John, I thought it was a good read, specifically about Block - which is a beautiful isld to fish. I liked the ending when he was fishing Thanksgiving I think?

Another post by this guy, the nerve! Another good read more about the Ocean and Sword Fishing was the "Hungry Ocean." Written by Linda Greenlaw (ring a bell)......

I've read both Surfcaster's Quest and The Hungry Ocean. Both were excellent reads as was Greenlaw's latest, The Lobster Chronicles. I really hope she continues to write!

I'm currently reading The Moon Pulled Up an Acre of Bass which I find enjoyable but not as much as Surfcaster's Quest was. (It has nothing to do with my not being a fly fisherman.)

I have just orderd the following, to get me through the winter:

The Complete Book of Striped Bass Fishing
by Nick Karas

Striped Bass Fishing: Salt Water Strategies (Salt Water Sportsman)
by The Outdoor Editors of CPi

Striper: A Story of Fish and Man
by John N. Cole,

Bluefishing
by Henry Lyman

Has anyone read any of these?

Tight lines,
Rob

Thanks Ice

Looking forward to reading it... If it gets me going half as much as "Reading the water" I'll be happy. That book is now going for $150 in OK condition when you can find it...

Kara's Striped Bass is very interesting but it's far more a technical understanding than a soul soothing journey - but probably a bible on the fish itself...

Hungry Ocean was a great read - will need to check out the other.

John Hersey, Blues - fantastic read. Hardly covers a single method in any instructional method. Does a wonderfull job of captivating the psyche of a seasoned angler and a budding fisherman..

I picked up a used hard cover copy of Karas' book in June for $6. It took a few months to get through the first half, which is all about the biology. The second half is a much easier read.

I have Secrets of Surf fishing at night by Muller and Striper Surf by Daignault already on the Christmas List.

Also, I have a copy of Fishermans guide to atlantic baitfish and other food sources by Caolo. It's more for fly tying folks, but it does show species, sizes and areas of many baitfish.

I really enjoyed Surfcasters Quest. It is not the "how-to" aim like most bass books but more about the sprit and soul of the surfcaster. Everyone one of us has had a deep thought or two while fishing at 2:00am...It is hard not to when you are surround by the universe of stars and sounds of the sea. Great reading...wish it was a longer book. And Block Island...what could be better?

One book I want to get that I don't have is "reading the water, advertures in surf fishing on MV" by Post. I have not read it. Has anyone else read it?

MtnBrz1, I have Saltwater Sportsman : Striped bass strategies
It's a really good hardcover, but it covers basics like simple strategies, good live baits and plugs, trophy areas in every state, terminal tackle and more. If you know all of this you may not like it, but It is interesting and I like the 2 page story about the author fishing life as a child on.
Hope ya like it!

I don't know... I see used copies on Amazon for 150-190 and some of those are the paperback!

I buy a lot of books from the local Vineyard Haven bookstore..I will ask around. I have not really looked that hard.

Well I went to several books stores on the island this weekend looking for the Posts' book (reading the water). They all knew the book before I got the title out of my mouth. They have not had copies in the stores in 5 years and are still trying to get them.
The libraries had copies but they were stolen. (Who steals books from libraries? Dirt-bags)

Broke down and bought the used (signed 1st add.) for 150 bucks. Ouch. Wife will give it to me as an Xmas gift. I guess this makes me a collector of books now....

Flipped thru FD's new "eastern tides"...looks better then most of his others. Looked thru a few of this other older titles: this fellow should get an award for the author who re-cycles the same (old) photos.

Bought an interesting book on the history of Noman's Land. It is typed-written paperbacked with some kewl photos

I finished Surfcaster's Quest in about 2 days worth of train commute to work - definitely not a long read but still a very good read... I would probably have said great if not for the high perch he places himself upon regarding his fishing methods being the most pristine form of fishing, everyone else being second rate at best. He seems to have missed the boat on the universal joy extracted from many different forms of saltwater fishing...

He does do a fantastic job of translating the inner feelings of a surfcaster to the written word. Something I'll never be capable of. Rowan's communicating the experience allowed the true surfcaster over more general fishing methods is different and in a way nicer than Frank's "I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse than a brother in a boat" mentality. 'Course, both have their place ;)

I know what you mean about Rowan. I can't savor books like that either...I gulp them down in a night or two as well. (I also agree with you, the exposed psyche of the surfcaster overrides the purist issues. A lot of fly fishing books are like that and that is why I don't enjoy them as much...Fly fishing is not the *only* fishing method...they should try wire lining in the race. ) :p

My favorite outdoor writer is Frank Wollner , some of his early SWS articles about surfcasting were fantastic. I think I also have an old Gray's Sporting J. where he told about a surfcasting trip on Nantucket in Nov. I love to read that when I am hunkered down on BI when it is blowing 40 with a glass of Yukon Jack. I read my kids bedtime stories from Wollners' "My New England” now and then (with hot-cocoa).

I am looking forward to Posts' book...but I have to wait until we head north after Xmas to read it.

I noticed there's a lot of readers out there. John said it would be ok to put a URL up here, where there's a great variety of titles related to surf fishing, and the nice thing about asking for a book for Xmas is hopefully you get exactly what you asked for. I haven't bought thru it so I don't necesarily promote the URL site, but it gives a pretty expansive list of titles and a description of them. Of course some of the reviews I've seen posted on s-b.com exceed any book jacket or professional review. Keep posting, my list is at ten and growing.

Several Books/ Authors you might be interested in:

1) In Shore Fly Fishing by Lou Tabory
he also has another one on striped bass

2) Ed Mithchell has several books out on fly fishing

Although the books are on fly fishing, they cover reading the water in beaches, estuaries ect......

It could be a long winter, Burrrr.

Another on that is excellent is Sight Fishing fr Striped Bass, Alan Caolo not sure on the author last name spelling. He is living in Rhody.

For any of you deer hunters, I highly recommend all of the books by Greg Miller. I finshed two of his books this week, and have one more to go.

Just finished reading a good book:

Darwin's Bass (The Evolutionary Psychology Of Fishing Man explores how fishing ties together the great web of life)
by Paul G. Quinnett

Not specifically about fishing but still an enjoyable read.
