Going away with the family for a couple weeks and I needed a couple of new rods for the kids and one of their friends who is coming along! So I figure Ugly Sticks would be a good way to go. Kids can fish with a decent rod and if they get dropped or broken....no harm/no foul! I figured I would pay about $40.00 each! Well I got a couple of 8' Ugly Sticks and they were only $17.86 each!!!:bgi: Man can you beat that?? They are pretty nice rods too!:fishin:

methinks someone didn't know how to use the Pricing Gun....that's WAY cheap for an ugly stick....where'd you get them...I wouldn't mind picking up a couple at that price

WallyWorld! Just for the kids mind you! I would rather they not break a $100.00 stick! I still prefer an expensive custom for myself! I buy all my fishing gear from the fine Mom and Pop shops that are around......and we all know those fine shops quite well! Thats where I prefer to spend my hard earned money.....but for that price and for what I wanted them for.......I could not pass it up! They are for my youngest son who really does not care to fish much....just when we go down the Cape, and for their friend who I do not believe has fished at all yet....but he soon will! My oldest son, who loves to fish, has a nice Penn Spinfisher!:fishin:

I got a few for the boat, always hand them to vistors who don't have a clue how to cast!

Hey Larry - Paul W from NH. Been awhile since I logged into S-B.com. I am very fond of the larger saltwater Ugly Sticks - I have 2x 7' med spinning rods coupled with Penn 5500s that I use to cast plugs for blues and chunk, cast eels, or liveline for stripers when we do that. I have a 7' heavy spinning coupled with a Penn 6500 that is 2 for 2 on SBFTs!! :humpty: My brothers use 8' castings Uglies for groundfishing. I have my groundfish jigging Penn re-strung with 60lb Superbraid for jigging tuna this summer when I get to the Cape, and if the Penn Slammer its on blows up on one, I'll replace it with an Ugly too.

I don't like the feel of the lighter Uglies for light tackle saltwater, and most freshwater bassing, trout, etc - I think they lack a little sensitivity and are a bit heavy for their actions. But I do have a pair of 5'6" light spinning Uglies for the kids to use.

Have a great trip - I wont be out fishing much until our Cape vacation 8/9-22.

I always felt Ugly Stiks were under-rated. They're a VERY reliable product. They obviously don't have the feel of a custom jobba, but definately a BANG for the buck

Ugly sticks get a :btu: in my book.

I love ugly sticks... I use them for light tackle, plugging, chunking, live-lining, and sometimes surfcasting.... very strong rods and can take a beating.

I have my biggest surf caught bass on an ugly stick (10ft 2piece) and my father in law just caught a 6lb fluke on a 5' 6" ugly stick with 8lb fireline. I can't really complain about them, however I don't use them for the surf anymore.

I buy higher end rods now but ugly sticks still hang in the shed and get used. The only ugly stick failure I have had was a car door...Arg.

LUUUUV the uglies for ALL sweet water applications!!

You can ride ugly stiks down the stairs. A little heavy for old shoulders, but great rods. And the price you got..:kewl:..

Yeah - I got my son a six-foot Ugly Stick at Wally-World last week - it was cheaper than what my wholesaler had it for.

one of my first rods was an uglystick that TheSpecialist gave to me back in 2004 i'm guessing. great rod, still have it. :kewl: in my book!

I have fresh and salt Ugly Stiks for my daughters. The salt are 6', on with a penn 4500ss and the other with a 450ssg. The fresh came with shakespear reels that are good enough as I don't do a lot if fresh stuff.....mostly just to kick around a pond if I'm on the cape and need some quick entertainement for them....

Of course because they belong to my daughters they both sport pink line....lmao!!!

Plus I've sent in several times and got those tackle bags they sometimes offer. Those things are great!!!!!

I have a coupe of 7' and love them!! I lost one in my move last fall :mad:
But I just went to Wally world and bought the same rod I bought 15 years ago for $50 now for $29!:bounce:

Had mine about 3 years. Had some problems with the plastic rings coming out of the guides, but aside from that, it's a pretty good rod; casts well,
has good response with almost any size fish.

I bought a cheap ugly stick set-up at wally world for freshwater when I was camping in NY like 4 years ago, the thing is awesome, I've caught a lot of largemouths and even some holdover keeper sized striper on it, I've abused the hell out of it too and it's held up great, awesome rod, maybe I should get another one!

I've got a 13 ft uglystik. Its the equivalent of the F250 of my arsenal.

same here!...Great for anyone on the boat that doesn't know what they are doing. I usually avoid bringing these friends along anyway but sometimes I feel like being the nice guy. :musc: they also love sluggos

ugly sticks are the only way to go with kids that dont fish often or younger kids and adults that have never or seldom fish . My daughters each have an 8 footer for shore fishing .

So after reading this thread I run to my local Wallyworld to pick up a few ugly sticks. Guess what? The prices tags had been scrapped of all of them and no replacement price tags had been put on any of them. I bring the 7' medium-heavy action over to the bar code reader and it comes up $40.00; the 9'6" surf rod is around $80.00. It appears the mistake has been fixed. Still good rods for the money.

I bought a white 7' one piece conventional that I put an Abu 5500 on. Nice boat rod for the 29.99 I got it for. Could use a little mre backbone but for the price it does what it needs to do!

Have been using the sticks 4-ever and they are the best rods,with no complaints.If any of you high end rod users want to compare and show me the difference I'm there. I will even take you out on my boat to compare the difference.:cheers2:

A good golfer is a good golfer regardless of the clubs and same with fishing. With that said there are some sweet custom clubs and rods out there that I feel can make a big difference in the right hands. Oh by the way I'm a 14 handicap with Ping clones and I fish a 8' Ugly Stick with Penn spinning reel and could use all the help I can get with it. Still learning all the different types of retrieves, rigs, etc. Someday I'll invest the dough when I have it. Until then I enjoy my time on the course or the water and appreciate what I have.

So far this week the kids are putting an awful bend in the ugly sticks! They are hammering 8-10 pound blues on the ugly sticks on BigFish topwater ammo and they are having a ball! My youngest weighed in a 10 pounder....he was thrilled....so was Dad! Their friend Kevin, who is along for the trip, caught his first saltwater fins ever and hooked up with his first bluefish....a nine pounder, and several more!! He is hooked now! Best 40.00 bucks I have spent all season!

Well for one thing they are a lot heavier than the Custom Graphite rods.

How the heck do you have time to fish and golf? Do you know some secret I don't know about? Before I got married and had a child, I did each a couple of times a week. When I got married, I only had the time to do each about once a week. Then I got tired of spending 5 hours on the course playing behind people who were spending 10 minutes in the woods looking for a top flite blemish ball, so I decided to get back to fishing as my obsession. Now, I fish as much as I can (which isn't nearly enough) and golf 2 -3 times a year.

Back to the topic at hand. I have a 7' Ugly Stick paired with a 4500ss that I use for schoolies early and late in the year. I like the rod and if I ever need to, I'll replace it with the same thing. I wouldn't spend big bucks on a rod that only gets used a few times a year.

I like them just fine. In these days of 4 bucks a gallon gas and the way the economy is going, to me, they make good sense. I use a 7 footer paired with a Penn 704z. It might be little heavier than my old Daiwa that I broke earlier this year, but I think it works a plug better.
