View Full Version : Toys When You Were A Kid!
BigFish 12-02-2008, 10:10 PM So what were some of your all time favorite toys when you were growing up??
Big Wheel (Wore out 2 of them)
G. I. Joe (The real ones)
Legos, Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoys, Erector Sets (Anything to build with)
Tonka Trucks (When they were made of heavy metal)
Matchbox/Hotwheels
redneck24 12-02-2008, 10:14 PM definately big wheels and matchbox
baseball cards (toys to a kid)
atari/ nintendo
dukes of hazzard anything
redcrbbr 12-02-2008, 10:55 PM we used to make our own big wheels out of tricycles. tonka trucks that were made from real metal. One of the best toys I remember having when I was a kid was probably about a 4-6 yard pile of sand that my Dad dropped in the yard one day. took about a year to move it with the tonkas. matchbox or Hot wheels when they first started coming out. wish i had those now.
Another toy if you want to call it a toy were roof shingles. had this old shack that had been torn down. whoever tore it down left a huge pile of shingles. boy could those things fly a long way, also used to play war using specially crafted sticks for guns, and not to mention the actual rock fights with kids from another neighborhood. ahhh the good ol days
gone fishin 12-02-2008, 11:42 PM Homemade slingshot made from auto inner tubes, leather pouch and a tree crotch. Could break a bottle at 25 yds.
Red Ryder bb gun.
Kiddie Kart
Flexable flyer sled.
No TV ( color wasn't out yet!)
No Nintendo or video games.
etc.............:jump:
Crafty Angler 12-03-2008, 01:26 AM Hmm..one memorable Christmas I got:
A Roy Rogers bedspread and a pair of RR six-gun cap pistols - guess that's why I've always found A Christmas Story so funny
The Visible Man model - I ended up painting his liver the wrong color when I was building the model :hihi:
A gas-powered model airplane, it was a Navy Corsair, damned near took my first 2 fingers off with that one, started it up right in the kitchen...
And a trumpet...
In retrospect I suppose my folks were trying to inspire me to pick a career - either a doctor, a cowboy, a pilot or a...musician, I guess, although they were widely known to smoke a lot of reefer at the time...I dunno...
So in spite of all that I ended up being...honestly, I'm not sure what really.
Guess I'm still trying to figure out what I wanna be when I grow up...
UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 04:29 AM matchbox racing set. Big Jim, Big Josh (hey whatta ya want I had two sisters with barbies) Legos, Lincoln Logs, Etchasketch, Billy Blastoff-and I still got all the original stuff like the spacecrawler :), pitchback
The best one though was working in my dads wood shop.
BigFish 12-03-2008, 05:52 AM Scott.....I had the "Billy Blastoff!" He had all those conveyors and stuff that moved when you stood him on the stands??? He was cool!! Had a "Big Jim" too! Press his back and "Hiy-aaaaa"....karate chop! Bet you had AFX Slotcars too?? Jackie Stewart edition with "Magnasonic" sound??!:bounce: We had the first TV video game too.....Atari's "Pong"!!! Riveting, non-stop action....2 speeds.....slow and slower!:jester: Hey it was a big deal at the time! Johnny Bench "Pitchback".......ahhhh simpler times!
Duke41 12-03-2008, 06:43 AM Bonanza Wagon Set. With Little Joe. Played with that for ever.
A football game called Strategy..loved it
Many bikes, they were our horses back than. we would ride the entire town.
The best one of all was when my dad came home after months and months on a submarine.
Raven 12-03-2008, 07:09 AM the whamo  air ball shooter
fun to shoot the angora cat :o ( totally harmless )
it shot a grapefruit sized "ball of air" to like 15-20 feet
and nerf balls too..(adaptation) 30 feet
Chemistry set - advanced model .... i like spice :btu:
the hockey table small with the redish brown puck
with the sliding men attached to rods that you could push and twirl simultaneously for wicked fast action
probably the best fun was with the hot mini cars that ran on the track....getting a new one of those was always a thrill... then ya modify it....and trick it out.
a small telescope.... and of course fishing rods.Gear.
i loved getting that build your own radio kit....at a very young age... when you finally completed it and heard radio on something you built yourself -you felt very much like BOND ....James BOND or Thomas Edison :btu:
BigFish 12-03-2008, 07:19 AM Crafty....I had the "Visible V-8"!:kewl: Do kids build models anymore??
UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 07:33 AM nope never had anything more than the matchboxes Larry. Never had a video game til I met my wife. Our first date we went to dinner then back to her apartment and opened up the present she got for her brother and we played Super Mario for 6 hours that night :hee:
I don't remember the karate chop, I had alot of clothes for them though. Big Josh was his buddy :hee: They had a commando camper with wheels and a back that folded down and that was awesome. I can remember playing with those in the basement pretty well. I got into scouts and somewhere around 10 I got interested in radios and electronics so everything else was no fun by that point. Space Invaders after school at Corrados Pizza there was a kid that could do scores like you never seen.
Kids don't like that stuff nowadays though I got to say my 5 year old loves his legos, lincoln logs, and he's got a train set that fills the entire room with tracks and buildings and that is a definite hit. Those are timeless toys...and ones that build on creativity and thought :kewl:

redcrbbr 12-03-2008, 08:09 AM thought about a couple of other ones.
the water propeled rockets, rockem sockem robots
bassackward 12-03-2008, 08:21 AM Larry and Salty reminded me of Big Jim and his rescue rig which brings back memories. He had a band you put on his triceps that when you bent his arm it would explode off.
How about the Evil Knievil action figure with wind up motorcyle and ramp. That thing was indestructable.
Did anyone have the Six Million Dollar Man with the eye you could look through? A part of his arm would pop off, exposing the bionic arm. I had many battles with Gi Joe, Big Jim and Steve Austin.
Stretch Armstrong. You could pull him into riduclous lengths without him breaking.
Real cap guns!
UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 08:24 AM I had a real nice telescope when I was a kid. I think my parents spent alot of money on it and I'd spend hours and hours outside at night looking at stuff. That was a big thing back then. But like alot of stuff when I was a kid I didn't take care of things and I think it got dented at some point. Looking back that was a regret. Wish I still had it. I bought one a few years ago when Mars was close figuring Thomas would like it but man for $400 what a piece of crap we never could make it work right.
the whamo  air ball shooter

