View Full Version : Cod Trip??
JohnR 11-11-2002, 04:10 PM Whaddya say? Any interest in an organized Cod Trip this fall?
Last year, we got "weathered out" with waves taller than Slip holding a ditch rod straight up...
Should we give it another shot this year?
Suggestions for where and what boat? Other than the Andy Lynn :smash:
How about it Capesams - got room for 20 on your boat :p
tlapinski 11-11-2002, 04:26 PM i would be interested as long as i can work it into my work/rodbuilding/plugbuilding schedule. :rollem:
mrmacey 11-11-2002, 04:33 PM would like to meet some of ya!!! let me know when!!!
JohnR 11-11-2002, 04:48 PM If we get enough interested we'll put one together... I already have one other person lined up for a cod trip
tlapinski 11-11-2002, 04:52 PM would we be looking to do a small private charter, or a big party boat?
DRUMCORPFAN 11-11-2002, 04:53 PM i will go, i'm sure kippy would go too:D
JohnR 11-11-2002, 04:54 PM Probably party boats 20-30 people or so...
wahlie 11-11-2002, 04:59 PM I'll bring the chum slick:yak:
fishweewee 11-11-2002, 05:45 PM I'd be interested.
redcrbbr 11-11-2002, 05:52 PM john, would this be after the holidays like last year? i'm in. think we could try and do it on a sunday??
tlapinski 11-11-2002, 06:21 PM sundays are best for me.
Striper1 11-11-2002, 06:42 PM John R.
Swede and I went last weekend :D
This was an inshore trip on the walsh boat out of Lynn.
best cod on the boat was 36 pounds !!
I got two around 15 pounds:D
The walsh boat is running till the end of the month.
I hope to get back out there soon.

Got Stripers 11-12-2002, 08:15 AM I'm in.
Duke41 11-12-2002, 08:32 AM YES, LET'S DO IT
JohnR 11-12-2002, 09:25 AM Cool... Not sure yet if before or after the holidays so we'll see how that pans out.
Last year we tried to keep the trip around Plymouth because it was central to the guys in Mass and those from Rhody and Foxwoods. Any suggestions on a boat? Other than the Andy Lynn?
Thanks
shore manic 11-12-2002, 10:37 AM john, what happened on the andy lynn that turned you off? ya can pm me if you don't want to talk here.
JohnR 11-12-2002, 10:53 AM It's not so much my experience that put me off but the experiences of numerous people that I know. Some guys from work, others friends I fish with, and some relatives have all been underwhelmed by their experiences on the Andy Lynn... We actually tried to use them last year too but the weather was too bad...
Canalratt1 11-12-2002, 11:14 AM I'm in!
Hmmm..
I could be easily convinced to go. OUCH !! OK, OK I'll go.
I have gone out from Plymouth before and I agree to
avoid the AL. (I have also heard stories)
We went on a smaller boat which held about 20-25 people.
I am trying my best to remember her name....Capt. Brady I think.
It is right there next to the others. Boat name is Anne Marie (MAYBE).
Anyway,
The captain is great, but fishing success depends on where he would take us.
Canalratt1 11-12-2002, 01:34 PM Depends on who captains the boat. They seem to take you on a long boat ride when you can stay inshore and get more fishing time. I have heard good things about Walshes but have never been on their boat. The Yankee Fleet is good also but you will be fishing with alot of anglers as they crowd it. I like the Andy Lynn's drift fishing trip because you fish one side of the boat and DO NOT anchor. I have had good luck but its a long ride out with not alot of fishing time in a fairly small boat but we could charter the whole boat ourselves. Many of the boats will stop running soon and the weekend after Thanksgiving seems to be when many shut down. AL runs all winter.
mrmacey 11-12-2002, 04:07 PM i rented capt johns big party boat for my bachelor bachelorett party needed 40 pepole at 30.00 ahead to pay 1200.00 for boat got all my tickets sold but only18 pepole showed for it had that whole boat to our selves lot of cod that day and extra big wolf fish it was a fun time for all who showed never been on party boat where i wasnt crowded till that day!!!most of my boating was on capt johns and thats what swayed me too get my own now i go out with 2 maybe 3 so as nobodys crowded and love it!!!
fishsmith 11-12-2002, 09:27 PM Sounds like a good idea and the inshore catch has been good from the reports I've heard.
Striper1 11-13-2002, 05:54 AM Wlash boat....
I know it's a hike for some folks but..
last time out we where fishing 1/2 hour from the dock.
The bad thing is they only run till the end of the month.
I have to get out there one more time.

