bloocrab 11-25-2002, 09:15 AM Have a GREAT Thanksgiving!!!
Whats your normal routine for that day??
Mine has been the same for the last . . . 20 or so years. My father started a tradition of going fishing in the morning while the ladies got things hot in the kitchen. <<Togging and jigging up macks>> We'd usually get back home around 9 or 10 and then I'd head to the park thats behind the Police station and either play HOckey in their tennis court or Tackle Football on the soccer field. (Joining a game already in progress - not everyone likes to fish, CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT???:D
..then shower - chow - watch football - zzzzzzzzzzz - chow again ;)
We haven't done the Hockey/Football thing for a couple of years now. Its a shame how some traditions die. Our newer generations do not comprehend "Tradition".
I will be out on the rocks Thursday morning...not so much to fish - but to keep the tradition that my father started many years ago.
God Bless
Bloo~
mrmacey 11-25-2002, 09:30 AM will not be eating turkey!!! king crab and shrimps are on the menu this year in VEGAS!! everyone have a happy thanksgiving see you when i come homehave a good cod trip!!!!
MountainBreeze 11-25-2002, 09:39 AM Unfortunately, no traditions remain in our family.
But… I'll be eatin' some turkey for sure! :)
Sounds like a good time Bloo! Be safe out on those rocks!
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Best regards,
Rob

STEVE IN MASS 11-25-2002, 10:52 AM Wake up....wake up the wife....have (um, nevermind;))....then start the bread......I got suckered into this about 10 years ago....I made sour dough bread to bring to Mom's.....everyone loved it, so now every year I get "Steve, you ARE gonna bring the bread, aren't you?"
So make three or four loaves, of course Donna and I have to share one hot out of the oven.....head to Middleboro about noon for the feast, bail out Mom with cooking her turkey (though we did make goose one year, and I had to do all of that at her house)....eat, drink, get full....head home and pop in my copy of "It's A Wonderful Life" to start the Xmas season, and try not to let the lipotenes (or whatever they are) from the turkey lull me to sleep too early.....;)
Of course, since the Pat's have a game this year.........
JohnR 11-25-2002, 11:43 AM You too Bloo - and everyone else too...
Used to freeze my butt off at to the Dedham / Norwood HS game on occasion - then back to mom's for Turkey...
No real other traditions and a few that fortunately didn't stick (like raisins in applesauce - Ma, what were you thinking? hehehe)
Soon, I will introduce fishing with my son on Thursday mornings but that will wait a couple years... Also would like to introduce a fresh caught bass with the T-Day meal, just so happens there are some fresh filets in the fridge now
Clammer 11-25-2002, 12:02 PM BLoo to you and your family//
AS you get older and time and your personal lives change traditions change, not always to your liking, BUT thats life
as I say all year long //
ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:p :p :p :p :p :p :p
Saltheart 11-25-2002, 12:21 PM Used to do the high school football game in the morn then home to eat , watch games , nap and eat. then the football gave way to Eat , travel to Montauk thursday night and fish the whole weekend out there. That then gave way to eat and stay home thursday then fish east beach and Misquamicut Friday thru Sunday. Last few years its been eat at my house thursday around 1 pm then travel to central MA and go to another meal at my girlfriends family that evening. Then Fridays we would stay in Ma and brew beer with Smokey and his girlfriend and have another big dinner! :) That's what we will be doing this year.
The really long lived tradition was the football games Thursday morn with my father . We stared that when I was very young going to St Ray's games where he went to high school . Then he would come to my games when I played in high school and for a while when I was in college and just after until he passed away.
The fishing at Montauk was big time for many years ater that. i always did good out there over Thanksgiving and that was where the rigged eels always showed their value. back then it was a 36 inch limit but I would get at least one keeper every day out there and we would barbecue and smoke them right there next to the camper. Always good fishing at montauk that late in the season.
When I started staying in RI to fish Thanksgiving , the big gola was monster blue fish. I guess they came in after the mackeral but we used to catch some monster fish. One year I caught a load of blues that weight out at 23 pounds AFTER GUTTING! Them fish had heads big as a football and could have bitten your whole hand off if you weren't careful.
Anyway , sorry for being so long winded but once got rolling on the memories I got carried away! :)
AS you get older and time and your personal lives change traditions change, not always to your liking, BUT thats life
YEP!!! a lot of tradition has been lost and family members passing .....tends to change things a bit.
latest trend is the parents or inlaws house..........though I have to say it was a nice break last year when the hubby and I vowed to stay home and RELAX TOGETHER......and enjoy his first catch of wild turkey!!!!! A special turkey day for two.......very nice...:D
Canalratt1 11-25-2002, 01:19 PM Our old tradition was rabbit hunting in the morning and Granny's for dinner. I miss those days!
