Wondering what knots are best used for making eel leaders. Should I snell the hook then palomar to the barell swivel? I am using 40lb Vanish Fluoro and its very hardd to snell a hook with this stuff and was thinking of just tying a palomar. I know there are several different ways to snell a hook maybe Im doing it the hard way.

Thanks for your help!

I snell 40 or 50lb mono to hook, then palomar to swivel.

Saw no difference with 40lb floro vs 40lb mono, except harder to tie some knots with floro, and obviously the price. I honestly have less faith in the rig when floro is involved.

But then again I'm weird.

Is there another knot besides a palomar?:jester:

"Snell"? I just use that all-purpose fisherman's knot thingy. Wrap, wrap, wrap, wrap, wrap, wrap, thru the bunny hole, lick, pull. Is that what snelling is?

I use the palomar, easiest knot you could ever tie, and holds up really well too. I've never(knock on wood) had a palomar fail on me.

mono is so much cheaper and i have yet to see flouro out perform mono when I have used these two set-ups... i'll stick with mono any day.

sort of. The differnce is your doing the wrap wrap wrap thing around the shank of the hook.

50# and up, mono, for all my eeeeel snelled hooks.
palomar to the hvdty swivel, 36" to 48" for the leader length.

practice, practice, practice.......................

and you'll be tying them with yer eyes closed :jump1:

Grog's fishing knots index, on-line, is an excellent resource.

I like snells on hooks that I want to stand straight in line with the leader. IMO, I see no practical benefit of snelling a hook onto a 40-50# leader for eeling. I'm not against them, but most reasonably strong knots will work since the weak link is generally the running line to swivel connection. FWIW, I use orvis knots. They're quick, stong and only use about an inch of leader for every retie.