Billyboy 11-13-2002, 03:16 PM I'd be up for it, but could we do it after hunting season?
fireguy 11-14-2002, 01:57 PM Capt John Boats were catching haddock as well as cod on Stellwagon Bank. Thats about a 45 to 55 minute ride for them out of Plymouth Harbor. They provide bait and will rent tackle.

Christian 11-14-2002, 05:19 PM can i come? i like the sound of walsh's in reports lately. i also had a bad experience on andy lynn, skunked. my favorite is captains lady, plum island, but thats a summer thing.
bloocrab 11-14-2002, 07:30 PM ..didn't the boat we took out last year ..... get STUCK!!!
...either before or after we were on it. Something about the engine die-ing while in those swells...:smash:
hey Slip.....hey Slip.......you cooking breakfast??
Canalratt1 11-15-2002, 02:08 PM Bloo I was on it the next day. It took about three hours to leave the dock, it was overheating. After the problem was fixed we went out. I had 6 keepers (3 cod, 3 haddock) but many got the skunk and weren't happy. Myself I don't like the Capt. John boats would rather head north.
shore manic 11-15-2002, 02:52 PM i'm in! where? when? just need the details so i can make plans. can't drive so i have to figure out how i can get there::smash:
JohnR 11-15-2002, 02:56 PM Let's figure out when (before or after Xmas) and what boat. Anyone know what boats we can rent? If we get an entire boat, we're in good shape...
BasicPatrick 11-15-2002, 06:25 PM John,
I was a mate for a few seasons a long time ago and have been a pretty serious Head Boat regular for over 15 years. As you know I have chartered a few boats in my years and though I would reccommend any of the following boats, I will list them in my order of preference.
1...Helen H out of Hyannis...More money, Big Fish, High Tech, Cutting Edge,
2...Yankee Fleet out of Gloucester...Overall, the best over many years
3...Captain Johns out of Plymouth...1st class for inshore/Stellwagon Bank Trips trips, easy to deal with
4...Francis Fleet in Galillee...Rates righ there with Yankee Fleet, only 4th because of the log drive from my house
There are many other top notch boats around, these are just my favorite that run in winter
I'm in whenever as long as I do not have a more importan commitment whn you set the date.
saltydog 11-15-2002, 07:30 PM JOHN, WOW:smash: COD ON A FLY im in e-mail me when your ready to to. Ill put the time aside an be ready.

BEETLE 11-16-2002, 08:37 PM I'm in - provided it fits in between my erratic work schedule as well. :rtfm:

Frank C.
redcrbbr 11-19-2002, 07:24 PM after the holidays would be alot easier for me, but a saltwater turkey for christmas would be nice. who said it has to be easy. again i could only make it on a sunday.
fireguy 11-20-2002, 07:26 PM Passed-up a day at the ditch to go Cod fishing. Plenty of fish along an area known as "Stone Ledge" about 8 miles east of Scituate, MA. We arrived early and caught cod and haddock to 15 lbs. We stayed there until Capt John boats showed up. Went east a few miles and started again. Fished until 1400. The three of us each brought home our 10 fish limit.
We did see three diffferent schools of "footballs" come sweeping by.
Better check the new regs, from what I heard last
night at our fishing club meeting, the limit is now 5 fish. (total of cod and/or haddock).
I think they said it went into affect in late Sept. or early Oct.
Kind of a bummer when the cod fishing gets good, we can't take as many.
CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THIS NEW LIMIT ????
Fish_n_Dive 11-21-2002, 09:28 AM Hey, wouldn't mind comming if someone could email me the details
JohnR 11-21-2002, 09:33 AM Van - those regs are correct...
OK, let's try this again - boats near Plymouth ;) : ??????? While I would love to go north of Bahstin, many are coming from Rhody & CT which makes for an even tougher haul for a 6am sail...
Thanks :D
John:
Should we do a poll thingy??
I vote for Cpt. John, problem is schedule.....

John.......just choose a time and place!! HA!HA!...seroiusly...I bet many are waiting to find out...to determine whether they can make it or not......
.......if you make it, They will come......;)
fishsmith 11-21-2002, 01:21 PM I sent an e-mail to Capt. John asking what the december/january schedule is (their website didn't say), and if there is a discount for 20 or more people. They do have a deal where you get one free person for every 5 paying.
I'll post when they reply.

