My local shop guy gave me a couple improved snaps to try and I have to say they are MUCH better then the breakaway. They are slightly heavier wire with the same basic design but have the starting bend in a better spot to put lures that have split rings on much easier. Also the plugs come off a lot easier as well due to a subtle bend in the set up. I have only fished with them one night and I like them. Don't need a light to change plugs...that is a plus. Also, they have a couple other cool styles. I forgot the name rolosomething tackle from new jersey I think but I will find out and post...so far these seem really nice. Have any of you used them? the snaps on the left in the photos are both breakaways the one on the right are the new ones (not made by breakaway, I think they are actually made in Germany and imported to NJ)

I like the ones that look like a streched out figure 8.

I like the little thingie bent in, if it was bent out, it could snag something. They're not THAT hard to use.

The breakaway may be more difficult to attach split rings but the de-revised snap looks like it will snag stuff.

I have been using the new ones and love them they work great so much easier to attach and remove lures.

I have both at the shop .
I will have them online when we reopen the website this weekend.

They are also cheaper than the breakaways.

I've been using the "old style" with no problems. But I will try the new ones for a comparison.

If the plug goes on easier--wouldn't the converse be true also--that it'll come off easier?

By going on easier its that you don't have as hard a time maneuvering the split ring around the bend on the older ones which was a pain in the arse specially if you have big fingers. The functualality of the new ones is just like the older ones.

I've been using the new style since last summer.Recommend them to everyone .Price is right and changing plugs can be done with one hand. They won't end up in the pile.

You can even put a big hooked bucktail on these something that was near impossible before, esp if the hook eye had paint on it. I had to use a little effort but nothing like the breakaway. Putting on a plug with a split ring is not longer a struggle. And they are stronger to boot. You can even clip it on your rod-eye frame.

As for plugs coming off easier yes they do. I see that as a plus....I can't see how it is possible for the plug to come off without holding the snap in one hand and the plug in the other. Perhaps if the line slipped to the the other position and the fish got leverage somehow...perhaps... but I still can't see that happening every easily. Beyond the ease of use, they don't deform as much under tension as the breakaways. After two nights with them these are superior to the breakaways. I'm convinced. I love these compared to breakaways.

The don't snag on anything either, at least I have not found that a problem. Try them out you will not be sorry.

New ones hands down. Easier to put plugs on, espically at night. The only thing is that after you've switched between many plugs, your thumb can start to feel it. But all in all they are much better.

I like that for jigs

I had breakaways come off on pencil poppers twice in a row, it happens. I think the popping action got the snap facing the other way and when the weight off the fish hitting it pulled, it took the plug right off the snap. That is all I can think of. It also happened to Gary2, he lost a real big fish because of one, but his tiger swimmers have thin wire so maybe that had something to do with that fish coming off. My situation came immediately after the hit, both times the fish swam off with my pencil :( after that I started using split rings on pencils or tied direct to the leader.

those might look fine for swimmers but I don't trust them even with a split ring, I don't like the long distance at the bottom there, that space is smaller on the breakaways. They should be fine and easier for jigs though.

This is great to hear ! I was fishing in the surf a couple nights ago, and wanted to use a different plug ( with a small split ring ) , and for some reason I just couldn't get it on with the breakaway clip. Between my fingers and the small clip, and trying to get the angle just right, I couldn't do it and switched to a different lure. For most plugs, the breakaway woks fine, but for some, it's a pain.
I will definitely give the new ones a try. I saw a couple posts where they are being sold- what is the actual brand called ? What sizes are available and recommended ?
