Good thing I carry an extra. afterhours 08-29-2008, 05:53 AM SOP for me now after my one light crapped out one dark night on CH- thankfully gary soldati had a spare. Crafty Angler 08-29-2008, 05:58 AM SOP for me now after my one light crapped out one dark night on CH- thankfully gary soldati had a spare. I've carried two with me ever since the night I got the Jehovah beat out of me on some rocks trying to get back in during a big swell. A good scare will teach you more than good advice or so I've heard. Two. Always. A Princeton Tec 40 on some surge tube around my neck and a duplicate spare in my bag. I also have a USCG approved emergency strobe velcro-ed high up on my wader strap just in case. Old Uncle Zeke used to call it a body recovery device but I figure upping the odds if you go over the side never hurts. Don't leave home without it. maddog2020 08-29-2008, 06:07 AM I always have at least one or two of those Photon micro lights on me. I use the orange colored one when I walk at nite whether fishing or whatever. I pack mine with grease to help stop rust. I've also started to carry a small glow in the dark compass !! I've not gotten lost fishing, but I have stayed in the woods too long and walking out with no lite land marks is a real drag. :( Better safe than sorry. Doesn't hurt to carry spare batteries in a Ziplock along with some of those breakfast bars/energy bars as well). Those Fenix LED lights are the bomb for the $. Those chunky little D123 lithium batteries hold a charge for over a decade. LED bulbs won't burn out easily so you don't need to worry about busting the wire on the bulb. 5/0 08-29-2008, 06:09 AM Due to energy cut backs there will no longer be a light on at the end of the tunnel:jump1: Justfishin' 08-29-2008, 06:27 AM Always- small red one on my hat and a Maglite with a litebite on a lanyard around my neck inside my shirt. And sometimes I even carry a third small cheapie in a pocket if I have one. DZ 08-29-2008, 07:01 AM I also have a USCG approved emergency strobe velcro-ed high up on my wader strap just in case. Old Uncle Zeke used to call it a body recovery device but I figure upping the odds if you go over the side never hurts. Man - I miss fishing with my partner Zeke. Best darn surf fisherman that not many people know about. Always have at least a small pen red light as a backup. I can remember using the old heavy Justright headlamps with 4 D cells and the friggin cord from the battery pack up to the light. Damn bulbs would burn out or the cord would corrode at the worst time - too big to carry an extra. DZ PaulS 08-29-2008, 07:39 AM In addition to my head lite (which is always on my neck for some reason) I carry a 6" maglite on tied on a string hanging off my neck and inside my waders. Some nights I don't turn on a light all night but if I use the 2nd light I'm damm happy I had it. Pete_G 08-29-2008, 07:45 AM I'm up to 3 on account of having 2 nights where not one but both lights managed to fail. I've since changed lights but I still usually have 3 lights on me; one small one for dealing with fish and other up close tasks, one bright one if I need it for walking or emergencies, and one more very waterproof back up light. They're all compact so even though 3 is a lot of lights it doesn't slow me down at all. decksweeper 08-29-2008, 07:46 AM More times than not, I have a small led around my neck along with a headlight. NIB 08-29-2008, 07:46 AM I've gone out and had 2 lights bad..:hs: Mr. Sandman 08-29-2008, 07:52 AM always carry a backup light. We all have "dark" stories. Tman1 08-29-2008, 07:59 AM I always keep a spare in my surf bag as a "just in case" light. I've actually used it quite a few times even when not really planning on fishing into dark. RIJIMMY 08-29-2008, 08:12 AM always carry two - you never know if the British will be coming by land or by sea reelecstasy 08-29-2008, 08:13 AM Always have my head lamp, and a good waterproof around my neck.. jim sylvester 08-29-2008, 08:24 AM princeton tec blast around my neck that use for retrying, ect one on my head for walking out the blast has amazing power for a small light JFigliuolo 08-29-2008, 08:46 AM Out at Naps, the point... VERY