Clammer 11-25-2002, 01:44 PM WELL time to try and make someones Thankgiving a little better
I just found a tools box in the middle of the street== opened it full of relativly new tools--- got to get a ad in the lost & found
lAter, :laughs: :laughs:
Spare Spool 11-25-2002, 02:05 PM Travel, travel and more travel. It's good to see family but the traveling sucks. Since I will be in Joisey, wish I could get down to the shore, but too much to do and too little time while I'm there. Happy Thanksgivng everyone!
STEVE IN MASS 11-25-2002, 02:22 PM Great stuff, everyone....especially Saltheart.....and now he's got me thinking about Friday or Saturday somewhere a bit southwset of here....;)
The Iceman 6 11-25-2002, 02:25 PM Pretty much same here - always the big high-school football game @ 10:30 AM , usually @ the bar for brunch @ 8 AM ;) then off to Aunt's house for antipasta, lasagna, then turkey, italian thing? I didn't mind, then after dinner some tackle football in the backyard with my brothers and cousins, this lasted about 1/2 hour before somebody would go in crying then the game was over. Lately, just Thanksgiving @ Hesh2's house, sometimes turkey sometimes not, the best was the "surf and turf" thanksgiving. A couple of years just celebrated in NYC with wife and some friends who had relatives who lived too far to travel home. Did Thanksgiving Day Parade one year in NYC, figured I lived there the past 7 years, maybe I attend one? ;). Last year, was with my parents and day after Thanksgiving fished RI hard with father and brother, what a day to be on the water, no fish caught however but still an excellent time. This year for the first time going to my wife's mom's house for Turkey Day - her dad passed earlier this year - "have" to be there for her w/o question. Enjoy all. "The more things change the more the stay the same"
Tight lines,
Ice

TheSpecialist 11-25-2002, 03:00 PM Hunting in the am, then chow, and football.
TIM AUBE 11-25-2002, 03:03 PM This year, like most others, it's up early for some yardwork (weather permitting) and a search for those dreaded holiday specials before the noontime feast. After a delicious repast we have a free-for-all battle for "crash-chairs" (You know-what chair will you fall asleep in during the afternoon foorball game.)
I can only state that as my family changes through losses and additions, I believe the most important tradition would be "giving thanks" for all we have. It may sound a little corny but I've found that I have SO MUCH to be thankful for: Great family, great friends, good health, good job and a sense of humor to keep them all together.
As I've stated to my friends and family:"I may have to grow older, but I don't have to BE old!"
I would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday, and to those that will be venturing out on the water, take care and stay safe.
chris L 11-25-2002, 03:44 PM hanging with the family all day .
Scotch Bonnet 11-25-2002, 05:01 PM Like Saltheart, The St. Raphael-Tolman football game was a tradition since I was a kid. A few years after graduating(St Rays) the tradition died off. Now its off to the in-laws in Watertown Ct. for the weekend. When my son is a couple years older I think we'll start the fishing tradition in the morning. Things like that make for great memories.
Bill L 11-25-2002, 06:04 PM I have my own tradition of striper fishing on Thanksgiving morning, running about 8 years now. I'll be on the rocks before sun-up rain or shine (or freezing cold), and more often than not catch at least a few schoolies. Then home to get ready for dinner with family. Hope everyone has a nice Holiday!
bloocrab 11-25-2002, 06:36 PM The best thing about fishing on Thanksgiving, like Scotch said...
- are the Memories -
It's a day when most people don't work. It was easy to coherce people into coming back then. My father would invite his brothers and my mother's brothers, most had rods but for those who didn't...my father would provide. Not that I encourage drinking while fishing, but someone would bring a gallon of home-made wine, someone else would bring a bag of rolls with some St. Georges' cheese and other snacks too...and of course a little bottle of shine. YES, I always got stuck driving home (after 15 yr. that is). Going way back, we'd have a line-up on them rocks - the more the merrier if you don't care if you catch fish or not...but we usually did
I'm pretty sure I'll be flying solo this year, which isn't all bad. Solitude on a day of thanks is always good. One on ONE with the Almighty. We need birthdays to remind us that we're getting older...but we shouldn't need Thanksgiving Day, to remind us to give thanks to the Lord. NO, I'm not a preacher...but a BELIEVER!
