Shopping for a new rod and looking at the SS10MHS. Think this rod is suitable for canal jigging 5 ounce bucktails? I know its a good plugging rod and not the perfect jjigging stick... but will it do the deed if called upon?

Yes--it will throw 5 oz bucktails if need be.

i dont own one but heard it was actually a better jigging stick and tough topwater stick. made you work to hard at topwater and after a couple hours you would be pretty beat. heard from a few owners but dont know from experience. but i am plannind on getting 1

Depends on where you're fishing. If you're throwing topwaters in the Canal, the current does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. All you have to do is noodle the tip to give the plug a little bounce.

It's still a moderate taper blank, when all is said and done.

I got one wrapped spinning. Very powerful rod and seems to cast a wide range well 2-5 oz. Great fish fighting tool, but I prefer my 1205 conventional for plugging (I don't fish the canal much or well, however).

i had last year's Super Surf and it was great until i snapped the thing in half during a cast. they re-designed the blank over the summer and Lami sent me a new rod a few weeks back. i've the fished the ditch with it 4 times since i got the new rod and had a few fish around 25 lbs jigging big shads. i've also caught fish around the same size throwing pencils at daybreak. i haven't caught a giant yet, but i think it would handle a big fish just fine. i think its a great all purpose rod that will get the job done in the canal as well as off the rocks, throwing monster eels and plugs....

Thanks for all the helpful info. Much appreciated. This is not a cheap rod so thanks for helping with the homework.

i loooove mine. (spinning) i've managed to do a little bit of everything with it. i've tossed as little an oz and as much as 8 with it. (4oz + half a pogie ) using braid, the sweet spot is 3-4. and it launches 2's pretty well. after 4 or 5ish, it starts giving way a little and you gotta take something off the cast. if you throw on a nice long shock leader how ever it loads much better in the 4-5 range. actually right now i have mono on it and its loading great at all ranges down to about 2. haven't gotten anything huge on it. but it handles nice with a fish on. and it can fight a rock like you wouldn't believe. i abuse the hell out of it. (like the rest of my gear) and so far no problems.

the only area it struggles is working pencil poppers. not soft enough. other than that, it does everything good. not great but good. while friends have a couple different rods for different things. i can just use this for everything.

i've never fished the canal though, so i have no idea how it would hold up in there.

Well I tested out this rod for 5 hours and I got to say... It is much stiffer that I thought. Was a bit difficult to load even a 3oz bottle. 2 and 1/2 oz darters...poor. In fact this rod to me seems more suited to a rating 4-8 instead of a 2-6.

As a jigging rod - :btu: No problem bouncing with 12" Sluggos with 5oz heads. If fact, this is a much better heavy jigging stick than a plug rod. Seems that if there was a sweet spot it would be 4oz or so IMO. 2oz is much too light for this thing. Didn't get a chance to fight any good fish on it (wish I had used it yesterday), but I'm sure it can handle any striper out there. It's a powerful beast, but not what I'm looking for. Have to agree with Hardbait on this one. Back it goes and the search continues...

Should also mention that I was not overly impressed with the Fuji Concept Guide System as it seemed to bottleneck my casts, but that's possibly due to the probs I had with the blank... or not.

Someone at the canal said that this rod was much stiffer than their 1 Piece SSU. The one piece I originally looked at also seemed much less stiff. Not sure what to think of that.

I have the SSU101MHS I love it ,took plenty of fish in the mid 30s in running current. Turnt them with no problem. Each year at the end of the season I sell off my rods . If your looking I have the M & the MH they are in great shape and they are for sale after this friday. My thoughts turn to 4 leg critters:deer:

Thanks Mike.

Test drove the factory 2 piece SS. Wasn't for me. However, all this researching blanks and rods is giving me a real headache. I may be in your shop soon to see what you have and see what you can do for me over the winter. :smokin:

One other thing I noticed about the Super Surf series--the one piece 11' (available only as a blank) is a totally different rod than the 11' two piece. Thinner butt diameter, much more of a moderate action. The two piece has a thick butt section and is much, much stiffer and faster

I think the 11' one piece will be a better plugging rod than the 10' MHS, and the 10' will be a better jigging rod.

Was looking at the ratings on the Lami blank charts online. To add to the confusion, some rods rate much higher and some lower to what they are in the real world. Therefore the charts are somewhat worthless when it comes to researching lure ratings. There is not any comprehensible standard. Did I say headache!

Checked out MikeCC's one piece SSU101MHS. Beautiful rod - just what I was looking for - was very tempted to buy it except that circumstances dictate a 2 piece rod. :rollem:

Mike agreed that the 2 piece SSU 10 footer is a totally different rod than the 1 piece. In fact Lami has no business even giving them the same model number.

Looking at the XS10* if I can even find any. Or maybe even the Tica TC3 Dolphin to get me through the season. Can't find those either. Oh yeah and G-Loomis Surf which are also hard to come by, and the....

*Seems to have crappy guides.

Yes, the factory XS and XRA rods come with absolute crap guides--the cheapest that Fuji makes. Lami probably saves a whopping buck a guide using them instead of Hardaloy--and on the XS series, they're not even spinning guides--they're oversized conventional ones :rollem:

LMAO, Mike P.

May be now that you have posted that people will listen to you. I've been complaining about Lamiglas guides for yrs and no one ever listened. ;)

I agree the Lamiglas Super Surfs are nicest current productions rods and they aren't any more than the Lami Arra series.

IMHO - using the same guides for both spin and conventional was just plain lazy on their Lamiglaes part! Yeah, the Hardloy are may be a whopping 1/3 more expensive. Total cost would have been under $5/rod in the volume they buy.

Deaf ears. I mentioned this on SOL when Todd Vivian was still a higher-up at Lami and he claimed that the oxide guides were just as good as the Hardaloy.

really? weird.. the sweet spot on mine is 3. and 1' and 2's throw pretty damn well. i have some trouble with anything over 4. a decent shock leader solves that though. it (mine) doesnt do to well with anything over 6. tried tossing one of the 8oz shads earlier in the season, if i laid into it it might have shattered. and 3-4 and bait, very iffy. cant really lay into it.

also i love the new guides system. i had braid on for a while and it wasnt anything special. but when i switched over to mono recently... it casts much better than other rod i have ever had with appropriate sized mono on it. though i was told mono would be a waste of its capabilities it turned out to actually emphasis them

i dont have much to compare it too other then my friends arsenals of specialty rods. (ya know 1 for 1 for that) and honeslty prefer for almost anything except the lightest of plugs (4inch plastic poppers, rebels and what not)

it definitely is a power house with a fish (or rock) on though. and it is pretty stiff (just how i like em)

understand its not what yer looking for.. i just find it interesting yer experience differed so greatly than mine on the weight front.