FOGGY. I have a head light, and a neck light. For NO reason the neck light turns on. I turn it off. a little later it goes on again... I turn it off. a minute or two later it starts flashing. I cannot turn it off. I bang it a few times... It goes off. Again, it turns on and I cannot get it to go out. Now I'm getting creeped out. I decide to take out the batteries. My greatest fear is that the light will stay on... It doesn't. Fish the rest of the tide a little unsettled, but no worse for the wear. I swear, If that light had stayed on I would have crapped myself. rphud 08-29-2008, 08:59 AM "head" light around the neck, mini mag on a lanyard as backup, extra batteries for both just in case of the dreaded double failure. spence 08-29-2008, 09:03 AM Head lamp around the neck and a Princeton Tec light on a lanyard, with a spare Princeton Tec in the plug bag. -spence Bronko 08-29-2008, 09:27 AM Head lamp around my neck. That is all. I like to live dangerously. MikeToole 08-29-2008, 09:43 AM Head lamp and a mag light on a cord around my neck every time. piemma 08-29-2008, 09:44 AM Head lamp around my neck. That is all. I like to live dangerously. me also. For years. Got caught short lighted a few times but so what. Let you eyes adjust and you can move OK. Crafty Angler 08-29-2008, 10:13 AM Man - I miss fishing with my partner Zeke. Best darn surf fisherman that not many people know about. DZ Me too, Dennis - he's out in the Northwest now banging barndoor halibut and cohos as you probably know. Hey, D, how about a light tackle blackfish category in the senior division for old guys like me and Zeke this coming year for the club record? :hihi: Nah, nevermind, Bryan and George will probably wanna get in on the action....:fishslap: JohnR 08-29-2008, 10:18 AM Always NIB 08-29-2008, 10:25 AM OK,I'll admit it I am a flashlight junky.. I have at least a dozen of em.I bought one last night. From this neat little one I wear on my hat for tying knots to the big blasters that IMO are still the best light made..And all the P-Tec models in between. Anyone else have this affliction..?? Crafty Angler 08-29-2008, 10:30 AM  RNC 08-29-2008, 10:31 AM I use a small headlamp for retying, unhooking fish... and a Surefire G2 nitrolon on a lanyard around my neck to navigate through the surf,rocks,etc... only problem with the Surefire non-LED lights are when they go dead there's no signs of the light dimming and they're $15 a pair for batteries at the nearest pharmacy. Rob Rockcrawler 08-29-2008, 10:39 AM Always have a spare in the plug bag, fits pretty good in the AS medium bag. And carry an extra set of batteries. The headlamp i have eats em fast. NIB 08-29-2008, 10:39 AM OK,I'll admit it I am a flashlight junky.. I have at least a dozen of em.I bought one last night. A headlamp can be fun under the covers also.:heybaby: :p:point::rotf3: :musc: SirWinston 08-29-2008, 11:13 AM always carry two - you never know if the British will be coming by land or by sea Ahem, in case you hadn't noticed, the British are already here!! :D You never know, they may be able to lend you a light if needed......:kewl: As for myself, my loyalty from way back is to the Royal Marines who are always able to arrive by land AND by sea :hihi: Crafty Angler 08-29-2008, 11:24 AM Yeah but you guys call it a "torch" don't you? Mike P 08-29-2008, 11:35 AM I usually have 3. Princeton Tec around my neck, a spare Garrity LED in my fanny pack, and a headlamp apiece in my jig and plug bags. And this is a guy who does 95% of his fishing in the Canal where there's a nav light every 1/10th of a mile :laugha: Back Beach 08-29-2008, 12:33 PM And this is a guy who does 95% of his fishing in the Canal where there's a nav light every 1/10th of a mile :laugha: I lost a light one night when accessing the canal from the 100 steps. Took me about 20 minutes to make it back up to my vehicle in the pitch dark. Stumbled many times and almost broke a leg. Now I carry two lights on one headband. Looks funny, but works fine. shadow 08-29-2008, 12:50 PM I carry two,yet one night my main light goes dead and my back up is also dead,so my partner and me share his light walking back a pretty good hike on some god