View Full Version : sanding?
tlapinski 11-11-2002, 10:34 AM ok. i have some prototypes that chris and i turned out this weekend. we sealed them with boiled linseed oil, primered them, and attempted a few paintings for fun before the first test swimmimg run. the problem we ran into was that after the primer coat was applied, the blanks looked "hairy" and the grain of the wood stood out like a soar thumb! is this a product of the wood used (hardwood dowels), or is it a result of the sanding? thanks.
Christian 11-11-2002, 11:38 AM i had the same problem but i use square spindles to start my lures. the solution was to find spindles with the tightest grain. the tighter the grain the smoother the wood was after sanding. i tried dowles once but i didnt like the way they turned. a sandable primer also helps. after it dries give it a light sand with polishing sandpaper. hope this helps.:)
TheSpecialist 11-11-2002, 12:56 PM Toby you should give them a light sanding between coats. Also if you are gonna epoxy, or envirotex, then I would'nt worry that stuff will give you a smooth as glass finish.
JHABS 11-11-2002, 02:38 PM TOBY ONE, BEING Square or Round stock has nothing to do with it , before the dowels were made they were square. Use a little elbow grease and sand boy sand. :D
tlapinski 11-11-2002, 02:40 PM what grit should i finish it with? i was using 150.

wahlie 11-11-2002, 04:41 PM so would you guys use a finer grit sandpaper right off the bat or would you first sand with a more coarse grit and then eventually come down to a superfine paper?
JHABS 11-11-2002, 06:06 PM TOBY ONE, My PAPER of choice is CHARMIN (it's oh so SMOOTH)
