View Full Version : You have 30 seconds to grab a plug....

So I'm fishing the Vineyard on the light, not the tide, as recommended, and sure enough, at the prescribed time the birds go nuts all around me. The fish follow and now I'm up to my chest with tails flapping everywhere (the one two feet from me gave me a slight laundry problem). I've got a white jumping minnow on, no interest. Throw a needle, nothing. 10 other guys are frantically changing plugs and flys while the frenzy goes on. I quick change to a squid sluggo, catch a nice fish and then it's over. What's your failsafe, last ditch, middle-of-a-frenzy plug?

Always a topwater plug for me....pencil, spook.......metal if you want to try getting down under for the bigger ones but I like a nice topwater plug in a blitz!!:btu:

in the midst of mayhem, if fish are on top in the daylight....always a throw a yellow BigFish pencil...middle size, then adjust size from there
If not hitting topwater...I'll try a Kastmaster...

wouldn't have thought of a sluggo. maybe because they always end up at the bottom of my bag. I would go with metal to get to the bottom.

my decision making is always horrible in these situations.

Top water for sure. In a situation like that, I've done well with a littleneck or a pencil.

In this case, I'd reach for a squid slug-go. Because some guy just caught a respectable fish on it, and I'd be an fool not to.

Its not about the plug so much as the bait. The sooner you see what the fish are on, the sooner you'll know what to reach for. I'm guessing the fish that were around you were on small sand eels or herring. An eel impression like a small olive bomber, deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& #1 long, or herring colored small swimmer might have done the trick. My #1 rule in fishing is match the hatch. My #2 rule in fishing is there are no rules in fishing.

During an intense frenzy or blitz, try tying on a Pogy Snagger, .......when the fish are in that thick, your chances of snagging one of them is pretty good. Not to mention, you'll probably snag them somewhere other than the head,,,and OH, what a different kind of fight that will be. :err:

I have found that a Surf Howdy excels in these circumstances. Hell even the birds can't seem to resist it. :hihi:

Bucktail. I like a single hook during a blitz. If I want to have some fun and watch the fish crash on top i'd put on a SS littleneck popper, yellow that is.

Metal. I can outfish most surface plugs with tin almost all the time.

Always start with a pencil, I love those things ... but if that doesn't produce, will work my way down into the water column ... metal and then jigs ... but the explosion on a pencil is always spectacular and worth the price of admission.