awful black rocks, slippery as hell, well it takes us twice as long to get back to are cars, when we get back I remember that my cell phone has a flashlight feature.:o oh ya look at what my phone does. doc 08-29-2008, 12:51 PM maybe a dumb question, but why do you wear a headlight around your neck? shadow 08-29-2008, 01:12 PM maybe a dumb question, but why do you wear a headlight around your neck?for me it is out of habit, mostly it is more comfortable and I have better control of my light.I can drop it and cup it when I am talking with some one so I don't blind them.same goes when scouting the water for a rock. shadow 08-29-2008, 01:15 PM also I can't afford to constrict any blood flow to my brain.:spin: doc 08-29-2008, 01:17 PM i think you might constrict more blood flow to you brain with light around your neck!! Crafty Angler 08-29-2008, 01:17 PM A headlamp can be fun under the covers also.:heybaby: :p:point::rotf3: Geez, and here I am using a necklight...:hihi: SirWinston 08-29-2008, 01:56 PM maybe a dumb question, but why do you wear a headlight around your neck? So that when you are perched on a rock at dark thirty and a bloody great wave appears out of nowhere (which tends to happen with annoying regularity), it is not able to knock your light off your head into the welcoming darkness around you.....:eek5: Yeah but you guys call it a "torch" don't you? Headlight/necklight translates fine, but when it is 'flashlight', then guilty as charged, your honour....... Stumbled many times and almost broke a leg. Now I carry two lights on one headband. Looks funny, but works fine. I haven't done the 100 steps in years. That's why I have a bike, to access areas from the Run to the campground ;) smac 08-29-2008, 03:18 PM i will be this weekend. New moon baby! jimmy z 08-29-2008, 05:36 PM I have two spares, and extra batteries, at all times.:) steve 08-30-2008, 11:46 AM Always carry a back-up. BassDawg 08-30-2008, 02:12 PM OKAY!! alright,,,,,,,,Allready!! i'll go get a back-up today.......... always have a b-up of batteries, ziplocked in the backpack there's plenty of room for another necklamp and a "torch". maglites are the chit, even the minimags bust out some mega candleage; considering their size. ivanputski 09-01-2008, 05:31 PM I never understood why i see so many guys wearing a "head" lamp around their neck. When I need the light, I need it to shine wherever my eyes are looking... I dont need to look down and jam it into my chest with my chin... and you KNOW its not going to be shining where you need it. I think most wear it around their neck out of fear of looking like an over-zealous newbie... to show how seldom they actually need it. Who knows, but for me, a light dangling on my neck is a flat out nuisance. Pete F. 09-01-2008, 08:42 PM I never understood why i see so many guys wearing a "head" lamp around their neck. Who knows, but for me, a light dangling on my neck is a flat out nuisance. If you have bifocals it works a lot better. It won't fall off. I get less light in my eyes with it around my neck. Joe 09-01-2008, 09:58 PM I used to use rechargeable batteries - I would always have a light fail during the cold nights of fall. I use an LED light now and alkalines - never have had one fail - but I still carry two. It's dark about twice as long in the late fall as it is the summer. Saltheart 09-01-2008, 10:16 PM headlamp , minimag in pocket , LLBeane lcd light clipped to jig bag. I think most wear it around their neck out of fear of looking like an over-zealous newbie... to show how seldom they actually need it. Who knows, but for me, a light dangling on my neck is a flat out nuisance. The one I have is essentially a headlight. Hang it around your neck (so that bloody wave can't get it without a fight...) until you need it , then move it up to your forehead and bring the strap up as needed... A hell of a lot more comfortable over time, to say the least. The one I have also has an adjustable LED head, which does pretty well even at the neck, or when I sometimes bring it up only to place the pad over my mouth (too busy/lazy to get it up to the forehead and works almost as well, without it getting in the eyes at all).
