Too tired to post huh.:uhuh: flyben24 09-25-2008, 03:42 PM so far it has been a very slow fall.... few fish caught and all very small..... hopefully it will pick up soon smac 09-25-2008, 05:37 PM I will be honest I have had a lousy fall so far. On the water by 4 and fishing 3-4 hours before work every morning for a couple tiny bluefish. One thing I have noticed is the fish are "one hit wonders". One hit and they are gone never to be seen again or heard from again. I made the mistake of going to one of the bridges the other night to change things up. I will avoid that place like the plague now, what a frigging circus. The wife thinks I have a little somethin' on the side now b/c I have yet to bring home a single fillet. Things have been real quiet for me. MrHunters 09-26-2008, 05:02 AM I will be honest I have had a lousy fall so far. Things have been real quiet for me. though I'm only here a week, I'm experienceing more or less the same. And viewing others, there is not much catching going on. The northeast wind for pretty much the entire stay has been a real bummer too. I'm happy we got at least one albie on the trip though. Guess next year will have to be a two week stay :hidin: kenyee 09-26-2008, 08:20 AM On the water by 4 and fishing 3-4 hours before work every morning for a couple tiny bluefish. One thing I have noticed is the fish are "one hit wonders". One hit and they are gone never to be seen again or heard from again. FWIW, it was the same across the bay (near Falmouth/Cotuit) last weekend. Mostly tiny snapper blues (6" or so) that would come over and nip the tails off your 6" sluggos (just enough so they don't wiggle any more) and then disappear. Tiny schools of them (5-6?). No big bait balls anywhere. Weird to see it so barren from a boat where you can cover more water than shore... DZ 09-26-2008, 10:20 AM Left the island early yesterday because of this storm. My first time there and I went through the learning curve but was able to find fish the three nights I fished. Most were on the small side but the last night I had three decent fish in the teens to low 20 lb class. MV is big and a lot to cover. I was impressed on how many guys chase the albies and bonito - they were all over the place. It was a tough transition for me because I'm so used to fishing darkness and slow. Hard for me to fish daylight and fast. Lots of very friendly fishermen. Got to see Matt Malowsky hand feed albie fillets to a seal at the derby dock - thing was huge. Highlight was having dinner with Mr Sandman and wife and swapping stories. Thanks for a nice evening Jim. The rip at Chappy is one of the most impressive moving water experiences I've witnessed. DZ smac 09-26-2008, 04:26 PM I have had the pleasure of sharing the sand with Mr. Sandman too. He's one of the good guys. I found a S-ton of bait last night! No fish on the them. Unbelievable. I used eels , bucktails, storms, tins and wood, Ugh :splat: lurch 09-26-2008, 06:10 PM fished in the hurricane this morning...HOLY $HIT!!! I lost a layer of skin from the sand, wind and rain. nightfighter 09-26-2008, 08:57 PM Just got in from MV an hour ago. 5 hour wait to get on ferry stand-by. We had reservations for tomorrow, but was pretty much unfishable this AM... Spoke with DZ midweek, and his success with the bass was best I heard of all week. Saw quite a bit of Bob Huddy, but he had no fish as of this afternoon... Fished beside Ray and Neefa of Linestretcher many mornings at the Light house. (She outfished him!) Also met up with Mr Hunters and girlfriend at the Edgartown docks. Saw Surf Pirate at weigh in too. Me, I got my first albie yesterday morning, and it made the week. It was my only fish! Hit like a freight train and was a blast to fight on light tackle. Though we fished consistantly with Weezer's Teasers (aka Swimmer), the albie took a metal needle with green reflector tape made by the illustrious Professor M! (Paul, going to retire it for first albie, so I'll need some more for next year.) Sure wish we had albies up here. I thought the rule was a fork length measure, and it was 24 3/4, so I released it. In hind sight, I could have weighed it, as it was over 25" minimum to tip, but is OK. As DZ said, a LOT of area to cover and learn. I will be watching catches on website carefully to see if fishing gets better.... but I will be back. I will also be back in the local waters tomorrow, early..... MrHunters 09-27-2008, 05:11 AM Just got in from MV an hour ago. 5 hour wait to get on ferry stand-by. We had reservations for tomorrow, but was pretty much unfishable this AM... Also met up with Mr Hunters and girlfriend at the Edgartown docks. Nice meeting you Ross. woke up this morning to not a breath of wind. Figures, right? We are off on the 1 PM ferry today and that 1 albie was our only one of the week too. At least it's something. Itching to get out fishing since there wasn't all