Keep em coming~
God Bless
Squid kids Dad 11-25-2002, 07:38 PM Happy Thanksgiving to you to Bloo and everyone else,
We used to have the tradition of going to our relatives or them coming to our house..It was just something to look forward to..The Holidays...A time for family and friends...
Now as we get older..(not that i'm that old..lol) Times have changed...I have gone thru a lot of changes the past few years..Personally that is...I still cherish the Holidays...
This is my familys first holiday with out my Dad..It will be hardest for my Mom i'm sure...But family will be with her to start a new tradition...
Happy Thanksgiving to you all....:) :)
Bazza 11-25-2002, 08:52 PM My wife and I run a 5 k road race in the am (the races motto is "run early eat all day":) . Then off for some family time. We are having her family over for dinner this year.
Have great Turkey Day !!!!!!
its really surprising to see how many go hunting or fishing turkey day morning!!! I cant say we did this in our house (probably because the wives would freak out if my dad draggged the guys through the woods in their "best"......but thinking back(....and never really thought of it as tradition BTW.....) I think they did the next best thing......it always seemed like everyone had brought their new gun or bow over and everyone went outback for target practice!!!!!! ...interesting now that I think about it!
STRIPER77 11-25-2002, 10:54 PM Happy Thanksgiving to Bloo and all !!!!! Alot of the things written here are "Waltonish". I don't mean that in a bad way.I personally loved that show. But, as others have said, times change. If I were to decide to pack heat to go to my high school's football game, the only touchdown I would be looking for is the Cops to pack these punks away to prison. As it is, I'll be trying to convince my son to wake up at 3 A.M. Fri. to join me fishing in Rhody. Last two years--nada.But this year???? My only real Thanksgiving wish (beside All of you Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving) is for sandman to let mrmacey live his life. I'm sure I'm not the only one this is starting to rub the wrong way. Hey sandman, I don't have an Escalade either, but I don't judge people that way.Based on what you've shown here Mrmacey would probably be alot better person to fish with than you.
STRIPER77 11-25-2002, 11:11 PM John---Please put my post "Thanksgiving" as a reply to "Attention All Members"-------Thanks

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Jimbo 11-26-2002, 10:30 AM I've really enjoyed reading this thread, partly because Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday of the entire year. I have Pilgrim blood in my veins from both my mom and dad who are retired up on the Cape. My mom's a tried and true Capee, my dad thinks he is, and my 98 year old grandmother is a washashore some 48 years now, so going to Cape Cod for a traditional Thanksgiving is the tradition (that is, weather permitting in 2002). We also find time to look through the volumes of old Cape pictures my dad has and the stories that go with them and usually find time for a "nature walk" somewhere (Wellfleet out towards Jeremy Point being the preferred spot). I finally got my dad into fishing, so we'll rally the troops and target some spots along Bass River from the railroad bridge to the mouth and see if we can't start a new schoolie tradition, too.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone. Enjoy and have a safe holiday.
nor-easter 11-26-2002, 10:33 AM Happy Thanksgiving to my extended family here at S-B.com.
Thank You Heavenly Father for bringing my course in life to cross with the many folks I had the privelege of meeting and greeting in this year that is fast coming to an end. Strengthen me and my extended Family, Father, that we may know and foillow thy will and that we may come to know thy Son.
Best to All.

Saltheart 11-26-2002, 10:56 AM Congrats on starightening your life out Mr Marcey. Hope the future brings you success and happiness with your family.
Fisherwoman 11-26-2002, 11:33 AM For BC and I we will head to his mom and dads for an early dinner, his dad is cooking the turkey and fixings and I am bringing my scalloped potatoes, their favorite. Then we will come home, load my truck as I will be heading home to see my family in PA about 4 AM Friday, its a nice 10 hr drive but well worth getting home to see everybody, sight my gun in on Saturday, BS with some of my brothers and sister. Then on Sunday we will have a big fish fry with the whole family. Last year was the 1st year we did this as I am the fish provider, LMAO and we really had a ball so we are going to do it again this year, then Monday morning it's bambi season, so will will all be out in force in the woods.
On a scarier note I have been having tests done all week on my abdomen as they have found a large mass in my pelvic area, so tomorrow its more test to try and find out what it is, hopefully nothing serious, the try and relax and enjoy the holiday and the trip to come back and have surgery to remove it. YEE HAA, its always something.
Too all of you, may you be blessed with a wonderful, safe and fish filled or bambi filled holiday. God bless all of you!!!!
MountainBreeze 11-26-2002, 11:38 AM Good luck with the tests Fisherwoman!
I hope all goes well for you!
