Hey Gang...

A gentleman in the town I work for gave me a bunch of true 3x3 clear white pine to try for my lures. Is this stuff alright or am I going to be wasting my time with this? I've got propionate to seal it but will it just be more of a hassle than it's worth?

I use it for Canal specials.

Gibbs, Pichney, and Musso all used pine as the primary wood for their plugs. It is also ideal for handcarved plugs. Use it with confidence, and if you decide you don't want it, please pm me

It is unusable, junk even >please foward all the wood to me. it will be disposed of properly. I would also like the address of the fine fellow whom gave you the pine:lasso::D

Seriously, the guy has a small saw mill at his house. I'll see if this is a regular thing for him or if he cut them special for me. I originally asked him about cedars and he suggested the pine.

I'ves used pine for some freshie plugs. Worked well. Seal it. Like numbskull said, many commercial plugs were made from pine. Wouldn't mind a few larger pieces to try out for striper sized stuff. Light, so you can add plenty of lead to it :btu:

Propianate is ok, I would recommend CPES first or minwax helmsman urethane satin second to seal. The urethane being thinned.

Why cpes, it allows for an excellant sealing with out much of a wieght gain so you are able to take advantage of the bouyant wood properties

I would use pine over cedar.

I'ved used all sorts of Pine to make plugs. White pine, yellow pine, and 2x4 (fir pine). They all work. For those starting out, I found it great to learn on. Cheap and accessible. I've never had one split. It will splinter a bit without really sharp tools, but keep things sharp and you get nice results.
