View Full Version : THe Habs Fall Classic - Oct. 10-12, 2008
Crafty Angler 09-04-2008, 12:14 AM Just got off the phone with Pt Jude Joe a little while ago and we discussed some of the points many have had here in regards to doing a tournament. The idea, put very simply, is to have a reason to get together to remember John.
Joe said he'll run everything by Jess in the next few days so everything will done according to her wishes as it should be.
The key to the tourney is based on the K.I.S.S. principle - just keep it simple. The spirit in which the tourney is conducted should be respect and love for Habs and his family. Period.
Since Joe is with the family regularly and works with John Jr just as he worked with Habs himself on production, I knew he was the guy who would ensure that the family's wishes are followed to honor the memory of a friend who is no longer with us.
Anyway, the long Columbus Day weekend would make the most sense, with the tourney to run from 6:00 PM Friday through 6:00 AM Sunday morning. If anyone is interested, I can talk to the owner of Flo's Clam Shack who's a good friend of mine for a Friday Happy Hour meet and greet to start things off.
Then we get to fish our butts off 'til 6:00 AM Sunday morning :btu::btu::btu:
Like DZ said in an earlier post, make it a surf contest and we agree. John was a shore guy, not that he or anyone else had anything against boats. No tackle restrictions, Habs himself used whatever worked best to put fish on the beach - or rocks, as the case may be.
Prizes and categories should be simple, too, if we want to get this done in the time frame we have to work with. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners based on certified weight at one of the weigh stations, with the perpetual trophy and donated prizes to go to the largest bass. 2nd and 3rd place finishers get awarded prizes and a smaller trophy if we can afford them. I'll kick in some very nice prints from my collection as will Joe from his line at Pt Jude Lures. If anyone else wants to contribute prizes, they'll be gratefully accepted.
Joe and I will talk to Billie at the Blooberry Factory :hihi: (also known as the Coddington Brew Pub) and see if we can do an awards get-together there at some point in the afternoon on Sunday - say maybe 4:00 or so - have a few cold ones and something dinnerish, award prizes and hold a raffle so everyone has a shot at winning something, sort of like our TFCTFN raffle. John loved the place and we had some great times with him there. For entertainment, we may be able to get Mike Laptew to show some of his latest footage. Maybe we can get Iron Mike to recreate a performance or two from the past as well :rotflmao:
After that, everyone will have the Monday holiday to recuperate after a full weekend and be able to rest up before the work week.
That's pretty much it, no fuss, no muss, just a good time fishing and hanging out. If anyone wants to get more elaborate, there's always next year.
We may also be able to get Habs pins for each of the entrants - the oval Habs pins with "#1 Needlefish" on them, but Joe has to check with Jess to see how many she has left before we know if it's do-able or not, so that's not a sure thing. It would be incorporated in the registration fee, perhaps $15 or so.
Well, that's it - keep it simple, get together, have fun, catch fish.
A great way to remember a great guy.
Slipknot 09-04-2008, 06:34 AM Sounds good Crafty
I'm sure I can get a day off from the boss to fish this one.:uhuh:
Pete_G 09-04-2008, 07:26 AM Flo's AND Coddington? Is there really going to be any fishing? :buds:
I'm sure someone already looked (I just tried but couldn't find the email) but we might need to double check that this date isn't already occupied by the Fall Surf Casting Club Challenge. I don't know which weekend it is but it must be nearby.
Sounds like a memorable weekend Chuck.
Crafty Angler 09-04-2008, 08:07 AM Flo's AND Coddington? Is there really going to be any fishing? :buds:
Pete, no guts, no glory...:hihi:
Yeah, it's going to be a blistering pace but the way I see it, you've got a month to run the crew through 'warm-up drills' for the main event. You've got youth on your side, too.
Hey, maybe you could ask the Iron Wonder to coach the SWE team :rotflmao:
On a serious note, we knew there could possibly be conflicts with scheduling for some, but the long weekend makes the most sense to put it together and make it do-able for most people. Putting it together on short notice doesn't give us a lot of latitude in terms of selecting dates.

I've not seen or heard anything about the fall MS/MD Club Challenge as of yet. I sent an email 2 weeks ago to the organizer and have not heard back from him.

