View Full Version : Block Island
DaveS 10-28-2002, 05:22 PM Thinking about gettin over there this weekend, trouble is I dont know too many spots or the ferry schedule. I dont need to know secret spots or nuthin', just a few decent spots that aint too hard to locate. Also, do they flip out if ya sleep in your truck or are they leniant with visiting anglers? Ok spill your guts! :D
Scotch Bonnet 10-28-2002, 06:14 PM Dave, get the ferry schedule at www.blockislandferry.com. And this is a really good spot to fish.................... ;)
The longest month I ever spent on BI was the November night it blew northwest.
Sleeping in your truck will get you a big-ass fine, and the fact that you have posted your intent to do so will not help. (They have internet access on BI.)
Daignault's Striper Hot Spots details enough fishy locations to keep you busy for twenty trips.
JohnR 10-29-2002, 08:03 AM Dave - if you're DEFINITELY going, say so and let me talk to the misses about a day off this weekend and I'll go over with ya, I know a spot or 4 tooo. Only 1 is harder than Naps :kewl:
DaveS 10-29-2002, 01:28 PM I'm thinking about going Saturday John, coming back on sunday Afternoon. Gotta check the weather first, but if it looks good I'm there.
Krispy 10-29-2002, 02:14 PM Let me know if you need a caddy, was thinking of walking the course, too.
DaveS 10-29-2002, 05:00 PM Hmmm, getting interesting now.............. Can you say BI FLing? HEHEHEHEHE. Man, we should get a bunch to go over, could bring like maybe,3 vehicles, would save alot on the ferry that way. Who else is game for a BI trip?
JohnR 10-29-2002, 06:59 PM If I wiggle out a "Get out of Jail Card", I'm in... weather is looking kinda crappy at this point though - wind...
DaveS 10-29-2002, 08:48 PM It's an Island John, we can always goto the side with no wind lol.
JohnR 10-29-2002, 08:58 PM Hehehe - I realize that bubba, but it might be tight on one of the good spots with that wind :eek5:
So, who would be interested in putting a couple vehicles on the Island ??
Clammer 10-29-2002, 09:10 PM Right now I can make It , But you guys are hard core & better shape /////I,d probably just fish the Coast Guard channel /////
Letme know before the pager changes things////////////////
Cutty sounds good too
Steve K 10-30-2002, 09:28 AM Hello All,
I have not posted here in a long time. I fished BI the weekend of Oct 19th and it was dead. There was no bait anywhere but if I were to pick a weekend to try again, this would be it. Definitely bring your own eels because Twin Maples only had shoestrings.
Steve
bloocrab 10-30-2002, 10:54 AM If I wasn't "ON" this weekend.....I'd definately go!!!
WORK SUX!!
JohnR 10-31-2002, 10:46 AM OK Dave, I'm in, details please :D
Clammer?
Anyone else?
DaveS 10-31-2002, 12:20 PM I'm thinking we could go over Saturday AM John, just gotta get a reservation for that big boat if possible??? Anyways, I'll be in Weekapaug Friday night after 11:00 regardless of a BI trip or not. Hows the weather looking? Anybody else wanna take a boat ride?
Clammer 10-31-2002, 12:23 PM Windy
I might have a closing changed from fri to sat don,t know yet
Mr. Sandman 10-31-2002, 04:05 PM Halloween is always a great night on BI. The locals have a few costume parties that can get pretty wild. I was there fishing one year and some fellow crossed the street in a wet suit at 2:00am and he had a limb missing and a huge bite mark with lots of blood oozing out. I stopped the truck and this was his costume. (looked real as heck). Rebecca is always TP'ed and usually there is a 20-30 knot breeze.
My brother still calls a 30 knot gale ....a BlockIsland 10 to15. Many nights we had difficulty opening the door of the truck this time of year while the wind howled 30+ and at the exact time the weather man was broadcasting "a slight breeze this evening at 10-15." You get out and it is a friggin sandstorm on the beach. (I hear him off in the distance as he is leaning into the gale..."10 to 15 my ass")
With the weather forecast being what it is this weekend....it sounds like a another BI 10-15++.

I think you will find them this weekend on Block. Good luck guys. For what its worth, here is where I would try in a stiff north west blow. SW point may be blow-out to fish...work the bolder fields at old harbor point and under the cliffs at black rock(2 hours befor high) and snake hole (high) and also head to sandy point in the peak of the blow (any tide) and cast east north east. (be careful don't wade out but walk to the tip) For some easy fishin, try behind ballards all along the beach to the #^&#^&#^&#^&-shoot. This old outflow is also good if it is fishable and you like jetty style.
JohnR 10-31-2002, 08:33 PM Hey Sandman - thanks... I'm sending you a PM...
I have not fished it this late in the year, usually when everyone is complaining that there are no fish on the mainland in July :kewl:
OK, anyone else going? It will probably be windy, it will be F R E A K I N cold, but the places can be PHENOMINAL this time of year - lotsa big fish "CAN" be there...
DaveS - pm me your number and best time to call you...
DaveS 11-01-2002, 03:43 AM PM sent John. I think there are gonna be some monster bass around hehehehehe.
I'll be on the 11 am boat Saturday - if it sails. Blue Explorer.
Fish_Eye 11-01-2002, 08:26 AM You guys are my kind of anglers:
Never say die!
Don't let the weather stop you.
Go to the most difficult to get to spots.
Do it with fellow die-hard fishermen.
Plan for the worst and always hope for the best.
Fish at night when it's even more challenging.
YOU GUYS DESERVE LARGE! WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST!
It's funny how the harder you work the luckier you get! Good luck!
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE SOME FISH STORIES FOR THE BLUEBERRY SOCIAL -- FOR SURE!

Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 09:48 AM A few pics to wet your line....
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 09:50 AM I can't figure out how to do multiple pics...
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 09:51 AM pic3 (of 5)
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 09:53 AM pic 4 of 5
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 10:01 AM this is one of my all time favorites.....(I could not concieve how it was not listed in FD's Striper hotspots)
JohnR 11-01-2002, 12:10 PM The worst part is about half the pics are instantly recognizeable to me. I've only been over the once with plenty of daylight to check things out... But a few times at night ;)
DaveS 11-01-2002, 12:26 PM John, only ferry reservations available for Saturday is 7 AM, come back Sunday at 9:00 Am. Whadda ya think? Give me a ring.
Just got an update on island action from someone there. Despite perfect conditions the past two nights fishing remains very slow. No fish over 15 pounds and all nighters produce only single digit numbers. I've seen things change in a tide cycle. I'm going because I have money invested in a place to stay. But just wanted to save anyone thinking about going over some time and money.
JohnR 11-01-2002, 02:04 PM Hey Dennis, yer killing me, I mean, thanks for the heads-up, I mean, yer killin' me ;)
What to do, what to do....
DaveS 11-01-2002, 02:27 PM Me and John are BI bound! We might not come back, so there! :p
Anybody else wanna go over, we got the ferry reservation made for tomorrow @7 AM, come home Sunday@ 9am. I got room for 1 more in the truck.
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 02:33 PM That report doesn't sound that hot. The next 2 nights will not be perfect contiions. It could be a tough night or two. Weatherman is calling for NW 10-15, no kidding! (watch-out) Friday night is looking worse then sat night. If your only going for one night it is sort of a crap shoot anyway...you have to go when you can go.
Bring a few eels for when the wind is at your back.
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 02:39 PM Dave, your 2.5 hours away and your driving up for one night and then your driving back the next day? Your dedicated. Don't fall asleep at the wheel. I hope you catch a 50. Where are you CT, NY?
JohnR 11-01-2002, 02:48 PM Dave is actually in Jersey (I know, taking a &^#$($ Joisey guy to Block :smash:  :hs: :plasma: ) but opportunity presented itself.
I'm going to meet him over there as I'll walk on the 11am ferry with my gear for fishing Saturday night...
Dress warm, warm, warm, bring plenty O batteries for the light, gloves and hand warmers... Oh, & sandwhiches... The only thing worse than freezin' one's a$$ off stuck on an island is being hungry, freezin' one's a$$ off stuck on an island...
Any other takes :hihi:
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 02:58 PM Swing by "The Beachhead" and get your thermos filled with some Block Island chowda...(clear broth)..This is almost worth the trip in itself
JohnR 11-01-2002, 03:01 PM Whooops... Plans have unfortunately changed - maybe next weekend but a kink in the schedule just appeared... Was really psyched to be going too. Hey DZ, now yer gonna get some fish ;)
Anyone fishing South County the weekend ?
DaveS 11-01-2002, 04:13 PM I gotta go to an anniversary party tomorrow(in-laws  ) so the Block will have to wait till next weekend or perhaps Wednesday. I was loading the truck when the wife asked where I was goin. I told her, then unfortunatley she told me:smash: , so things changed really quickly. Sorry John, if I woulda snuck out about an hour sooner we'd a made it:D .
JohnR 11-01-2002, 04:36 PM Dave - I really abused my work schedule this week so IF I can go, it would need to be next weekend... I'll let you know as soon as I do...
Bloo & Clammer, change yer minds for next weekend :D ?
Clammer 11-01-2002, 06:13 PM OOOOOOOOKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK !!!!!!!!!

Dave, what were you gonna do call her from Connecticut!?
"Um, honey, I'm not gonna be home for a couple a days"
:whackin: :whackin: :whackin:
:bl:
DaveS 11-01-2002, 06:26 PM Actually I was gonna leave a note, hehehe. Usually I can go fishing whenever as long as we dont have nuthin' to do, this weekend was the exception so I guess I'll go fish here tonite.
Basstime 11-01-2002, 07:39 PM Can you spell "Divorce Lawyer"!? That's what I would be hearing from my other 1/2 if I tried that one. Sneak out for a few hours, ok, but an overnighter? Man that takes a set brass ones! Keep up the good work!
Mike P 11-01-2002, 08:07 PM Probably just as well--it's blowing a "BI" 10-15 NW right now here on the north shore of LI. Which translates into a steady 25 with higher gusts. 41 degrees according to the Weather Bug.
I know where I'd be on MV tonight, tho ;)
Mr. Sandman 11-01-2002, 08:26 PM "I know where I'd be on MV tonight, tho "
OK tell me. I have been beating a path all around the island and so far the most consistant fishing the last 2 weeks has been on chappy and the fish are all about 15-19 lbs and it is a slow pick at that.
If I had to guess what you are thinking I wouild say squibnocket...but that place (as good as it looks) has been dead slow for nearly 3 weeks. I have not seen one fish taken. Eariler in late sept early oct is was pretty hot for a while. It does look so good though you can't give up on it. The other night while my eel was swimming unmolested thru the bolder field I kept wondering...how can an eel last this long in october in this place?
If you have a hot spot to try...tell me, I will head there tonight. I am in my bathrobe now an it is blowin 28 mph and 38 deg at the moment but it will not take me long to get my long-johns on and slip into my waders. My truck is loaded for bear and ready to go.
I wish they would open great pond....that would draw them in.
The stories I heard of the fishing that occurs when that is open would curl your toes.
JohnR 11-06-2002, 09:13 AM Dave - no can do, will be in CT this weekend