that much done on vacation! Mr. Sandman 09-27-2008, 09:23 AM Smac, It has been steady with fish to the 20's. Some nights have had very big numbers of fish for some. The albie blitzs have been sporadic but when they move in everyone was hooking up. No shore bones to speak of. I noticed several shore 30's weighed in this morning. There have been some big blues too. It is not "hot" by any means but there have been some fishy nights. This weather will shakem up. Give me a call after this next blow, and before next weekend and we'll go out.:fishin: Next weekend my brother will be visiting and I think if the weather holds I may take him on the boat over to the area of my 2008 calendar and toss some eels into the shore and see what that yields. If not I'll be on the beach. DZ, nice to see you visit the "big" island. I hope to cross paths with you again later this fall on the little island. That seal is friggin huge. Matt was telling me he will eat any fish EXCEPT an albie...he spits it out, time and time again, even when cut into bite size chunks...he spits it out and lets it sink to the bottom but will take the bass, blue or bone fillet down in one bite...his favorite seems to be the bluefish. That thing has got to be 8' long and 3+' in dia. ProfessorM 09-27-2008, 10:30 AM Ross you made my day.:cheers2: I got something different for you next. Highlight of my year last year was the one I got with Numbskull. My first and I was hooked. Never felt a fish do what that thing did. Why i never tried before is beyond me . Sounds like you had a great time. reelecstasy 09-27-2008, 10:50 AM Heading over to the Vineyard the 5th-12th, hoping this blow will generate some steam! I love albies in the morning after fishing the night, that first run wakes me up better than any Starbucks crapachino.. Squid kids Dad 09-27-2008, 12:03 PM Chris..Hope to see you over there:jump: reelecstasy 09-27-2008, 12:38 PM You know you will Swimmer 09-27-2008, 12:46 PM We'll be sleeping in the truck overnight to be out there for first bite. MrHunters 09-27-2008, 03:43 PM We'll be sleeping in the truck overnight to be out there for first bite. was out there two days ago for a few casts. seemed like the only place on the island that you could cast from. Squid kids Dad 09-27-2008, 04:20 PM Fishing will pick up Oct 8th...:humpty: nightfighter 09-27-2008, 05:54 PM Fishing will pick up Oct 8th...:humpty: Hmmmmm, my son has a soccer game at MV on Oct 11th... Maybe I crash and ride with you guys for a day or two... tynan19 09-27-2008, 08:10 PM Ross, lol you got bit! Already looking for more. livinit 09-28-2008, 03:17 PM Left the island early yesterday because of this storm. DZ I still have both my arms too::): Wished I could have gotten a chance to fish with you Dennis, but it was very nice meeting you. Give me a call next time and I'll go fishing with you at 12 am. What are we gonna do with Sandman? :rotf2: livinit 09-28-2008, 03:23 PM Smac, It has been steady with fish to the 20's. Some nights have had very big numbers of fish for some. Just goes to show you . . . if a seal spits it out you know you shouldn't even attempt to cook those things. It's amazing how big those things are. I'm gonna stop while I still have all my digits and appendages, otherwise I'll be meeting with Sandman's wife to have her surgically put me back together. I like chatting with Denise, but hope to never see her in the ER. Squid kids Dad 09-28-2008, 05:01 PM Hmmmmm, my son has a soccer game at MV on Oct 11th... Maybe I crash and ride with you guys for a day or two... Ross..Will PM Swimmers cell phone..Hopefully we can meet up..Give us a call the day before.. BasicPatrick 09-29-2008, 12:13 AM Hey fellas, Figured I'd pop on for a second or two... Weather has been HORRIBLE. Albies sporatic but I got 4 so far (weighed 1 just under 10 for a potential slam I hope). I agree with Sandman about the Bass...certain places have lit up butit has been crowded. I have chosen to target mommies only and pass on the 20's so far. Nio shore Bonito Blues all over but sizes are up[ and down. Time for bed...Drumcorpsfan and Scotty have arrived. fishpoopoo 09-30-2008, 04:50 PM i spent a week on the island earlier in the month ... look, guys, the fish are there, they're not exactly huge but you have some good numbers. think stubby needles cuz they're chowing on sand eels! tynan19 10-01-2008, 12:55 PM Ben, you sure there on sand eels? 2 of ours had. JohnR 10-01-2008, 01:24 PM They had crabs? :rotf2: tynan19 10-01-2008, 03:11 PM You got it. They must have been getting around, right Rick? BasicPatrick 10-02-2008, 09:51 AM Overall fishing is still slow...shore albies have been gone for two days but that coule be weather related...Bass fishiing is picking up by the tide...bluefishign is steady...two shore bonito says it all on that one...hope remains and the weather is coolin off PaulS 10-03-2008, 07:20 AM You got it.
