I won't be able to fish with my dad this weekend, so I went out with him last night to celebrate his birthday/fathers day with him. We went to a spot that produced for us on Saturday with one keeper, and I was expecting it to be better last night based on the weather and tide. It was even better than I could have hoped. On the way out in the boat, we watched fish breaking all around us and assumed they were blues.

We got to the spot and were the only boat there, as usual. Before we could get our lines in the water, we were seeing big boils and splashes all around us. We tied on our plugs and started getting hits immediately. First, my dad hooked up and said that he had a big blue on. Then, I hooked up to what I thought must have been another blue. As I'm fighting my fish, my dad say's "it's a bass". So then I realize that I'm probably on with a bass too. I grabbed the net while keeping pressure on my fish and gave it my dad, who then lands an 18 lb striper one handed. Then I pulled mine in and it was a couple inches smaller.

We then made a couple of more casts and pulled in a couple more nice keepers. We had 4 fish in the high teens in the fish box less than 35 minutes from leaving the mooring. The action stayed hot until we left, and the whole time we were able to see big splashes and boils all around us. At times, as we were reeling fish in, we could see 6-7 other big bass following the hooked ones right up to the boat.

These weren't the biggest fish, but we were catching them on spinning tackle and plugs, which is my favorite way to fish. It was awesome to see these fish chasing the plugs and whacking them clear out of the water with their big tails. I even caught a really nice one on a plug that I made myself.

All in all, it was probably as much fun I have ever had fishing. It was a beautiful night and the action was nonstop with all nice, fat keeper size fish. But, the thing that made it even better was that I was with my dad who is my favorite and best fishing buddy. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate fathers Day early than with a night like last night.
