View Full Version : Fall fishing so far
Back Beach 09-27-2008, 08:22 AM My guess is we have 4-5 weeks tops remaining in Mass and most of RI for the large 20 plus # fish . You can catch smalls :sleeps: <15# all year from shore, but these aren't the ones I'm inquiring about.
What are you seeing/experiencing so far on the big stuff from shore?
hyefisherman2 09-27-2008, 08:34 AM canal had some BIG fish the last two weeks or so...
Circlehook 09-27-2008, 09:28 AM It's still been deep in the night with eels for me. The canal and just outside of it have given me the best three weeks of fishing I have ever had.
I still think there are at least 2 to 3 good pushes of BIG fish through the canal remaining. Seems like there has been one amazing day a week followed by 2-3 very good days afterward. :fishin:
Slingah 09-27-2008, 09:55 AM My guess is we have 4-5 weeks tops remaining in Mass and most of RI for the large 20 plus # fish . You can catch smalls :sleeps: <15# all year from shore, but these aren't the ones I'm inquiring about.

Mike...isnt it the same every year just like when they show in the spring?? or is it a bit different due to tropical storms and such? I find it is just about the same this year...maybe a bit early...I really dont have a good handle on things though...but after this blow it is balls to the wall for me, I need large...
Nocturnal 1 09-27-2008, 10:01 AM The past couple of weeks have been non stop,my best season ever by far size wise.No doubt night time is the right time in the spot i'm fishing, last week fish turned on between 11pm-3am this week it's been 6pm-11pm. All at or just before the turn of the tide plugging. The best part, not many blues!:jump1:
Back Beach 09-27-2008, 10:53 AM Mike...isnt it the same every year just like when they show in the spring?? or is it a bit different due to tropical storms and such? This time last year I was looking high and low for fish with little to show. This year has been much more consistent. I've heard there's been some decent fish in the canal too. Seems like there's a good fall run going from the N.Shore all the way through RI right now.
As for spring fishing, its much more predictable IMO.
piemma 09-27-2008, 12:31 PM I've had a decent run in the surf since I pulled the boat early. Canal has been the most consistent place for me but I have been moving around in the Canal to find the big girls.
The last week has been great for numbers in SoCo but I haven't landed anything large - hooked up with what felt like a few nice ones but couldn't get them in. Seems like most of the fish I'm getting are in the low 30" range.
Did see a couple of fish taken over 30lbs.
Flaptail 09-27-2008, 02:55 PM Well we ran into some of these for two nights in a row at the beginning of this past week.
My guess is we have 4-5 weeks tops remaining in Mass and most of RI for the large 20 plus # fish . You can catch smalls :sleeps: <15# all year from shore, but these aren't the ones I'm inquiring about.

Mike,I've been fishing the PM & AM tides with good result so far, past three outings I've have landed close to 3 doz. bass from mid to upper 20# and a half doz.low 30-36# I also noticed there is plenty of mixed bait which will help hold the bass in place.
As most of us fish certain areas with preferred tides we have pretty much calculated how many more times out one has. Also our window can close quicker due to weather pushing the bait in & out of location.
I look forward to the closing season and what I can make of it.
BTW did you get yur phone fixed yet,it seems that it only allows incomming calls?
striperman36 09-27-2008, 03:16 PM Boat fishing has not been that pleasant. Although I haven't been out at night much at all this fall. Maybe next weekend.
Sea Dangles 09-27-2008, 04:10 PM Best I could manage last night was 37#. Too bad it was so skinny.Last year's best night for size was late in October.

