Anyone ever do the monster shark tournament off the MV? i am trying to gather some info on that tournament for next year as when it is and the rules of the tournament. I have a friend who is a charter captain in Bermuda and i do a few marlin tournaments with him each year. he was up here all week and said he wanted to do a shark tourney and we were discussing entering that one in the vineyard next year.
thanks for any help

check out:

I ran into the guy who won either last year or the year before...he did so on the smallest boat in the tourn. (24') I think he said he got a big mako. I don't know how big the tourn is.

I know Montauk has a big one. You may want to look into that too. I was there one year when it was being held...some monster fish were brought in.

suggestion: Never bring a mako in the boat unless you're *sure* its dead!

great advice and unfortunately i learned that one a number of years back on a small one ( 125lbs) and had to replace a cooler that he swatted with his tail ( better than hitting me in the leg though) . Yes mako's will certainly be the target for that tourney unless someone gets into a great white or something crazy. I think it will be time to live line an false albie for that tournement

you know, last summer a Island netter caught a small great white in a net only a mile or two out side the harbor in vineyard sound. They did not know it was a great white. It sat on the deck in the hot sun most of the day and when they got back someone said it was a great white and they got an expert to check it out. In the meantime they put it in a pen with seawater and it came back to life...everyone was amazed...and it was pissed. Sharks are harder to kill then most people think. They look dead but they will still bite you in the ass if you give them a chance. I don't like the big ones in the boat at all.

A looong time ago I got a 350# mako and we put it in the boat (36'). (big mistake) This thing prodeed to thrash the hell out of the cockpit and busted up a bunch of gear. It is a scary thing to see them on board. They have a serious set of choppers to boot.

There is a cool photo in a recent fishing mag I picked up at the airport the other day shows a big one going wild in the cockpit and the crew running for cover...one guy was approaching the fish with a bat! (yeah like that is going to hurt him) I think it is the lastest copy of sportfishing...it has a 40' bright red CABO on the cover.

I don't do much shark fishing (prefer to eat tuna myself) but when my kids get bigger I will take them on a trip...it is an experience you don't forget. If you fish it tell me the name of the boat...I will see you at the weigh-in.

Kav:

I guy I work with has fished it before, I will see what info I can get from him. He's out of town for a bit, so I'll talk to him when
he returns.

Guess what kind of boat he has and what size !!!;)

Hint...Twin OBs.

Mr. Sandman, I think the guy in that 24' boat caught a world record in that tournament. he ran out of gas because they couldn't get it in the boat and the fish brought them so far from homeport. I remember reading about it.

good luck Mr. Kav and be CAREFUL.

thanks slip will do better safe than sorry.

van, let me guess he is in the proline club right?

no steve, i have a feeling that a live albie might be a little more effective in this case who knows a giant bluefin could swim by and nail it as well.

chickens huh?

NOTE TO SELF:
