View Full Version : Ever think of just checking out?
RIJIMMY 11-20-2008, 04:32 PM I dont know if its the thought of hitting the Big 40 next year or the realization that I am deeply immersed in the rat race, or if its the current economic climate but I have been thinking about just packing it up.....move to somewhere like Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Live in a small town, get a basic job, 9-5, no more laptop at home unitl 11pm 3 nights a week, raise my kids in a small town. Someplace where I can walk to a local pub, no worries of crime, no worries of war, no worries of terrorism. Just live day to day.
ProfessorM 11-20-2008, 04:46 PM Novie is beautiful. My moms side of the family is from there. Don't go there if you got a drinking problem though as there ain't much to do. Wait till you turn 50.
Jim Dont watch American Beauty tonight.. ok? :hihi:
Duke41 11-20-2008, 05:05 PM Trust me this economy will have folks checking out wether the want to or not.
The Dad Fisherman 11-20-2008, 06:03 PM I've considered it....I.T. has been driving me nuts for a couple of years now
JohnR 11-20-2008, 06:06 PM I actually like my IT job (for the most part) and it beats what I've done in the past.
You could do that in Maine, or in a part or RI or two. The dinero part is the hard part....
spence 11-20-2008, 06:13 PM I saw this thread and though RIJIMMY was on a suicide watch :err:

tynan19 11-20-2008, 06:45 PM ^^Me too. All the time Jim, Northern and Western Maine is like that.
fishbones 11-20-2008, 08:22 PM If it wasn't for my son, my wife and I'd probably have moved to Roatan years ago. Live in paradise where English is spoken and the cost of living is cheap. They even have American trained doctor on the island. I guess I can always look forward to retirement in 30 - 35 years.

Other than logging or touristing I have no idea what people do for a living up there.
I go up there several times a year for the past 30 years, still haven't any idea.

No way.
Canada looks good - you could work a no-mind job and still have basic health care. I read an article a while back about the extreme poverty and terrible access to health care in rural Maine - bad.

I know...its like a grass is greener thing....but i've been doing IT since the 1st IBM PC was around....dual floppy no hdd......20 some odd years and people still can't figure out to try shutting it off and turning it back on :wall:
striperman36 11-20-2008, 10:05 PM you mean that fixes stuff?
Like it doesn't work during a power outage?

We have a friend who was living in western Maine for several years. One time she mentioned this new boyfriend that she was really excited about...he had a "lot of firewood".
Enough said.

Call Karl or have him call you when he's ready to sell, perfect place for ya.
RIJIMMY, no I never thought about just checking out, I have thought about moving away from it all though many times. I'd love a nice simple cabin away from it all, grow my own food, catch and shoot my own meat, live off the land, have some wind power or waterwheel of some kind etc. but I guess I don't want to be far from my other family and the ocean, so i stay here and make boxes :)
Raider Ronnie 11-22-2008, 08:23 AM When I was the title the 1st thing that came to mind was an old Cheech & Chong skit about suiside.
something like this....
All bummed out and thinking of ending it all?
Well come to Empire Hancock.
7 diving boards and no waiting.
30 stories straight down insuring our hits no misses guarantee.
ect............................................... ................
I haven't listened to it in a long time and can't remember all the lines.
RIJIMMY 11-22-2008, 09:24 AM no, no suicide for me, thanks for the concern though.
I spent some time in Europe in 2001 and was amazed at how simple life seemed. You go by poor rural areas and they were so neat and clean. No abondoned cars, no piles of crap. I moved back to the east coast 8 years ago from Califrona. My wife and I had a mattress, a computer, a small tv, 6 guitars, a few amps, a stereo, a few thousand cds and our clothes. That and our car was all we owned. 8 years later, I have a 4 bed room house, a garage so filled with crap I can barely park my car, a cellar loaded with crap, more fishing stuff that I can ever use, piles of kids toys they never use.........what the hell happened?
I keep thinking of the J. Giles song " I must have got lost, somewhere down the line"
Back Beach 11-22-2008, 09:44 AM I haven't considered it. Stand,fight, and take your lumps...it builds character.....:rumble:
Most people in the world are waaaaay worse off than we are. I do like a nice getaway once in a while though.:smokin:

Mike, ever been to Tuscany? My wife and I stayed in a castle (literally constructed in 701 AD) there for $425 a week in 2001. Every day we went to a different hill town, drank the best wine and ate the best food. I can see you running a vineyard there with the family recipe.
people know how to drive on Italy. On the highways, you pass and then move to the right, no cruising in the passing lane. People go 100+ and then move out of the left lane. I loved it.
The Dad Fisherman 11-22-2008, 01:10 PM There's no Room in Tuscany....
My Ideal job would be Brewmeister at a Golf Course on the Cape....Brew some, Quick nine and off to the surf for some fishin'

What happened was you grew up and joined the rat race. It's easy to live simply and carefree when it's just the 2 of you. You come and go as you please. If you want to sleep until noon after being out late drinking, you do it. When you have a kid or kids, you're whole life changes. You suddenly have to be more responsible and think about someone other than yourself.
saltydog 11-22-2008, 04:27 PM NO, never thought about me checking out:wall: BUT have thought of checking a few outhers out:smash::devil2::uhuh::fury::jump1:
GOOD LUCK GOOD PLUGGIN:love:
P.S. every day ABOVE GROUND is a GOOD day for me.

Haven't been to europe. Wine country was the most relaxing trip I've ever been on besides my honeymoon to Hawaii.
There's a great little place less than one hour from where I live that fits the bill too. You can't hear anything but the wildlife....no trains, cars, etc. Don't want to burn it though....
tynan19 11-25-2008, 09:08 AM Spent the weekend in Maine and In a perfect world I would be able to split the summer on the ocean and the winter in Maine. Went up to a buddy's house for some trail work for the snowmobile club. It always amazes me how nice the people are up there. A lot more willing to lend a hand to strangers. Wife and I got a little lost trying to find a certain snowmobile bridge on a private dirt road and when we turned around a worker was coming down to check us out and see what we were doing. I explained why we were up there and he no lie said in true Mainer Fashion " You can't get there from here". He asked if I knew the other way in and I said no. He said well then follow me. :btu:
tynan19 11-25-2008, 09:10 AM My dream house just happens to have a friend as an owner. :crying:Bet you didn't know Starfish was a Ninja.