JohnR 09-28-2008, 02:52 PM Sung the Blues this morning...
Striper_Haven_03 09-28-2008, 04:03 PM Best fall I have had. Many fish 25-35#s from the rocks early, early morning throwing snakes. Still waiting to break 40#. My buddy broke his personal best with a FAT 45" 37# this morning. We had 5 fish over 30#s. Fishing all this week until I collapse.
Have seen the binocular bunch show up at 7am waiting for the birds to work.....if they only knew what was taking place at 2am! Seems like everything is happening 3-4 feet below the surface showing no visible sign of large, but they are there.
Good luck to all.

freebie 09-28-2008, 04:10 PM started off slow for me but things broke this weekend, did ok in the surf last night, and then got out on a friends boat this morning and landed 2 fish around 40 inches, plus a couple blues, by the way Boston harbor was unreal this morning, falt calm and not another boat around, just foggy enough to keep the crowds in but not enough to hide the pogies
flyben24 09-28-2008, 04:46 PM still very slow where i am... waiting for temps to drop.......
Striper 09-28-2008, 05:18 PM This is by far the best Fall run for me. We might be catching bass all the way up to Turkey Day this year :buds:
Back Beach 10-12-2008, 08:08 AM Bump.
Curious to hear what guys are seeing now. My best guess is we're in the bottom of the 7th inning right now.(For quantities of large, that is) A couple good pushes of large have made their way past us and we're seemingly in a lull. I'm still getting good quality fish, but the quantities are less than 2-3 weeks ago. My best two weeks of fishing last year was October 11-25th, but things don't seem to be setting up for a repeat as of yet.
nightfighter 10-12-2008, 08:31 AM On the north shore, it feels like we're getting a no hitter thrown at us....
ProfessorM 10-12-2008, 09:28 AM This upcoming week should tell a lot in my fishing area. I have had good reports on lots of bait in the usual spots but fish are here one minute gone the next. Just got to be lucky not to pick the wrong area to be at.
piemma 10-12-2008, 09:40 AM Last 2 nights that I fished have been awful. We are between pushes and we need some "weather". A nice NE blow with a sharp front and a 30 degree drop in temps will light em up!!
Nocturnal 1 10-12-2008, 09:47 AM if they only knew what was taking place at 2am! Seems like everything is happening 3-4 feet below the surface showing no visible sign of large, but they are there.

:agree: No visible action,my spot is flat calm and quiet when i arrive but the fish are there!
Slingah 10-12-2008, 10:00 AM dinks galore....there are good fish to my north though ...that fat lady is walking out on stage...
BigFish 10-12-2008, 10:14 AM 2-3 weeks of hard fishing left here on the south shore...hearing of lots of pogies still just north of Boston? They gotta move sometime! I do not think the big push has happened yet?! Its only the 12th??
BigFish 10-12-2008, 10:25 AM Also have not seen the usual blitzes, no peanuts yet....its starting late I am telling you! Have not been alot of storms as in the past few years. A good blow would do it! Get them into motion!;)
Adam_777 10-12-2008, 10:30 AM Skunked today 3-7 am.RI in the bay.Pogies everywhere just having pogie party's nothing crashing the party all morning. They may be hugging the outflow pipes for the longhaul this winter.Big baits and nothing bothering them for about a week.
Tagger 10-12-2008, 11:19 AM On the north shore, it feels like we're getting a no hitter thrown at us....
South Shore feels your pain .. without naming names other places have been having a stella year .. everyear is different but my old holes drying up has me concerned .. that didn't sound good ,,did it ? :hf1:
numbskull 10-12-2008, 12:23 PM I've been eating a whole lot of humble pie.
ridler72 10-12-2008, 01:48 PM This has been one of the best fall runs for size in Boston Harbor, at least in my lifetime. Out, are the mega blitzes with a gazzillion schoolies, occasional larger, hammering peanuts and other small forage all day long. In, are many adult bunker-poagies getting hammered by the common 20-30lb class fish, at times, all day long. Imagine that, common 20- 30lb class fish. Boaters, Kayakers have feasted, and even surf casters are getting in on the action. Along with great fishing comes everyone from every walk of life, paintball guns have been an option for protection.
Snag and drop, thanks Mullet Miller, has been the most productive for me for that class of fish. Chunks and Blue'd Chunks, have brought up the larger lazy azz hogs up too 47lbs. Guess they don't feel like chasing a fleeing, turbo poagie. Since the 1st week of September it's been great. Yesterday and today has been slow, that's not a bad run for this angler looking like a weirdo fishing out of a kayak. :jump1:

Well then, invite Eddy up there so the fish will come down this way. Thanks.
Striper_Haven_03 10-12-2008, 03:36 PM First big push of Blues today in plymouth/manomet area. Until this morning its been void of blues but plenty of large stripers 25-40 lbs. Lost a dozen snakes quick but was rewared with a 33lber around 7am. Tells me the water is still warm and we have another 2-3 weeks of good fishing on the SS and still time to get that 50!
Just when I thought I was going to get some sleep...............

