View Full Version : canal today
stiff tip 10-31-2008, 09:43 AM i got the word from a few buds that the canal had fish passing through, so at 7am i was at pole 100 . birds were workin from the sagmore bridge to the end of the jetty. lots of bait ,birds and seals .birds feeding on small bait ,dont know what it was but lots of it .only saw small brakes ,but was told that some fisherman got a few big ones 25 to 35lbs and someone caught a 51lber on a live snagged pogie . dress warm its cold in the am ....looks like it anit over yet...not many people fishing.
FishermanTim 10-31-2008, 10:26 AM I fished the east end last night, and had the place all to myself.
There were some small fish breaking, but they were few and far between. I managed to get 10 fish, with one taping out at 35".
I was pleased to find that it really wasn't that cold, compared to what they had forecast.
BatesBCheatin 10-31-2008, 11:47 AM haha nice Halloween prank. You guys kill me. Everyone knows all the fish are off of Rhody. :hee:

ilovetwofish 11-01-2008, 03:23 AM Fishing in rhodie is dead there is no fish here. All the fish are off of Jersey.
No fish in RI...They're all at the Canal....:humpty:
why the %$%$%$%$ would you have that as your signature? that happened months ago..
ProfessorM 11-01-2008, 11:41 AM No long undies needed today. Beautiful calm conditions. Lots of tiny bait and birds but not much in the size dept. I was between Sag. and Herr. run. Tomorrow is another story, N. wind and much colder. See you there if your as dumb as me.
plankton 11-01-2008, 02:36 PM Yeah, nice day today, birds working at the east end over pods of schoolies, caught a few of them, nice way to end the season...for stripers anyway.

Glad I took my peck of quahogs today, then. Nice weather plus the opening day of oyster season tomorrow (place will be a zoo) made today the better bet.
Might take another shot at the schoolies tonight. Then again, after I released my last fish last night, I put the jig hook on my reel's handle, took up the slack, picked up my bag, and climbed the bank. That might be a nice way to end the season. :uhuh:
ProfessorM 11-01-2008, 06:53 PM You are a smarter man than I Mike. You are right, a good way to go out.
Mike P 11-01-2008, 09:56 PM Well, you knew I had to take one more crack at them :humpty:
Same place, same tide, gorgeous night, not as many as last night, but once again, landed one (actually close to keeper size), sent it on its way, hooked the jig to the reel and left them biting.
And believe it or not--I actually had a 7" RonZ chopped by one of those yellow eyed devils :err:
7milebridge 11-01-2008, 10:15 PM Fishing in rhodie is dead there is no fish here. All the fish are off of Jersey.
I fished yesterday on my way home, and thought I would just throw a couple casts, because I had only 30minutes in between meetings. Next thing I knew I had a monster on my line. As I pull this beautiful bluefish in it managed to snap my brand new tica rod. It was a monster I measured it at 38.5". Little did I know after filleting this fish that the state record was 39". I would have pulled a fall river special and stretched the lip. What a fight.
Anyways anyone saying there is no fish in Rhode Island must not be using a hook ;). not trying to be a punk, but I am just letting you know there is awesome fishing in Rhody right now. It has been lights out for a few weeks now, and the water temp is holding strong at 54-55. so there is still a week or two left.
This is only picture I managed, but to put it in perspective the pencil popper in its mouth is 7" long.

A 38.5" blue is a true monster - Equal to a 50+" bass for bluefish standards. ;) You may have had a record since it goes by weight and not inches - 26lbs. Too bad you didn't get a better pic as well.
ilovetwofish 11-02-2008, 03:31 AM You caught the only fish in RI and I live here and fish here.Still know fish in RI.

I think you're right cuz why else would he post a RI fish under the canal thread. :conf: All of the fish are now off of RI and not in the canal or RI.
Time to get out to Montauk for first light. Damn the sunrise is early today. :rude:
Mike P 11-02-2008, 07:35 AM There is no state record I know of for inches--only pounds, and I think our record is something like 27 pounds and change. If you believe that a 38" bluefish could ever weigh 27 pounds.....a 38" bass couldn't weigh much more than 22 pounds.
Are we at the point where we are now measuring bluefish in inches instead of pounds? :wall:
ruhroh 11-02-2008, 07:51 AM He caught the fish in R.I. and said that the record fish was 39" long, not that the record was 39".
Are we at the point where we are now measuring bluefish in inches instead of pounds? :wall:
LMAO:hihi:
Sea Dangles 11-02-2008, 08:17 AM When is flap going to chastise stiff telling him he is burning a spot and there will not be enough room to fish there as a result of this post?
7milebridge 11-02-2008, 08:30 AM I never said that the record was based on inches just the record fish was 39" long. I am also not spot burning. Just saying that there is good fishing in Rhody right now. as far as why would I post on a canal blog thats a simple question. How many rhodies have chimed in on my fish on a " Canal post". There are fish in Rhody.
ilovetwofish 11-02-2008, 11:40 AM Nice fish but there is still no fish in RI.

Too funny.
20lb would be my guess.
Hell of a bluefish!