Well Done, Joe and Chuck, and huge KUDOS for thinking of this event and

Clammer 09-04-2008, 09:15 AM C/A
I,m not in any shape to f #$%^&*( rock hop ..
but i,ll be there /for John & ya can count me in on something towards to raffle ..... 5000 hot wheels cars /LOL
no we.ll talk & i,ll have something ;;;
A one way boat excursion with the CLAMMER /
all rocks, crashes & flips overs are added bonuses ,.,,.:kewl:
piemma 09-04-2008, 09:32 AM Since I can't surf fish anymore,(actually have a check-up oncology procedure this afternoon), I back Clammers offer with mine. I offer a 4 hour morning boat/fishing trip as a prize. Have to be in the Bay but we can hit the lower Bay such as Anawan, Bonnet, Newport etc.
You guys figure out how to award the prize.
Crafty Angler 09-04-2008, 09:40 AM Hey, Clamma and Paul - you guys are the best, no doubt about it - can't thank you enough for the family :btu:
Don't worry about rock-hopping - I'm starting to realize my days are numbered too - well, in that department anyway.
If you can eat and drink beer - or sodas, whatever you like - there will be plenty to do that weekend.
Besides, grouchy old bastards like me and Joe need a cheering section to give us the strength to go on :hihi:
Hey, I may not be as good as I once was but by God I can be as good once as I ever was.
Crafty Angler 09-04-2008, 10:09 AM I just got off the phone again with Pt Jude Joe and he ran everything by Jess this morning - she's very happy about it.
They do still have some Habs pins we can give to entrants in the tourney and they will be incorporated into the entry fee so everyone who enters gets one (as long as they last, anyway).
A second weigh station is going to be added here on the island at Edwards Bait and Tackle over on Connell Highway (just down the road from the Blooberry Factory). Kevin opens real early (I'll get the times from him) and is happy to help out. There will also be a SoCo weigh station which I think is Quonny but I'll have to double check on that.
I've got a call in to my friend Komes from Flo's Clam Shack about the Meet and Greet Friday nite, should be a go. Me and Joe will also talk to Billie over the next several days at the Blooberry Factory for the awards get-together. I'll also talk to Mrs Iron Mike to see if Michael can come out to play with us - and I'll have DEM on stand-by with nets and tranquilizer darts just in case :hihi:
That's pretty much it - I gotta turn to, got new tenants moving in in a couple of days so I gotta hustle to get the apartment finished. I've got beaucoup to do and the drywall dust and paint better start flying. The C.N.O. (Chief of Naval Operations) is due home at 1730 hours :lasso:
piemma 09-04-2008, 10:56 AM You are welcome. Mike and I are happy to help. John was a good friend of mine for a long time. I have several Habs needles that are pre-92. No, they are not for sale. I plan on being buried with them in my coffin. I'm kidding of course. My kid will get them.
Dad 818 09-04-2008, 11:20 AM May be able to enter, but have to wait until I go to the orthopedist on 9/15. Dislocated my casting finger and may have ligament/tendon damage in it.
Plus I work all day on Saturdays. But if I can't get into the tournament, I'd be glad to try and help out in anyway that I can.
Will post a definitive answer hopefully by the 16th.
cheferson 09-04-2008, 11:57 AM Sounds good! Im defienetly in.