Best regards,
Rob
Big Vern 11-26-2002, 12:27 PM Right on Mr. Macey! Way to turn your life around. That is something to truly be thankful for. Best wishes to you, yours, and your forthcoming.
JohnR 11-26-2002, 12:39 PM Hey FW - hope all works out well - I'll put in a word for you with the guy upstairs... Say hello to Bill for me too.
JohnR 11-26-2002, 12:40 PM Amen Mr Macey! Keep up the good work, you'll need to because those kids are awesome (at least at this age they tell me :btu: )
Striper77 - I just saw that - I'll put it in there. Personally, I didn't see much beyond some mild ribbing between Sandman & MrMacey
Saltheart 11-26-2002, 12:55 PM Good Luck with your tests Fisherwoman! :)
The Iceman 6 11-26-2002, 01:47 PM Fisherwoman, Best of luck, hope you receive "good news"
Ice
Fisherwoman 11-26-2002, 02:49 PM Thanks everybody, wasn't trying to be a holiday downer, just a little nervous, to have 2 lumps in the body and one is the size of a large orange has me a little edgie to say the least. The other day they told me it was a large ovarian cyst, whcih is no big deal, now they aren't sure!!!!!!!!! SO have another test tomorrow and hopefully it is just a cyst. Either way I will have to have surgery as soon as I come back from PA, which will be the 3rd time in my life they have had to open my abdomen. My body has just about had enough of this SH##. But ya gotta have faith in the big guy upstairs, as I am gonna be fishing by spring!!!!!
I thank you all for your prayers very much.
JohnR, give our love to the misses and the little guy, I really hope you have a wonderful thanksgiving, I know its been a tough year for you as well as alot of members on this board. I am thankful to you for having this site for us all to come together when someone is having a tough time. THANKS!!
Fishpart 11-26-2002, 03:29 PM Thanks to all my friends here.
Mr Macy, thank you for sharing your story with us.
Fisherwoman, you'll be in prayers.
Goose 11-26-2002, 05:02 PM Have a wonderful ThanksGiving:)
oh yeah....and bring on the shot gun opener baby!! ;)
GBOUTDOORS 11-26-2002, 07:38 PM Happy Thanksgiving to all and at this time I would like to thank all here for a great year and the chance to be blessed with so many new friends. Best of wishes to all the new Moms and Dads and most of all thanks to John R for this site. I found this place the day after my mother inlaw passed away last Jan. and Jane and I were in a bad way over this loss. But by having some one to talk to about something other than Our loss at that time made it easyer for me to get by and to help Jane at this very hard time. As for what I always have done on Thanksgiving day until just a few years ago I would be out early to my favorite pheasant field and get a few fresh birds for dinner to go with the turkey but I am sorry to say there are no birds left in the area so now its venison to go with the bird. Oh yea the best part of the meal to me is also the stuffing. God bess to all and thanks for giving your friendship to a fellow fisherman.
Slipknot 11-26-2002, 07:48 PM Fisherwoman, I wish you well with those tests and hope for the best. Stay positive.
Mr. Macy, keep up the excellant outlook and things will keep going well for you. Glad to hear you overcame that downward way of life and turned it around. See ya on the water again.
Bloocrab, and everyone else, all have a wonderful holiday and very Happy Thanksgiving. It won't be much longer and we'll be talking about the Mass Bass show in March.

Got Stripers 11-28-2002, 09:39 AM FW, I'm keeping a good thought for you, hopefully this will be something simple. I'm thinking it's just a new muscle mass from all that late season cod jigging you did:).
Wife is working today as she has most holiday's, but we will have a late diner when she gets home and with the middle son just back yesterday from a month long outward bound stay; it should be one to remember.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday....go pats.

shore manic 11-30-2002, 03:21 AM i gave up 2 weeks ago, you have to be the most dedicated fisherman on this site.i think it's great! keep fishing brother.the (last man still standing get's all the fish) S.Carolina here i come !!!!!!
fishweewee 11-30-2002, 08:36 AM Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. :)
This year I broke tradition.
On Thanksgiving Day me and my brother-in-law were on a 50 foot sport fisher somewhere in the Caribbean sea. Trolling rigged ballyhoo, hoping for a blue marlin bite (not quite the peak season for these billfish).
Specatular hit on the outrigger by a sailfish - (*wow*) and then the fish spit the hook ('dese feesh got tough beaks mon'). :( But, we made up for this by casting tins for some teeny weeny albies and some barracuda.
All in all a great day - got a wicked tan too. :hee: :bshake:
