AM Yup.
Didnt do much, but you walk to the inlet (DEEP, I had wished I brought storm shads and bucktails) from the cruise ship dock in Ste Georges, and some fishy beaches weren't far either.
Clammer 05-08-2008, 09:37 AM I walked the flats & fished /
saw fish ..some in schools ,.. zero
I saw fish feeding on growth off rocks & the locals were catching small fish with bait ..from the bridges ><><><
likwid 05-08-2008, 10:50 AM 1/0 hooks (circle)
spool of 20 or 30lb test
bread
sit next to the customs dock and catch bermuda chubs to your hearts content.

I just PM'ed Jim that.
they were chubs huh?
Saw the locals doing that.
I only had lures.
likwid 05-08-2008, 10:54 AM Yup.
Used to do that during Newport-Bermuda/Marion-Bermuda awards with some kids I basically grew up with (that live on the island, I used to spend every summer there) next to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton (there's a little park there).
Now I'm usually too drunk to find the time for it. ;)
Backside has tons of triggerfish and junk like that but they want leeeeetle things (small crab flies I hear are killer).
RIJIMMY 05-08-2008, 11:27 AM I'd be interested in any jack-like fish or cuda. Something that fights.I am goign to bring teh rod just for the hell of it. Mostly intersted in hanging out but may kill a few hrs tossing a few lures.
likwid 05-08-2008, 11:41 AM You'll be hard pressed to find much without having access to the outer reefs.
RIJIMMY 05-08-2008, 12:30 PM so you're saying I should bring my waders? :)
numbskull 05-08-2008, 01:09 PM I was there in Sept on my honeymoon 25 years ago and the shelf of the beach was crawling with bonefish. I think you could get them blind casting with a small phillips jig (bounce along the bottom with pauses) or fly rod. They were feeding right in the backwash as it spilled over the shelf. There is a flat out by the golf course that supposedly can be sight fished at low tide. I tried it but got the tide wrong. Long ride on a moped with a fishing rod. Saw a 1/2 day offshore charter unload 2 BIG yellowfins, a wahoo of about 70lbs, and a blue marlin of about 300 lbs. They traveled all of about 12 miles to get them. Swore that if I ever go back I'm taking a charter.

If you can find a way to walk the 10 someodd miles out sure!

teaser 05-08-2008, 11:42 PM Just got back 2 weeks ago and the fishing wasn't anything great, biggest catch from shore was a 9 pound jack.
Last time I was there was 15 years ago and after seeing how commercial the island went I wouldn't go back if someone paid me to go.
The island used to be extremely clean but now it looks like New York with the garbage on the streets and the 5 million cars going nowhere at 90 mph. Although St. Georges is still decent like it used to be but some of my friends there said that it won't be for long because they've moved all but 2 of the cruise ship lines that visit and most of the stores are having to close up because of lack of tourists, just another way for big business to grab up all the property by choking out the little guys so they can put up more high rises there to match Hamilton.
The beaches aren't pink sand anymore, taxi rides to anywhere (1 way) is $50.00 per head, the so-called big park in Hamilton is smaller than a city block now, and so many big buildings now that the islanders say the new national bird is the "crane" because everywhere you look that's all you see.
I'll stay with the Mexico side for vacations now and for fishing. I was very disappointed with the new Bermuda and won't go back.
bloocrab 05-27-2008, 12:01 PM I just got back from Bermuda, on one of those "cruise ships" mentioned. We ported at the Naval Dockyard,, opposite end of St. Georges'......
Pretty tight ride into the port, like stated....I never thought I'd see a Cruise ship have to inch it's way through some warning buoys trying to reach the port........gotta be fish in that channel when the big ship's aren't in motion .... ??? . ...
First time there and I thought it was a Beautiful place. Yeah, pretty commercial the closer you get to Hamilton. HorseShoe Bay was Awesome, sand still had some pink in it,,, very CLEAN beach w/showers soap/Corona Stand and Grill.,,, that was probably the highlight of the island for me. Water was AWESOME,,, nothing here to compare it to. I did see the resident fishermen working the bridges like Clamma said....catching small fish,///not sure they were chubs though. Mainly bottom feeders,, being caught with small crabs.
I didn't rent a taxi, I paid for the BUS day/pass. $12 and you can get on and off all day. I didn't think that was bad. I took a tour of the island and didn't have to take a $75.00 "excursion".
I was only there for about 8 hours so fishing was out of the question///~ Place was clean and people were friendly, maybe they prepared in advance for the Cruise ship ?? Or maybe cuz I spoke their language ??? ... :buds:
teaser 05-27-2008, 12:16 PM Did you get to check out the aquarium at all or the caves? Horseshoe Bay is definitely sweet but I think Elbow Beach has to be the best on the island and like you said showers, soap and everything else you need. If you had taken a right as you walked out to Horseshoe beach you would have found Elbow beach, they're right next door to each other. Glad you had a good time!

I was kinda curious about that too considering I'm there at least once a year.
Must be something from having half grown up there, they clean the place and spraypaint Church Bay pink again whenever I show up.
bloocrab 05-27-2008, 12:50 PM In regards to the "chubs"....???
While in Grand Turk, I took a charter out, and while speaking with the captain, he told me the day before...he was out spear-fishing for Chubs. ???.....I guess the juvenile chubs hang out near the bridges while the adults are in the reefs??? I had no idea what "chubs" were.....I thought chubs hung out with mummys ???....that's what I get for being a greenhorn I guess ~ ... ASSuming Grand Turk chubs are the same as Bermuda's chubs...
This captain won the 2007 Grand Turk Mahi Mahi Tourney. Nice guy, but too many people sharing the charter. We trolled BIG pluggage and pre-tied Ballywhores.....
Took my pops with me, (guy with the Bacardi hat on, not bad for 68 ;)).....These fish fight harder than I'd ever imagined.......:musc:
bloocrab 05-27-2008, 01:01 PM ....If you had taken a right as you walked out to Horseshoe beach you would have found Elbow beach, they're right next door to each other.....
Ok, yeah....I did see a path that forked to the right - - - - right after the Corona stand, that would have led to Elbow beach huh? I should have taken the walk.... Figured it was for lovers...:lm:
NO ....on the aquarium. Would it have been worth it ? I LOVE Aquariums!!! I did the Semi-Sub/Aquarium Tour while on St. Thomas. That was pretty cool. Wife was entertained too ~
...they clean the place and spraypaint Church Bay pink ...
:laughs::laughs:......yeah, you ain't kiddin' .......it's a very colorful island....and I'm not talking about the landscape. Most houses shared the same colors.....light blues, pinks, light tans, aquas.....made the place look extra perrty.....like they painted it for the Cruise ship. I was in AWE as we drove around. The Golf course was incredible too. The worlds smallest draw-bridge was hilarious too........:laughs:
I really can't say anything bad about it.........
likwid 05-27-2008, 01:13 PM The Golf course was incredible too.
If you're talking about the Belmont, many bad things have happened on that golf course. :hihi:
RIJIMMY 05-27-2008, 01:35 PM We had a great time, the far end of horeshoe beach had some amazing coves and rock pools. John Smith's Bay is another great beach. we had it to ourselves.
