I just heard(confirmed) a 74 pound striper was boated today at B.I.. Fish was weighed at Pt. Judith. Angler unknown at this point.

Yeah, Flap, there was an 86 pounder caught - and the operative phrase here is 'supposedly caught' - on the Island in 1887. The fisherman was a Providence attorney and politician named Francis W. Miner who summered on the Island at the Ocean View Hotel near Old Harbor. There was a bass stand right out back although a number of them were erected shortly afterwards.

If memory serves (and it doesn't very well lately, it seems :hs:), the stand Miner caught the bass from was built by Henry Steers, nephew of James R Steers, the 87 year old guy pictured in my avatar. The stands and 2 of the 3 clubhouses are gone now, over the edge at Mohegan Bluffs. Miner's house is still there and now called Bit-O-Heaven and the locals refer to the area as Miner's Point.

As it turns out, the Steers in my avatar (which I didn't know when I used it in the logo for The Angler's Art) is the great-great-grandfather of my best friend who was also my best man. (Boy, is that weird - but then he actually does look like him in profile) Can't say fishing is genetically influenced though - my best bud isn't much of an angler, he couldn't catch crabs in a Cambodian cathouse.

The Steers brothers were well known as naval architects and ship-builders. They designed and built the yacht America and sailed it to victory in 1851 to start the America's Cup.

Anyway, Miner's fish was never - to my knowledge - verified.

However, there was a photographer on the Island at that time who took pictures of the notable catches of the day and I have a recent lead on one of his descendents - who has his original photos.

I heard from several sources that another high 70 was taken from Orient Point. I think your best bet for a fish like that is fish the race or gut with live scup or bunker deep.

Sandman...I can second the rumor of an over seventy pound bass caught on Orient Point...I receved a call some time ago telling me the fish was caught and during the call I was told no one would here who or where until the fall...things theat make you go hmmmmmm

I spoke to Ron at Breachway Bait and Tackle today when I was driving in from fishing. He saw the fish in person and claimed it was 55" long and incredibly thick. Congrats, Peter!

Seeing this guy is a vetern angler you would think he would have a larger set up fishing eels? Not to question it, Just amazing to reel a fish like that in on a medium sized rod.

You really can't tell a hell of a lot about how ballsy a rod is when the guy's holding it up straight.

The reel looks to be a Penn Slammer 560 in the pictures I saw. You can get plenty of 50# braid on one of them. Tony Stetzko used a Penn 650, which isn't much bigger, for his 73. And he wasn't fishing 50# test line, either. McReynolds used a Penn 710 which is about the same size as a 560 Slammer.

Are there as many fish being kept, or sold today as there where before the last collapse? It seems as though there is alot more awareness and preventitive measures being taken now than there where then.
