View Full Version : broken shifter jam
striperman36 06-08-2008, 09:12 AM in the throttle control there is a small black piece that holds the motor cable hosing in place so the cable inside can move freely.
Mine has some how broken into pieces. I thought the shifter was stiff last year and I took it apart this spring to lube the interior.
I did not notice this missing component until I tried to shift into gear,
Oops.
Can someone tell me if this piece the you can purchase somewhere?
The cable when disconnected from the shifter and the shifter lever on the engine seems to move smoothly.
I also made sure I lubed the shifter bar but I am unable to shift the motor manually into gear while I spin the prop. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Bill
freebie 06-08-2008, 09:59 AM first, what kind of motor? and yes you should be able to shift into gear manually, I would start by looking at the linkage on the motor, then probably going to involve pulling the lower, it should go in gear fairly easy, might be a good time to check the gear oil too

Changed the crank case oil last winter when she when to bed
no seal leakage
freebie 06-08-2008, 10:51 AM do you know how to disconnect the shift rod from the linkage?
striperman36 06-08-2008, 11:15 AM nope I never have dropped the lower unit myself. I can shift it into gear and rotate the flywheel, I can then disengage it and get it back into gear. The more I look at it the more I suspect the cable is not moving as easily as it should.
striperman36 06-08-2008, 02:58 PM Looks like I am going to need to replace the shifter cable, have to pull the old one first.
Wish I could put the boat inside the A/C!!!!
freebie 06-09-2008, 09:45 AM I hear that on the a/c, cable is an easy fix, and if you're gonna do one do both, the only thing that's a little tough is adjusting, make sure the throttle cable pulls on the linkage a little and the shift needs to be dead center, to chekc it in forward kick the prop the direction it should go in reverse and it should grab, do the opposite in reverse to check it, might take a little fine tuning
striperman36 06-09-2008, 03:49 PM I wasn't planning on boing both, though given the relative small cost of the cable, it may just be good maintainance, the cable is 9 years old.
I am interested in how 'easy' the shifter should move, it has been somewhat difficult to get the engine into gear, it seemed more difficult to get into reverse than forward, I am going to disconnect from the clutch shaft and try it that way.
I think I need to replace the grease fitting on the shaft also, some my mechanic of choice for last years service may not have lubed the shifter shaft as I cannot get lube in thru that fitting.
Thanks for the guidance,
Bill
keeperreaper 06-09-2008, 08:11 PM Bill I did the cables on the Steigercraft last year. If you need help let me know.