RIJIMMY 10-12-2008, 06:36 PM Out on the boat today 3am to 11am fished Narragansett shoreline, Beavertail and Brenton reef. We had a well full of live bunker and a bucket full of eels. Not one single hit, nothing even chased a bunker except for a handful of blue bite offs. Saw some surface action and ignored it, thinking it was blues. Around 9am went looking for topwater action, found nothing. we went all over. last year at this time there were mile long blitzes everywhere I looked.
k-e-v-i-n 10-12-2008, 08:28 PM RiJimmy- Your comment... made me feel a lot better after fishing almost 6 hours last night for 1 lost fish... fished from middletown to jamestown... dead.
i feel your pain buddy

Are You the guy in the robalo snagging in shallow water yesterday am ? I couldn't buy a hit either.Sad when you can liveline 1 fish for hours without anything. We need a good storm and another push of fish. The Bay is a deadzone.:wall:

No, I was in a Hydrasport, we got bunker @ 3am, in tight in by some boat slips.
Im optomistic that the fishing will pick up. Im just suprised at the lack of blitzes. I have not seen one peanut bunker this year. Last year my boat looked like someone pasted it with peanut bunker chum. Blues and bass were spitting them up. I am wondering if last year's massive bluefish slaughter took its toll on the bunker population?
Striper_Haven_03 10-13-2008, 09:24 AM Besides almost breaking my back @ 1 am this morning crawling out on my rock it was very productive for bass. 6 bass in the 30lb range and a friend lost a cow that took him into the rocks big. Blues showed up again at first light so we called it quits.
The fish seem super-powerful the past two weeks for some reason. Had a 30lber that fooled me into thinking she was at least 40 or so.
You guys to points south need not worry, they are coming.

I'm getting on a ferry this afternoon. What this means to those of you who aren't aware is the fishing will explode on the mainland shortly after my departure.I'll get a call tomorrow am from someone asking me WTF are you doing on an island when the fish are right here. Happens every time.
Only difference this time is I'm going golfing, not fishing.
Sharpen your hooks men, its(ferry effect) practically a sure thing..:uhuh:
Is this a rod holder..??
Bon Voyage...
Between trips to MTK I did manage back to back 30 lb nights here in NJ..While most are scoring some keeper sized fish ..:D.MTK was not as good size wise for me.There where some nice fish takin.Like the one landed as we pulled up that was 40 and the 38 that was takin out of my footsteps just as I left one night..
Numbers wise the place was off the charts this yr.For example..One of the pinhookers who gets 225 tags per year used 70 all of last season. He has 12 left for this year..
steve 10-13-2008, 12:53 PM '08 GANSETT REPORT THUS FAR- APRIL- GOOD to VGOOD, MAY- VGOOD, JUNE- FAIR to POOR for the sixth month, JULY- FAIR, AUGUST- GOOD, SEPT- FAIR to GOOD, OCTOBER thus far- GOOD. I've made 85 surf trips with 70 of them in Gansett. Lots of blues this month(oct) with 3 nice fish- 30, 37 and 40 pounds in gansett this month. Looking forward to next new moon. Hopefully weather will be good. One other point though, the bass fishing has been pretty good this fall but the disturbing thing is the lack of schoolies now as well as the entire year except for april and half of may. What's wrong.
ProfessorM 10-13-2008, 02:11 PM I hope you are right BB, Mike.:bl: I took the tin boat out front of Sandy Neck at dawn all the way from Scorton Creek back to Barnstable Harbor all along the beach. Not a bird or a break. Nutin. Stopped every 300 yards and casted. Zilch. Usually very good along the beach this time of year. All I got was wet, as it was a little rough, and cold. Did manage 2 small keeper's 100' from the boat ramp. I also got some beautiful pictures up inside Barnstable as the tide allowed me to do some exploring.
I sure hope you are right about those fish headed down from Manomet. Do they still allow you to launch a small boat from White Horse beach anymore?
redlite 10-13-2008, 07:47 PM Well. until last nite HORRENDOUS...., I had caught 1 fish (bass and blues combined) since Oct 1st, but as as most people will hopelfully deduce from everything so far this yea, I try to be kinda humble about the lucky horseshoe Ive had up my arse this year and anyone that lives down my way, I caught the most amazin catch of my life that even topped my 51# this year. 42.5 inches and it weighed in at 39.75#.....the absolute most mongaloted fish i eva did have......like Slingah says; "its on like Donkey Kong........Cha ching $$$$$$$$$.
I need a pulse check..........

