FEELS like snow this morning :( Bob Thomas 10-29-2008, 04:31 AM Snowing like a bastage in Northern Worcester Cty. last night on the way into work. Was piling up on the lawn. Probably have to shovel when I get home :realmad::realmad::realmad: piemma 10-29-2008, 05:30 AM Was out early. Wind chill feels like it's in the 20s. Got the wood stove roaring. 72 degrees in the whole house with no oil burnt. UserRemoved1 10-29-2008, 05:56 AM Man Paul we been LOVING the pellet stove it's nice and toasty at 68 and only used the family room oil heat zone one night so far. :kewl: Was out early. Wind chill feels like it's in the 20s. Got the wood stove roaring. 72 degrees in the whole house with no oil burnt. Raven 10-29-2008, 06:11 AM how much pellets compared to wood do you think it takes.... to heat the house... better efficiency ,less hassel ? pro's and cons please. Rob Rockcrawler 10-29-2008, 05:55 PM Saw the first flakes getting off the pike today in sturbridge. HAd to look close but they were flying. Rob Rockcrawler 10-29-2008, 06:00 PM Just saw the bit about the pellet stoves. I heat with a jotul wood stove and love it . Neighbor had a pellet stove a few years back and when the prices started to go up with the huge demand he switched to coal. Isnt a ton of pellets about equal tot he output from a cord of wood. I do really like the idea of not having to feed the stove religiously. Living alone and working 12 hours a day its tough coming home from work. My stoves rated efficieny is supposed to be around 80%, there is never any color to the smoke coming out of the chimmney. 5/0 10-29-2008, 06:21 PM Saw the first flakes getting off the pike today in sturbridge. HAd to look close but they were flying. Went to visit Ashbernham MA.and the snow squals were in full effect. UserRemoved1 10-29-2008, 06:22 PM Efficiency? Yea for sure. Don't know the % but it incinerates the pellets in a mini blast furnace. Nothing but fine ash and clinkers left (clinkers are superhot ash that melts together into a lump) A bag of wood pellets is equivalent to a gallon of oil. But the heat is MUCH nicer for the price. If your looking now I wouldnt even bother, the winter pellet prices are over $350 a ton right now. Time to buy is late spring-early summer it's down at $250 a ton. Rob I think your right on the cord=ton Much less hassle. Fill it before you go to bed, it's 64-68 in the house all nite and next morning you fill it again. We're using about 1/2 bag overnight right now. No smoke, no smell, no black ceilings. Best thing I ever did. I'm looking for a used one now for the basement. Now that the boiler isn't running non-stop it get DAMN cold in my office. I'm looking for a small unit on the cheap. Con is if it runs out in the middle of the night or day you gonna be COLD. But so is a wood stove too. What happened to all the snow today. Sky sure looked it but never saw any. Furnace sure didn't stop much in the shop today. how much pellets compared to wood do you think it takes.... to heat the house... better efficiency ,less hassel ? pro's and cons please. Rob Rockcrawler 10-29-2008, 07:26 PM Another drawback of the pellets is the stoves need electricity, better get the battery backup. ProfessorM 10-29-2008, 07:28 PM I still hate that word, Snow. Sux when the power goes out too. Have had that happen several times over the years. UserRemoved1 10-29-2008, 07:30 PM thanks for reminding me I got to measure the current draw somehow and figure out what I need so it will run for 3-4 hours. Another drawback of the pellets is the stoves need electricity, better get the battery backup. Starfish 10-29-2008, 07:39 PM Snow at my rents house in Barre MA this am. Cars were covered when they went out to go to work!! On a side note..... I Heart Snow!:hee: Raven 10-29-2008, 07:39 PM i was just wondering how a pallet of pellets measures up to a cord of wood... for Btu's / value or maybe its two pallets to one cord  of course you need the automated pellet stove But, i've been burning them occasionally and find there's plenty of hot coals in the morning left over... as they seem to burn slower than hardwood overnight. Raven 10-29-2008, 07:41 PM you fart snow....???? wow you could get a job at a ski resort hahahahaha sorry couldn't resist LOL Starfish 10-29-2008, 07:45 PM Heart Raven Heart:hs:...I could get a job as a snowmobile guide...that would be unbelievable! LOL! Bob Thomas 10-29-2008, 09:40 PM Not to hijack the thread, but Salty...what clearance do you need around the stove? I.e. how far does it need to be from the wall and how far do you need to keep things away from it? I'm DESPERATELY trying to find a space to put one in my house UserRemoved1 10-30-2008, 04:19 AM Bob Since pellet stoves aren't Striper related I'll answer this in the scuppers. RickBomba 10-30-2008, 05:50 AM Tynan, you heart snow. I heat JUGS! (bumper sticker on the back of the Avalanche) Miss you guys, Italy sucks~! Sorry Star, thought you were Tynan!