i'll take the free spot! :D
fishsmith 11-21-2002, 03:30 PM Capt John's was quick to respond, here's what they said:
Hello-Our last trip is on Dec 1st from 7am-3pm.We will start up again in
April Thank you
They didn't bite on the discount, but there website does have $1 coupons.
The Pats play on Turkey day, so Sunday December 1st is a good for me.
I'm also all for a biggest fish pool, say $10 a head????
JohnR 11-21-2002, 03:43 PM Fishsmith - sounds very, very interesting. I'll need to check with thebetterhalf and make sure that's not a previously scheduled event... but very interesting...
Who would be interested in that?
Spare Spool 11-21-2002, 03:50 PM I would love to go on a Cod trip! Sounds like fun, although December 1st is probably a bad day since holiday traffic is going to really suck. Isn't Thanksgiving the worst holiday for travel? I know I will be hating life driving back from Philly in traffic on that Sunday. Just a thought.
Christian 11-21-2002, 03:57 PM i heard of the 5 fish limit at last night's mass bass meeting.
$10 each for the pool, sounds good, real good. anybody here ver caught a pool fish before? just want to know my chances.
Fish_n_Dive 11-21-2002, 09:25 PM Wait, hold everything. Has anything changed since the begining of the post other then a lot of people saying that they want to go? Is there any info (Who, What, When, Where, Why :smash: , and How)

JohnR 11-22-2002, 08:42 AM Isn't Thanksgiving the worst holiday for travel? I know I will be hating life driving back from Philly in traffic on that Sunday. Just a thought.
S.O.t.B - Howya doing? It's funny that you mention that, 10-12 years ago on a Sunday after T-giving, I spent 14 hours traveling from the Key Bridge just outside of Balt'more to just over the Tappan Zee Bridge into NY. Only took 3 hours to get from there to Boston... That sucked...
Checked the schedule and I'm in!
Anyone know how many they fit on these boats? I know they are bigger than the A.L...
OK - I got a question for all you interested in the trip - if we go, it's $35 per head. For every 5 people that go, the 6th one is for "free". Would it be ok to dontate the "free" to the site for the bills? So if we get a bunch of people going, it would raise a couple bucks for the site costs too...
Thanks...
BTW - Fishsmith, thanks for the legwork on this - I'm going to call them today to confirm a couple more things...
fishsmith 11-22-2002, 08:52 AM No sweat John, I talked to the warden and she gave me Dec. 1st off to go fishing, so I'm in.
To raise some $$ for the site, if everyone attending brought in some fishing gear with a value of at least $5, we could have a raffle at $5 a ticket to win the all the booty. Just a thought.
Big Vern 11-22-2002, 09:10 AM So...I take it that you guys are talking about the Dec. 1st trip on the Capt. John boat out of Plymouth? If that's the case, I'm into it. What does the thirty-five bones get ya? Do I need to bring my own gear? Boat rods and cue sticks aren't just lying around my place. What about bait/lures? Again, 8 oz. jigs aren't just hanging around my place. Let me know.
On another note, I will be taking $8 buy outs on the biggest cod action. You can save yourself two bucks, and still see a cod the size of small child come over the rail.
JohnR 11-22-2002, 09:29 AM Looks that way....
You can rent gear on the boat for 5$ - they'll usually set you up for clams... I think 8oz cod jigs are too small - needing 12-18ounce and maybe more :eek5: ...
Canalratt made some real sweet ones for last year... :D
fishsmith 11-22-2002, 09:42 AM I'll bet the rods Capt John provides have very heavy mono, which will require very heavy jigs. I use 30lb spider wire, and 8oz jigs drops like a rock, plus Capt John boats usually anchor, so a fast drift shouldn't be a problem.
Canalratt1 11-22-2002, 02:19 PM I'm going to have to do some scrambling but may work out. I think you will need at least 12 oz. jigs up to maybe 21 depending on the tides and wind. This is anchor fishing and they supply bait. I may have a supply of jigs for sale but have to see and I have a large spool of Dacron for any body that needs a fill.
JohnR 11-22-2002, 02:27 PM C-Ratt - I spooled my 113 last year with your Dacron (I remember actually starting to feel a little green looking filling the spool in those 12 footers :yak: and I've never been seasick before), I was wondering how well that get's to the bottom compared to braid or mono -
Thanks,
John
Canalratt1 11-23-2002, 06:14 PM John that stuff works fine. The best line to use is a superbraid like Power Pro, Whiplash etc. then regular braid. Mono is the worst especially for jigging there is too much stretch when your down 200+ feet. Its OK when bait fishing. Hopefully I can go but it may be a last minute decision.
Christian 11-23-2002, 09:21 PM some boats dont allow power pro because the mates can cut their hands on it.
What happened, did you guys go?
Did i miss the trip??
I've been on vacation, what did I miss??
BIG cod??
Little Cod??
Any Cod??
Details......
Christian 12-02-2002, 03:00 PM trip got cancelled. gale winds, big waves.
Yea, i saw it in another thread, after I posted here.
Well i hope it does happen, no more vacations planned for me
so I would like to go.