Flaptail 10-14-2008, 05:44 AM Fished once this whole weekend, schoolies on the back beach ( Thank you Don @ Afterhours, they would only eat your green/silver needlefish, do you know you can swim that thing in the right conditions?)
Had a bad feeling with the high pressure, full moon, tides and crowds.
I was right.
Need some clouds, cooler weather and less people.
Hmmmm??? !!!!Thursday night!!!!!!!
Did clean my area of the basement, everything cleaned, oiled, stored and all the plugs hung where they belong, I can find sh!t again and found stuff I couldn't since late May.
Back Beach 10-15-2008, 10:27 AM I think for the most part "fall fishing" got a real good name in the past with the late October fishing on the back side, Gansett, Block Island, vineyard, etc. The falls have been lackluster in these places in recent years, particularly the last five years or so. These places are really living on their past reputations as opposed to present,IMO.
Fishermen are kind of like Charlie Brown waiting for the great pumpkin to appear and of course he never does.....
With the above said though, a number of lesser known spots have produced extraordinarily well despite the general consensus that the fishing has been sub par overall in the “go to” places.

I couldn't believe my eyes, either. The fish looked like it swallowed a wine barrel when Mike slid it up on the sand. We just stood on the beach laughing our asses off in amazement. Couldn't quite figure what the weight was so I ran back to the parking lot over soft sand and grabbed my scale before I took off to go home. The fish pulled the scale way down, but had a real small head and tail. Looked like a largemouth bass with stripes.
Rockport24 10-15-2008, 10:40 AM you guys that don't see any schoolies, I've caught tons of them from the kayak this year. A dozen schoolies in an outing is not uncommon, with the average being at least 6.
they are bigger though, like around 24 inches or so, compared to the 12-20 inch ones we used to get in the spring by the ton
Rockport24 10-15-2008, 11:30 AM Chunks and Blue'd Chunks, have brought up the larger lazy azz hogs up too 47lbs.

I think there is till plenty of time left..The fish seem to still be spread out, more like a early fall pattern as opposed to mid fall.
I still say the best is yet to come for you guys up there. After this moon the fish will really start to move.I hate the October Full in the middle of the month seems to mess things up..Anyways, I think You will find them in the more transient locals..perhaps for a night or two then gone.Keeping it honest is the hard part. Here today could very well be gone tomorrow..

nightfighter 10-15-2008, 05:37 PM I think it is over up here on the north shore. And hearing reports that Boston Harbor is getting thin. Talked with four other boaters out fishing this afternoon, and not a fish amongst us.... Only saw a single small pod of anchovies, no other bait to speak of. Local shore spot at night not much better. I'm going to haul the boat this weekend, so if there are to be any blitzes for me this year, they better be close to shore. Definitely the worst September/October I can remember.:cens:

The sharpies are still getting a few fish at first light including one in the mid-thirty# range yesterday but the bite is only on for a very short window of time. Absolutely the worst October I've seen ever. Still holding out hope though as the big mackerel are thick just North of here and some bigger bass will usually travel along with them.
Brian L 10-15-2008, 07:25 PM No schoolies? I Saw acres of them this weekend and caught dozens of them. No peanut bunker this year so far though, which is surprising.