According to those weight measurement stats taken from New England catch records I found online at another site:
The average 39" bass weighs 24.5 pounds. The upper limit of the range is 27.2 pounds. (Yes this sounds a bit heavy to me).
This easily falls within the range of Rhody's record bluefish which is 39" and 26 pounds. I tried to find a pic of that fish online but couldn't. I'll try harder later. Must have been a real pig.
ProfessorM 11-02-2008, 02:21 PM Man it was cold this morning at day break. I was starting to think I must have lost my mind to be there. Not many guys out either. I rode several miles before I crossed paths with anyone. Wasn't lucky enough to get any fish but saw a lot of breaks and had many chances at getting some but the fish were not interested. Not all these fish were of schoolie size IMO.. I did not see anyone get a fish on top, even if you hit them in the head with the plug. I did see adult pogies and something else about 3 to 4 inches being chased. Most of the bait I saw the fish feeding on were the size of a half dollar though, very small. Don't waste your time getting up early either as they were not showing till an hour after the turn the last 2 days, at least in the area's I was fishing. On a positive note I spotted a very large fish while on the bike out in the middle for 100 yards following some bait had one chance at him, dumped my plug bag off the bike in my haste, and he wasn't interested, but a very big bass. I did see 1 keeper on the rocks in my travels. I did not go further east than pole 125 or west past 275. I'm a middle of the canal kind of guy anyway. May try again tomorrow morn. but not too early. Good luck.
FWIW I had an 18 lb blue that was 36 inches long in 1993
Mike P 11-02-2008, 02:44 PM The average 39" bass weighs 24.5 pounds. The upper limit of the range is 27.2 pounds. (Yes this sounds a bit heavy to me).
Uh, no it doesn't. I catch between 500 and 1000 bass a year--naturally, not all of them are 39" long, but I've been catching bass a long time. 40+ years. One 39" bass in 1000 weighs 24.5 lbs. Most weigh between 19 and 22 pounds. Especially today with the skinny bass that currently dominate the population.
Get one 42" and then maybe you're talking 27 pounds. If it's fat and has something in its stomach. I've seen 50" bass this year that didn't break 40 pounds. It's certainly possible for a 45" bass to top 40 pounds, but again, it's one bass out of a thousand. And the girth has to be enormous for it to do that. Bluefish simply don't have the girth to top 20 lbs at 38".
numbskull 11-02-2008, 03:32 PM I think the other source of error is that most people nowadays measure fish from the tip of the tail (sometimes even squeezed together and over the curve of the body) as per state reg guidelines. Most record fish (and fish estimated by length/girth formula) are measured by fork length on a flat surface. Makes a significant difference.

45", 44#

other prizes to boot
ProfessorM 11-02-2008, 04:13 PM That was a very fat fish if I remember correctly. I had 2 fish that went over 50 " this year and none went past 46lbs. All I got was $3.50 a lb. You got a better deal.
7milebridge 11-02-2008, 04:58 PM Well the best part about all of this is. I didn't weigh the fish, and can only say from what I caught it was deffinetly in 20-25 pound range, but I am not into arguing that fact. The best part of the story that all fisherman a like enjoy is the fight this beast put up while standing on shore. It was a true beauty of a fight. I wanted to release this beauty, but for one, it broke my TICA pole, and for seconds one treble was in the lip, and the other was jammed in the gills. All things aside I know it wasn't a record, but a true champion blue in my books. pound for pound it put up a fight that only stories of 50 pound bass have been told to me by the old salties. This blues stomach had 3 or 4, 7-9" full shads in the belly.

I'm agreeing with you that's why I said those figures I posted are high. :spin: They must be very old or possibly measured to the fork. The stats on SOL do seem much more realistic.
Bluefish simply don't have the girth to top 20 lbs at 38".
Of course they do since the Rhody record is 26lbs. at 39" :D Although certainly an anomaly there must be plenty of blues that went 38" and went over 20lb.

That was exactly the one 45" fish in a thousand I was referring to ;)
beaver 11-03-2008, 11:46 AM The ditch wasn't so bad this morning. Not too sure if all the sea herring are off shore stiff ;)
stiff tip 11-03-2008, 01:59 PM hay thats good to know ...but most r offshore w/ the bass
Flaptail 11-04-2008, 10:05 AM When is flap going to chastise stiff telling him he is burning a spot and there will not be enough room to fish there as a result of this post?
I already yelled at him in person. Besides he rides a bike along the canal and anyone who rides a bike spends more time pedaling and yacking to other bikers than actually fishing.
Canal biker reports are basically worthless info.
Moses 11-04-2008, 09:34 PM Beautiful conditions at canal this morning but unfortunately no quality fish. A couple twinkies landed and a couple bigger ones spotted chasing large bait in the middle several times.
Some pics.....
ProfessorM 11-05-2008, 09:03 AM Beautiful pics Mike. That is the same situation I encountered last few times out.
BatesBCheatin 11-06-2008, 04:23 PM Many small fish around chasing small bait last night. Gorgeous night out there - 10 knot east wind, warm, no crowds, and very little rain. Just needed some bigger fish to make it perfect.
Finaddict 11-06-2008, 11:20 PM Beautiful pics Mike. That is the same situation I encountered last few times out.
You are not kidding, those are beautiful pics, very nice and thanks for sharing.
