Has anyone ever taken kids out on the Yankee or the Capn Kid out of Harwich? A co worker of mine from Dennis is trying to introduce his young kids (5-7 years old) to saltwater fishing but he doesn't know that much himself. I'd take them out myself but I'm nervous taking my boss and his kids on the boat. I see a million ways that could go wrong. I thought these two boats would be good because it's not a long ride for them to the fishing grounds and bottom fishing is a lot of fun. Thanks for any input.

I spent my summers growing up and still have a place in Harwichport so I have a little insight.

Capn n Kids is really good for kids 2-5 or so. I guess they set a minnow trap at the doc, pull a couple lobster pots on the way out, shoot a water cannon then fish for an hour or two for scup and sea bass. Everybody catches. (My good friend gave me this info, they went out on it Labor Day weekend)

The Yankee is a bit more "serious" but still a drop the bait down to the bottom and wait type deal. They catch a lot of bottom fish like scup, flounder sea bass and the occasional tautog. Captain Clem Kacergis and his crew are good guys.

Stay in a bay and take your boss and his kids fishing. At 5 and 7, kids want to eat and drive the boat, have some storm minnows set up on spinning rods and go schoolie crazy. A good day fishing may be the best career move you can make.

not a bad idea

Take the kids to Canal at Sandwich Marina on a west tide Or any other similar dock/structure) and set them up on the west corner with small rods with Seaworms on hooks - all the Choggie action they can handle. 1/2 - 1 ounce weight depending on the current.

Don't let the kids unhook the choggies so they won't get stabbed by the dorsal fin (probably not a good career move)

Took a cub scout den out on the Yankee Fleet for a 1/2 day once. they did well with them but we hit some big water and a couple of the little guys got sick.....make sure they Dramamine up the day before as well as the day of....just in case.

Used to fish on the yankee every summer from late 70's to mid 80's. Not sure if its the same owner, but it was fun and definitely suitable for the kids.You might want to stick with the half day trip for starters. I know they fish right in the sound, so its not too bad a boat ride out to the grounds, either.

Might be a little too intense for a 5 year old, but i was 7 when I made the first deep sea trip with them.
