Is there a need to color preserver metallic therad in rod building? I am building a rod with gold metallic and black therad?

With gold underwrap and black overwraps , you should be Ok without cp.

If you are going to use metallic thread try to get the HT metallic.
The HT is much stronger than the regular type

Thanks Mike That is what I got. It worked great. I have got all the under wrap and have the reel seat and cork wrap all done. Just have to put the guides on. That will be done in Black thread and I will cp this.

if you want a true Black do not use any CP on the Black thread.

I once used orange and black for a rod and did not use cp and the rod is now brown and black.
Won't the black run onto the gold if I don't use cp

This is why I need to go to your rodbuilding class.

All metallics will hold their color without CP. as far as colors running they do not. what happened is lighter colors absorbe the epoxy when no CP is used making them translusent and showing the color which is below it.
if you use White thread with out CP on a Black blank it will turn grey/black

Thanks Mike again !! I will not use the CP. I will be putting the guides on today.
I won't be doing the epoxy till Sun or Mon as I have to work the rest of the week. I work Graveyard Wed thur Sat. with 3 days off a week. I have already put in for Fri the 24 of Jan off so I can't get to class and learn somethings on a good night sleep.

I don't like using cp but sometimes you can get a surprise. I once wrapped an Arra rod with nylon red thread and no CP. When I epoxied it , the red went purple like the blank under it! Fortunately I had only done the taper at the end of the cork tape so it wasn't much work to take it off and do it over with CP.

Well saltheart I have not been doing this very long but when that rod went from orange to brown I was ready to cry. I haven't had the problem since.
But I won't lie I am very scared that this gold and black is going to blend toghter some how. I really like the way this rod came out I think it is the best looking rod I have built to date. But
I am going to probly epoxie it on Fri. as the snow will be here and I have nothing to do. I am taking Mikes word that it won't. I am putting him on the spot now.

The only way you can have a problem is if you did not pack the thread tight enough.

Well the rod is done it is on the dryer as we speak. It came out nice and the colors did not blend. You can ck it out by going here

thats a sweet rod. ive been making lures for a while and now after seeing that i think im going to try to build a rod this winter. how much would it cost to make something like that?

Thanks Christian. This is my 9th rod that I have built and the best looking. It is not that hard to do. The way you make them lures this would be a walk in the park.
You should see if you cn make the rod making class it would be great. You do need the basic before starting. This is the first rod without a mistake in it! I belive in trial an error.
That rod is a 7 foot St Corix e=glass fm70 ($40) then I think I have about $40 more in a real seat corkwrap, guides, Thread, Flex coat.
I use a old rotersie motor for a grill ($1) in a yard sale for a dryer motor
Well take from me I am far from good at this but have learned alot. I hoping to lear alot more at the class. I amsure that I am doing alot of things wrong. Or can learn to do a better way.

i have some books in my attic on rod building from when my dad made a few a long time ago. he made a couple fresh water bass flyrods. i have been looking for stuff that might be useful for rod building down my base ment and i found a whole box of slow speed motors with little speed control dials. they would probally be perfect. ive been thinking about going to those classes but first ill ask my dad to see if he could help me build one.