Most of the big bass are gone, IMO. Slowest night in over a month last night. Things were trending down the last two weeks, and nearly got the skunk last night.
Of course I'll monitor the places I frequent for a couple more weeks, but the 20# plus numbers are dwindling quickly...

I'm with you. Probably going to go out friday night if conditions look good, than hang it up as far as local action. I'm ready.
Think the wife is working 11/8 and 11/9 so I may do a commando to BI to end the season officially.

BatesBCheatin 10-16-2008, 03:20 PM After a 2 week long run of mostly ditch schoolies I found the big bait and the bass this morning. Very fat fish in the wash up to 45" and 36lbs (using the /800 formula). They were there when I got there at 4:00 and had fairly consistant action until almost 7:00 when it slowed. Was so bright out I tried some Afterhours Seniors and did well on top in the moonlight... a first for me. :humpty:
Got my best of the night on an AH needle. All released except for a tubby 36" fish. Didn't spot another soul out there until I was leaving... No I wasn't at the ditch, but not that far from there either. :hihi:

Although the fishing has slowed the last 2 nights and the water temps are dropping fast, we are still picking up some good fish early mornings. This morning was not different with 2 good fish in the lower 30#s (late night) and a 3 in the low-mid 20#s around 6 am in heavy surf. We are still running into the occasional blue fish which tells me its to over yet.
Have a few freinds that are fishing to the north of me and they tell me while the fishing has slowed they are still beaching some in the 20-30# range.
Good luck you guys...theres still that chance!

Yes they still let you launch from Whitehorse beach, you dont even need a sticker! To do anything else in plymouth costs at least $100....suprised they havent started charging. Matter of time I guess.
piemma 10-17-2008, 09:09 AM I fish thru Thanksgiving. I remember in05 we took 24# fish on Nov 9th in RI.
I remember 03 (I Think) with Spence and RI Rockhound on The Block getting mid-teens the day AFTER Thanksgiving.
Flaptail 10-17-2008, 09:27 AM After a 2 week long run of mostly ditch schoolies I found the big bait and the bass this morning.
:hihi:
Re read your last statement. In these hard times you could be opening the door to company. There are many out there who search these boards for clues, though I am sure you may realize it now, you may have just tipped off a bunch of folks who do the leg work by sitting in front of a pc rather than doing it the hard way.
Food for thought. Though not specifically naming a spot, your close to it.
I have made this mistake before, just friendly advice.
Back Beach 10-17-2008, 09:45 AM Last three trips for me:
Sun am 10/12 - 30# and 36#.. only 2 fish I got, but good ones
Mon am 10/13 - 4 fish in the low-mid 20# class
Thurs am 10/16- 1 fish about 17#
Saturday am(tomorrow)...tbd...still looking for one last good fish.:fishin:
This week last year was just silly for real large fish. Its amazing how things change from one year to the next.
Slipknot 10-17-2008, 11:15 AM Fall fishing is the best
I'm glad I went last night, got my best of the year so far = 37 lbs
I could name the spot and it would not matter today because the fish move this time of year, I will say it was NOT from my usual spot.
Luck and timing have more to do with being successful for me this time of year, and use common sense. Get out there, ya can't catch from the computer
ProfessorM 10-17-2008, 11:41 AM Good for you Bruce
Slipknot 10-17-2008, 11:43 AM thanks Paul :)
good tides coming up:faga:

Recipe? Recipe? Already got a freezer full of tog.

I do hear what you're saying, but the area I think you may be talking about is not where I was. Though re-reading my post I could see how some could make a wild 'guess' that is was there. I'm pretty certain there was cloud cover in that area that night over there anyways so the real good detectives would know that. :laugha:
Your advice has been noted.
Back Beach 10-19-2008, 08:29 AM Saturday 12am-5am= zero
Today 3am-7am= bunch of micros and a 15# fish on top. Nothing on eels in the dark though.
Still a few good ones taken the last few days by some friends up into the mid 30's.
I'm sticking with my assessment...its over for large quantities of large fish. :uhuh:
Patience and wherewithal required from here on in. Single big fish, small pods of fish, and micros on top to finish the year. I'm ready to hang it up for 2008, save for one or two last minute commando trips...