DZ
The MS is 10/24 - 10/26. A week later than it was expected, but confirmed via email this week.
As to the Habs tourney, I really like this idea and should be fishing that weekend anyway. How are we doing registration, sending in the entry fee, etc..?
hyefisherman2 09-04-2008, 05:18 PM sounds like it would be a good time for sure!
i might be able to make it...not sure yet.
Goose 09-04-2008, 05:41 PM Are you keeping it Rody only and what about bait?
JohnR 09-04-2008, 06:59 PM In - Chuck PM coming...
Crafty Angler 09-04-2008, 09:04 PM Thanks, Cap - check your In Box -
TLap, we're working out the registration and payment details now - I had stuff I had to get done today so I was away from the computer. Details to follow very soon.
Ran into my pal from Team Azores :rotflmao: - that's Pt Jude Joe - at the SWE late this afternoon and got a lot of stuff figured out.
Stay tuned, don't touch that dial. Trust me, you'll like it.
A lot :uhuh:
Crafty Angler 09-04-2008, 09:31 PM Hey Goose, I'm sorry it's been a long day and I just saw your question again -
Yeah, for the first annual it is Rhode Island waters only - it's the Ocean State and Habs home turf.
Try it, you'll like it :D
Honest, you will. Ask Gilly :btu:
tynan19 09-05-2008, 08:23 AM Nice to see you guys this afternoon. I think Joe said Capt. Don's (Quonny) will be a weigh station as well for the SoCo guys. We all appreciate the efforts Crafty and Joe.
Pt.JudeJoe 09-05-2008, 12:30 PM A wee update on this project...We are going to get some registration slips and weigh in slips made up for the 3 weigh in shops: Quonny Bait &Tackle (see Tim the owner) formerly Captain Don's on rt 1 in Charleston, Edwards Bait and Tackle in Newport ,Kevin runs this shop, (Connell Hwy near Walmart and next to the Hillmart convenience store), and the Saltwater Edge on Valley rd in Middletown.
I believe the Boss called Chuck and said we could use paypal thru this site to register as well. All we need bascically is name, address, and phone #. $15.00 gets you in the tourney and a HABS pin,(the ones they had at the RISAA show). DON'T REGISTER YET AS THIS IS ALL STILL IN THE PLANNING STAGE! We'll let you know when it time.:wid:
We're going to see if we can have the awards at the Coddington Brewery on Connell Hwy, Sunday afternoon (Pats don't play till 8:30) We will also have some kind of raffle at the awards for cool stuff donated by cool people and company big wigs.
Ok that's yer update stay tuned.
Pt.JudeJoe 09-05-2008, 12:33 PM btw can we apply some internet adhesive to this thread?
JohnR 09-05-2008, 01:44 PM btw can we apply some internet adhesive to this thread?
Done :)
Yes, we'll be able to run tickets through PayPal for those that want to do it online (just not yet, after we get everything figgered owt)
Clammer 09-05-2008, 03:59 PM is this going to be open to just S/B .com members ???? there are alot of other fishemn the knew & liked John /that maybe interested ????
jbuck 09-05-2008, 04:49 PM Open to all.
Crafty Angler 09-05-2008, 07:52 PM Just a note on the awards get-together at the Blooberry Factory - maybe we can get people to indicate whether or not they're going to come on Suday so we can give Billie a number to expect and maybe have the room set up for it if we have enough coming.
Me and Joe are gonna go over this coming week to get that end of things locked down so that's taken care of.
Flo's Friday may just be for whoever shows up for it as a gathering spot to kick it off - my friend who owns it is tough to track down. Looks like I'm gonna have to get crafty on him - you have to be vewwwwy quiet when you're hunting wild Greeks :hihi:
I'll just be drinking sodas Friday anyway since I'm gonna sling eels all night in rocky places.
Yeah, I figure I've got a month of training to get myself back in shape and I've got a friend reworking something special for me with strong mojo. Robbie T knows just what it is, too :)
Hey Rob, BTW, I'm still looking for that special thingy we were talking about - as soon as I find it, it's yours my friend ;)
Crafty Angler 09-06-2008, 08:01 AM DON'T REGISTER YET AS THIS IS ALL STILL IN THE PLANNING STAGE! We'll let you know when it time.:wid:

Flaptail 09-08-2008, 08:44 AM Pardon me for asking but shouldn't a tourney in John's memory be a surf classic using only Hab's plugs?
It may be he fished eels but his plugs made his reputation.
Seems kinda weird that it not be Hab's plugs only.
Sorry, not trying to mess up a good thing.
Maybe a Hab's plug caught category?

Steve,
The organizers of this thing are up against a time constraint this year. Trying to keep it simple and not so big. When things are big you need a large staff to run it. I'm sure the format can (and will) be tweaked in the future to include special catagory's, divisions, etc.
Priority now is to remember John and raise some funding to finance a memorial in his honor.

What Dennis said.
Also, please feel free to re-read the opening post in this thread.
All of it, including the quote below.

Crafty Angler 09-09-2008, 08:10 AM What language is this written in? :jump:
I dunno, Paul - at first I thought we had someone starting to channel Habs but after reading it again I think scotty is channeling Clammer :laughs:
Maybe you oughta see if he can switch to one-six
Just kidding scotty - I read you loud and clear. Over.
Crafty Angler 09-12-2008, 06:04 AM Just to update you guys, Joe and I went over to the Blooberry Factory day before yesterday and spoke with Billie about the Awards Ceremony - it's a done deal, he's psyched about it. We're gonna have the whole bar and dining room area with the big-screen TV's. Phew, got another one taken care of. So it's on for the Coddington Brewing Company on Sunday, October 12th at 4:00 PM, cash bar and dine as you like off the menu. Go here for details and directions:
http://www.coddbrew.com/
Hey, it's starting to look like we're on a roll :humpty:
I also spoke with a nutty surfcasting guy you all know - aw, hell, it's Crazy Alberto - and he's working on the posters for the tourney right now incorporating the portrait of John that he's done. He said they should be finished at some point over the weekend. I still can't figure out why they call him Crazy - I dunno, he seems perfectly normal to me :hihi: The posters will be at the weigh stations and one will be posted online here at S-B - I can't wait to see what Alberto has come up with for the tournament.
Then early next week Joe and I are going to go and get the tickets printed so we'll be ready to rock for guys to start signing up for the tournament.
Let the games begin :btu:
Stay tuned for further developments - and don't touch that dial :)

