Hey what’s going on fellas im new to the world of striper fishing and have spent most my life fresh water fishing I was wondering if anyone could suggest a new setup for my I’ve been using a spinning combo but it’s a fairly cheap one that I bought so see if I would like salt water fishing. It turns out that I do and im not sure were I should go from here when it comes to a set up I do most of my fishing in tiverton ri and fall river ma in the taunton river. So many people have told me so many different things that im not sure what I should go with a guy that I work with keeps telling me to get a conventional set up and another tells me to get a better spinning combo so any help would be great and a list of brands and models would help a lot to thanks a lot to everyone that responds!!!!!!!!!:gorez:

NFR - welcome to S-B

8-9' Rod - 1088 Batson 1 piece custom rod is a great stick for less than an ounce to 3 which covers most of what you'd want to use. This is probably the best all around rod. Off the shelf, some better tackle shops will have Tica or Tsunami rods - 9' 2 piece

Start off with a good spinner - not familiar these days with the good entry spinning reels but I'd guess the Shimano Spheros

Line - stick with Big Game 20 Mono. You can always go to braid later.

Keep it simple :tooth:

What the boss just said and btw, the Spheros is an exceptionally barid friendly reel when you convert.

if you plan on mixing it up and, chunking and plugging, you might wanna beef it up to a 9 or 10ft with a rating some where from 2 to 6oz (or 4-8oz range if you plan on chunking alot more than pluggin.) only because throwing 2-6oz of weight (if not8 in some fast moving water) + bait (about another 1-3 ozs)doesn't work to well on rod rated to 3.

one of the lessons these guys taught me here, no matter how much i tried not to believe them (cause i cant afford rods) is that, one rod isn't goin to do everything. for instance, i am currently investigating into a rod specifically for pencil poppers.

think about what you will be using it for before making any decisions.
how much weight you plan on tossing is probably one of the most crucial things. (else the rod wont load properly and it will cut into yer casting distance. worst case end up with a broken rod.) what type of stuff you are throwing is a factor too on what kind of action you want. (i cant be of any help on that one cause i'm still trying to figure it out. but i know these guys can!) i think most guy here in general use mod/fast rods. (i could be wrong) i'm sure they have some softies in their collections for certain things though.

side note: our new fishing buddy, when asking about gear and stuff... at some point in the conversation looked at us and said "this is going to get really expensive isn't it? i can already tell.". i'm pretty sure we just laughed and replied.."just wait till winter." :hihi:

You didn't say what you are using now, and is it working for you, you know the saying, if it ain't broke.

For the Rod and Reel I would go with what JohnR said above.

I made the switch from fresh to salt awhile back and I personally fish just just spin reels.
However I used to fish with mono 20lb /25lb test but hated buying and relining the reel 2 sometimes 3 times a season. I made the switch to Braided line (Power Pro and Stren Super Braid)and ever since I have not gone back to using Mono except only as a Lead Line. Right now I have 50 lb braided line which is the equivelent of about 15lb Mono and doesn't have memory and because of the diameter and the no memory I cast a lot better and able to have more line on my reel. The best part is it last a good 2 seasons so even though it cost more its well worth it. For the lead I use Berkly Vanish which is a good mono. Why not try a cabo or boca Quatum 50 with a 9 foot St. Croix rod- Triumph series- and 20 pound test Ande backcountry mono. ADICE--- stay away from braided line no matter who tells you different. And, don't buy a shimano reel for the surf. They are not made for this type of fishing, even the more expensive ones. Believe me, I work at a tackle store and we have a reel repair dept. You would not believe the reels that come in for service and repair, I very rarely see Quatums. Also the aforementioned outfit won't break the bank. Finally, consider buying waders also if you want to surf fish correctly.Forget about conventional unless you have alot of money and patience.