It will be in the high 30's where I'm heading tonight and the wind should drop enough so it will be somewhat comfortable. Hopefully I'll be able to "earn" a couple tonight because I'll be hanging it up pretty soon. I still think there's some good fishing to be had on the Cape and definitely in RI.
ProfessorM 10-23-2008, 01:41 PM I'll be heading out in my tin boat at early dawn tomorrow. Nutin like zipping along at 20 in an open boat with the temp in the low 30's. I must be deranged. Going to have to remember my mittens with the string attached so they don't fall over board
numbskull 10-23-2008, 03:05 PM Slow, cold going, but saw more fish today than I've seen for a month....which isn't saying much. Got enough to make the trip fun. These fish should be in RI shortly. No bait my way to hold them.
These Pentax w60 cameras suck when you need to use a timer.
ProfessorM 10-23-2008, 03:22 PM Nice G. I hope they will be on there way to where I am going tomorrow. Not that far of a swim
Striper_Haven_03 10-23-2008, 05:24 PM Fished this morning in heavy surf with winds NNE around 20-25. Nothing from my usual perch. Then around 7am after walking off the rocks I notice about 20-30 birds diving and whirling about 100 yards down the beach about 150 yards off shore . A bunch of fat bass, probably in the 40-45" range crashing adult bunker. After several attempts to get into casting distance and 10 mouthfuls of salt-water I gave up. To rough when your fishing a east facing beach with 20-25 winds on the incoming.
Might have been my last chance at a decent fish and I blew it! Oh well.
Rockfishroger 10-23-2008, 05:39 PM Went out last weekend to do some early TW fishing,I had numorus blow ups and short strikes on my Zara Spook, but only managed one small rock before sun up.
Here is the one short I caught.I think its going to be awsome fall.

Nice pic. I've been looking into those w60's. Please explain your timer comment.

1) He needs a timer because nobody wants to fish with him, much less take his picture.
2) If he doesn't put up prima facie proof of his catches, some wise guy will question his claims.
3) The picture helps preserve his perceived prowess at catching fish on plugs when I know damn well he used an eel to catch that fish...

ProfessorM 10-24-2008, 12:06 PM LOL. George is the man. Nutin this morning. Beautiful morning, although cold, perfect tin boat day,but it was very mellow out there. A few small fish and no bird action. Pretty dead.
Finaddict 10-24-2008, 12:18 PM Great photos Paul
SAUERKRAUT 10-24-2008, 03:43 PM 1) ...when I know damn well he used an eel to catch that fish...
I was on the beach the last time Numby used an eel: Around 1989 I think. We canoed out to the Nauset Point tip, because the new breach at Chatham created an island and stopped 4WD access. I was catching fish so fast that Numby took off his plug, grabbed an eel, and hooked a fish in 10 seconds. He thought it was cheating...

:laugha: I love it.
As for fishing this weekend, there was a highlight. My 4 year old caught his first bluefish yesterday at east beach. Alas, when you really need a camera none was present.
As for bass, there's plenty of micros and a few decent ones mixed in. I could only manage a 15# fish from the canal Friday night though. Will probably stick to days from here on in...
Moses 10-26-2008, 12:05 PM Took friday off and fished upper Buzz Bay and then Gay Head.
Lots of stripers still in and around Mass Maritime. My buddy lost a big fish on our second drift, practically bringing him to tears. No bird action but drifting eels and rubber sure did the trick.
Gay Head was all big bluefish, not one striper. These fish were puking up small butterfish and squid. I also snagged a few scup fishing lead heads off the bottom.
Water temps ranged from 54 down to 50 depending on where we were. Only bird action we saw was going home across Buzz Bay in between Nashuon and West Island. Blues and stripers chasing some sort of small baitfish.
