200 square isn't squat in the water.. you'd do better faster with a couple snag hooks.

I got mine at Monahans..

you will not do much with a 25' net. It sounds like a lot but they will swim around you be for you can say 'cheap bunker'.

]1) get the permit (it is only 30 bucks or 60 bucks but it is cheap)
2) get the right net
3) work the areas they allow you to
4) don't get caught working in other areas.

You can get enough bait for yourself with a 8' cast net but if you really want to clobber the bunker you need a big gill net. I am not a fan of gill nets but they allow them but they are limited. From what I understand you can't gill net in BB but there are a couple guys that are "grandfathered" in and they catch bait for a lot of the local shops. I don't know all the details but I do know that my 8' cast net can provide me with more than enough bait for myself.
It is getting kind of late in the season to get into this. The time to get the permit is after the new year. I think they may limit them now.

Joe I can give you all the details, but I will tell you this. YOu fish in the same areas as me, and I have not used my net in weeks, because they are so thick, I can easily snag what I need for a day fishing. (Unless your bluefishing !!! LOL) If I run out , I go back and snag some more. Also if you put a net out in these areas, you will spend HOURS clearing the net of dead/dying pogies. ALso why I have a smaller net.

You should know where I am talking about.

I bought a 20 x 10 ft. net (3 1/2 inch stretched) and it is useless. It is way too small. I agree with the posts above to get the Comm. Lic. and pay the extra $30 for the net and get something with some length.

IT is caqlled the Recreational Gill Net License and Sandman is dead on...there are rules and regs attached.

Do yourself fa favor and hook up with someone to see it done and learn a bit before you accidentally get yourself and others in trouble.

Mr. Basic Patrick, when I applied for the gill net permit I was told that I also had to have the commercial license, you could not just buy the gill net permit without the other.

Gill nets are a pain in the aZZ

Actually Patrick,
You get a gill net endorsement on your commercial boat permit,
same with striped bass being an endorsement on the boat permit.

Good point about hooking up with someone.

I just went through this gill net routine with fisheries people about a month ago. I may even have the e-mails still on file.

What I came away with is that the a recreational fisherman may use a gill net with a net no bigger then 200 sq ft. There are two ways to get licensed for a larger net. One way is a commercial licens with a net endorsment, about $160.00. The second is a licenes which cost less, probably the $60.00 figure stated. HOWEVER, the catch with this little number is that you can only net if you have NO ONE ELSE on the boat at the time you are using it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The logic here escapes me but there it is.
