All this talk about abu ambassadeurs and conventional backlash troubles, how about spinning reels??? Are there any good spinning models for baiting out there??? The Shimano baitrunner, is that a good reel??? Any spinnin rods??

Shimano Baitrunner is a good, reliable reel for soaking bait, or for live-lining. The regular Baitrunner at around a hundred is fine, no need to spend the extra dough for a Thunnus.

Don't buy any of the other baitrunner reels, Tica, Okuma or whatever. They aren't that much cheaper than a Shimano and won't hold up as well.

Rods? Get a good custom from mikecc. Get a spinning rod built on the Lamiglas SB 121 3M blank, and your grandkids will be catching fish on it 50 years from now. The difference in price between that and something like a Penn or Daiwa won't be all that much. It can also do ya well for throwing big poppers and heavy jigs if the urge comes over you ;)

Thanx Mike P, but I have a gift certificate from a store, and I can;t get that custom, what would be your second choice...remember, I will be chunking herring, mackeral and squid and fishing live eels and maybe live mackeral. This will be the only purpose for the baitrunner and rod.

Daiwa Sealine-X. Or whatever Penn calls their surf rod (used to be the Slammer) these days. I hear both companies have the same manufacturer build their rods for them ;)

I think these rods are rated 3-6 oz but will probably throw 8---as long as you don't try to power the cast.

I own four shimano 6500 BRs.

Two of them I have owned for quite a few years.

IMO they are work horses. I use them for chunking and live
lining. They can take a beating and salt soaking and are still fine.

If one ever dies, I'll buy another.

I have them all matched on ugly sticks.

Kool Van,
You have aroused an idea.

I currently own a 7" Ugly Stick tiger ML action 12-30# line matched with a Penn Spinfisher 5500SS. this is my lure rod.

Now that I am buying a combo for next season for only chunking mackeral herring and squid strips, and also "live-lining" eels and herring, I want to buy the Shimano baitrunner. The rod I will get will be the Daiwa Sealine X:
SL-XS902MRS M R 9' 2 12-30# Lure wt. 1-5 Guides: 5 $59.95

Now here's the idea: Since longer rods are better casters for plugs and lures, I will switch the Ugly Stik Tiger and put it on the Shimano baitrunner. The Penn Spinfisher will have the Daiwa Sealine X, which is 9'2" (ussed to cast lures)

How's this sound??

sounds reasonable.

I use 9' U-stick in theboat so i can get a good cast into rocky areas without getting in too close.

How long is that tiger?. I have a tiger that is 11 footer I used to use when I was a surf fisherman.

the tiger is only 7' .... its ML action and rated for 12-30# line. It's easily identifiable by the little yellowfin on the base of it.

So, it sounds as if I should be using the shorty for bait, since it's rather stout, and I should use the 9' Sealine for lure casting for the added distance ans surfcastin style.
Obviously i'll put the BAITrunner with the BAIT rod, I think the spinfisher will be a better lure caster rather than chunker.

Oh yes, and this is my selection for the Daiwa Sealine X surf series rods:

SL-XS701MFS M F 7' 1 10-20 1/2-2 5 $49.95
SL-XS802MRS M R 8' 2 12-20 3/4-3 5 $54.95
SL-XS902MRS M R 9' 2 12-30 1-5 5 $59.95
SL-XS1002MHRS MH R 10' 2 15-30 3-6 5 $64.95
SL-XS1102MHRS MH R 11' 2 15-30 3-6 6 $84.95
SL-XS1102HRS H R 11' 2 20-40 4-7 6 $84.95
SL-XS1202MHRS MH R 12' 2 20-40 4-7 7 $89.95

Which one would match best with my lure casting reel (Penn Spinfisher 5500SS)??

5500SS: Line capacity: 275/12 Ratio: 4.6-1
(I spool it up with 15# Trilene big game green tho, casts nice)

WHICH SEALINE???!!!!

I fish a bait caster, on a 6'8" St Croix rod, in the fresh water. (Well... not that I fish fresh water since I hit the salt. ;) )

Right now I have an ok PENN PG3000 spinning reel on an 8' PENN Newport rod. Bought it for piers but use it in the surf.

I'm going to upgrade for the spring and right now I plan on going to a PENN Slammer spinning reel on a 9' St Croix or Lami rod. I really like my St Croix so that will prob win out.

That's my .02. Just some ideas.

Rob

BTW:
If I were in a boat, I'd prob get a conventional reel.

Well, since the 8' Sealine X surf takes 12-20#, It'll match my reel which has 15# big game green on it. The nine foot model looks better for casting but takes 12-30#. Is this overpowering my Spinfisher 5500SS?? It's recommended at 12#, but 15 works fine on it, if I put a 9 foot (12-30#) will it be "unbalanced tackle"???
I really want the nine foot because it is further casting and more "surfable".
thanks;)

What am I talkin about.... its a surf series rod....
8' is still good in the surf....right?? It's still a long caster, right??
I think i'd rather have a rod that matches my reel rather than a rod that doesn;t match as well but can cast better.....think i'll stick with the 8'
thanks:jump1:

Personally... and not that I have ANY IDEA as to what I'm talkin' about... I'd go w/ AT LEAST a 9' rod for the surf!

I have a 8' daiwa sealine X w/ shimano baitrunner 3500......I have used it for everything......even a 20# w/14 pound test!!! I can cast better with this than the 10 footers.........I think its a great set up for the $$$ and has been my favorite so far.......and like I said I have used it for everything...I am not one who canm be bothered lugger a million rods with me... (unless I am in the sand sled)