Steve, I'm not sure if I'm the only one who will be in the tourney that actually does not own a Habs plug. And I know there aren't any to be given away or purchased at a reasonable price. That being said, I'll be throwing the one Habs, Jr I got.
surfflyfish 09-19-2008, 08:36 PM sounds good.:ss:
Dad 818 09-22-2008, 09:07 PM Any update on when we can PayPal for tickets?
Pt.JudeJoe 10-02-2008, 07:28 PM Ok it's all set. John has the online registration going and all 3 weigh in stations , Quonny Bait and Tackle, Edwards Fishing Tackle, and The Saltwater Edge have the tickets and the Habs pins. Registration will go till 4 pm Friday Oct 10th. at the shops.
Alrighty then! Go out there and have fun :fishin: and know that you're part of a good cause......and while you're out there you might want to take a look up at the sky and remember John, and appreciate that our time is short here and we are very lucky be able to spend some of it fishing and meeting folks like John.
I entered yesterday. Let me tell you that the Habs Pin's alone are worth the entry fee. A must have for collectors of John's plugs and a great rememberence. The proceeds go to a great cause (in this case Hasbro) which is a must for any tourney that I enter. Even if you don't plan on fishing this event please consider entering - $15 well spent.
DZ
Goose 10-07-2008, 11:24 AM 3 weigh in stations , Quonny Bait and Tackle, Edwards Fishing Tackle, and The Saltwater Edge
Will any of the shops change their hours or give short window for weigh in's? I think the Edge opens 11am on Sunday and the tourney ends at 9am.

great idea in theory. but it opens up too much speculation and he said / she said crap about who was using eels, etc. also, lots of people don't have habs plugs. lots of john's friends fish out of boats too.
i'm looking forward to this. got a house to stay at in middletown for the weekend (wife's aunt and uncle just headed to florida today). just hope i can get out of work in time on friday to make it down to the meet and greet.
Crafty Angler 10-07-2008, 12:53 PM Will any of the shops change their hours or give short window for weigh in's? I think the Edge opens 11am on Sunday and the tourney ends at 9am.
Goose -
I'll talk to the shops involved as official weigh stations for the tourney - Edward's FISHING Tackle (Hey Kevin :bshake::bshake::bshake: I won't call it 'BAIT & Tackle' anymore, okay), the SWE, Quonny and Quaker Lane to see what the hours are. I do know the hours at the Edge are like 10 to 4 on Sundays, though - Edwards isn't too far away, just down the road from the Coddington Brewing Co. and on Sundays I think Kevin opens at 6:00 AM -
Or you can give them a call to see yourself - I won't get a chance today, I'm outta here for work in an hour or so
Work, the curse of the fishing class...........:wall:
piemma 10-07-2008, 06:47 PM So I registered right when this started and I would like to pickup my pin Friday morning at Quaker Lane. Is that possible?
Crafty Angler 10-07-2008, 11:48 PM So I registered right when this started and I would like to pickup my pin Friday morning at Quaker Lane. Is that possible?
Hi Paul - I'm assuming you registered online here at S-B - so if you have a receipt of some sort via PayPal, just see Steve McKenna at QL to pick up your Habs pin - if ya have any problems, let me know, I'll give Steve a call on his cell so you can get it -
Thanks again :)
piemma 10-08-2008, 03:54 AM Thanks Crafty. I may try to get down there today.
See you over the weekend.
I am going to print up some sort of certificate for the prize I am donating and will drop it off to Steve.
One 4 hour fishing trip on my boat in the Spring when the menhaden show up in the Bay.
Crafty Angler 10-08-2008, 04:47 AM Thanks again Paul
:kewl::kewl::kewl:
See ya this weekend
bassballer 10-08-2008, 06:54 AM i registered on pay pal last week. Cant seem to find my reciept though. is this going to be an issue?
Crafty Angler 10-08-2008, 10:18 AM Since JohnR is handling the online registration, I'll let him chime in here -
I've been busy with the brick-and-mortar shop stuff so he'll need to let ya know on that.
Probably the best thing to do is PM him - thanks
bassballer 10-08-2008, 12:11 PM Think im all set. I just went and saw steve and grabbed my pin. Just wrote payed online on the back of the ticket. Hope this isnt an issue.
Crafty Angler 10-08-2008, 01:35 PM It's all good, bassballer :kewl:
Stevie is da man - and from the start the whole point of the Habs tourney was gonna be fun, good sportsmanship and a good reason to get together to remember a great guy.
Issues? Hey, we don't have no stinkin' issues :hihi:
Good luck to ya, see ya this weekend :uhuh:
shadow 10-08-2008, 01:57 PM so did I miss something? Can I sign up at Q&L bait and tackle?
cheferson 10-08-2008, 02:37 PM so did I miss something? Can I sign up at Q&L bait and tackle?
You can pay online here and pick your pin up at one of the 4 weigh stations or just sighnup at one of them.
shadow 10-08-2008, 02:50 PM thank you.
Crafty Angler 10-08-2008, 03:07 PM Shadow, you can do it either way, guess you're a SoCo guy -
You can go directly to Steve or any of the guys at Quaker Lane to register and pick up your pin at the same time.
Quaker Lane was added to the roster of official weigh-stations and registration locations just last week. As hard as it is to believe, The Habs tourney planning only began a month ago as a way to commemorate the first anniversary of John's passing.
Great crew at QL if you are over that way - stop in, say hi and sign up - it's as easy as 1, 2, 3 :hihi:
This is the ultimate in no-muss, no-fuss bass tourneys - and it's gonna be a helluva good time to boot.
See ya this weekend :kewl:
nklinesider 10-09-2008, 08:04 AM im sorry to have to inform you that i wont be able to make it this weekend. just had to call off my wedding and move out and other joyous things like that, so sadly fishing all weekend has to be pushed to the back burner.... what bad timing for chitty chit to happen.

Crafty Angler 10-09-2008, 10:21 AM Hope all goes as well as it can for you, nklinesider - sorry to hear that.
Do what you gotta do first, the fishing will still be around for you when you need it the most.
nklinesider 10-09-2008, 01:52 PM thanks for the support guys this is all going to work out for the better, we had a son a month into our relationship and tried to make things work but it just wasnt meant to be. just trying to keep things civil between the two of us so matthew wont grow up in a bad situation and to stop things from getting worse while we have to be involved with eachother for the next 18 years no matter what
I'm in. Purchased my ticket the other day. Let's do this. :humpty:
Going to do my best to attend at least one of the social events. :gu:

I'm sorry, Norm - I was trying to get down at 5:00
sharp and didn't make it until 6:45 - I was bumming, a lot of folks bugged out early to get to their spots, I missed a lot of people I really wanted to see.
Had a bunch of loose ends to tie up for the weekend and had to get BOTH 704's fixed - one was DOA
Fortunately, the chromed one that was given to me as a gift by Senor Habs was able to be put back in working order - Kevin at Edward's squared me, I usually do my own but there were a coupla issues that had me stumped. It was the reel I wanted to be using anyway for the mojo factor - unfortunately it didn't help me much :rollem:
I took Pt Jude Joe, JohnR and Kevin from Edward's to a UDL they hadn't been to before, it was a bit of a walk in full regalia :hihi:
The payoff was the last 25 yards - it's a little...uh... craggy and ya gotta ford a tidal pool, I stepped in one of the pot holes and almost had my hat float - ran into some gorilla sized razor-lipped bastages and then everyone just finally got tired of feeding eels to bluefish. Man, they was some big buggas :hs:
At least there were no casualties and no man overboard drills - the swell was pretty small.
Anyway, see ya Sunday - it's gonna be a corker and I'll get to see all the people I missed last nite. There's gonna be some pretty nifty surprises - be there or be square :uhuh:
Oh yeah, BTW - this spot I took 'em to - also happens to be an excellent 'tog spot once the water cools a little more - so get yourself ready for some of Uncle Crafty's Drunken Blackfish Chowder :kewl:
See ya soon
piemma 10-11-2008, 10:03 AM Hey Chuck
I made the 2 hour drive from "God's Country". Burrillville can't be any further away from Newport and still be in RI. I really was looking forward to meeting you but I had a great time with Kevin, DZ (remenising about The Block in 05), Peter G and of course Clammer. Met a bunch of guys I talk with on this Board but never have seen face to face.
Can't make Sunday as we have my brother from New Mexico for dinner.
basswipe 10-11-2008, 10:32 AM No blues for just three small bass.Gonna head out and see if maybe I can't scare up something this afternoon before tonight's race. Then do it again in the very early am Sun.