Real cap guns!
UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 08:27 AM My red bike. First bike I ever had without training wheels. Man I could ride that thing everywhere no hands. I used to see how fast I could go down the street into the driveway and into the backyard handsfree :hee:
Not quite that daredevil anymore.
SKATEBOARDS...I lived on a hill and had a banana colored skateboard.
Home made wood go karts.
TREE FORTS
wow there's some good memories. Great thread Larry.
BigFish 12-03-2008, 08:28 AM Rockem Sockem Robots was the best!!! I had that Evel Knievel.....that was fun! I do remember the arm band!
Salty......I do not believe for a second that you were looking at "the sky" with that telescope!! You naughty boy!:rotflmao:
Plum Crazy 12-03-2008, 08:37 AM Funny thing, I don't remember many "toys".
I was outside ALL the time.
Skating and sledding in the winter. (seems like we had snow in FEET back then)
Kickball or whiffle ball game every single night in the warm months and my bike.
We didn't come home till after dark (when the streetlights came on).
Left as fast as we could eat our Cheerios in the morning.

BigFish 12-03-2008, 08:52 AM Travel back in time nothin'.......still got some of mine!
The Dragon Wagon.......my all-time favorite Tonka......this is my original! Thanks goodness it was tucked away in my folks basement for years! Also my little midget Jeep!:kewl:
BigFish 12-03-2008, 08:55 AM This Tonka Car Carrier was a gift from my parents for my 5th birthday! I can still remember how thrilled and grateful I was for such a great gift! It used to have 2 ramps that came off the back so you could drive your cars on!! This truck I got on Ebay a few years ago......unfortunately the original was lost over the years!
The Dad Fisherman 12-03-2008, 08:57 AM I still have a couple of these figures kicking around.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGFVQX7zc50
BigFish 12-03-2008, 08:58 AM This truck also is my original! This Coke truck used to have little plastic cases of Coca Cola and a 2 wheel dolly to complete the package! Used this alot! Great story.....this truck was lost to me for years until one of our neighbors was moving and came across it in her garage! Man was I surprised.....like getting a visit from a long lost friend! Note how the neighbor knew it belonged to me!

UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 09:11 AM I have that spacecrawler in my basement all packed away. Most of the accessories still too. They're not worth anything but memories. Good one's.
Larry I'm gonna KNOCK YOUR BLOCK OFF :hee: Rockem Sockems WOW I had those too I forgot about them. Red and Blue I think they were. I was the king of rockem sockem
UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 09:15 AM TDF! I had that moon tractor too. Wow another one I've forgotten about. THAT was my ALL time fave Billy Blastoff toy. The tracks were so well used they both broke and it got thrown away I think. Alas another thing gone :(
wow. Great memories. I've never thought about looking this stuff up on youtube.
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:16 AM TDF....I had "Fort Apache", "Battleground" and the Civil War version called "The Blue and the Gray"! Spent friggin hours on the floor with those!:btu:
Oh...had "Guns of Navarone" too!
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:19 AM Lets race!! Here is my set....I still got it! My favorite car was always the yellow 55 Shoebox! I can see them heading into the turn now! Best part....it still works and I have all the parts!:humpty:
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:21 AM I had Johnny West too! Man that brings back memories! I had all the action figures! Anyone remember "Action Jackson"???:laughs:
Raven 12-03-2008, 09:30 AM Aurora !! yeah that was it....
we had this train tunnel over the track and we'd let the cat chase the car into it and stop.... cat would look in other end...and we'd back up.... cat would switch to front and we'd speed ahead....
freekin cat would go so mental that it was tons of fun...
as much as fishing for cats with a catnip mouse and then some...
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:35 AM I still got my older Brothers Aurora cars too!!
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:37 AM SPIN OUT!:hihi:
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:40 AM We built our share of go karts! Dozens of tree forts too! I can still hear my Dad yelling at me for getting into his tools!!:jump1:
Raven 12-03-2008, 09:41 AM my brother figured out how to cheat those cars...
first he'd take a razor blade and slice little slots into the
tires for more traction like tire tread....
then he'd sand the pancake gear i think... to make them lighter... special oil for wheel axels and the whole bit...
got to be a real down in the pits competition for awhile
Crafty Angler 12-03-2008, 09:43 AM Crafty....I had the "Visible V-8"!:kewl: Do kids build models anymore??
Damn, BF, I had that too!...:uhuh:
Boy, this is a trip in the Wayback Machine!
Raven 12-03-2008, 09:43 AM my Dad had everything outlined... in white on pegboards
and everything had it's place....
when you were a bad boy... your sentence was to organize the shop until it sparkled like a treasure room
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:51 AM This the stuff?
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:53 AM My Brothers....vintage mid-60's! I remember the oily smell from running them for hours on end!! Our basement was a myriad of slotcar and train setups on plywood on top of our old pool table and ping pong table! Those were great days!
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:55 AM If you guys got em'....lets see um!
Raven 12-03-2008, 09:56 AM don't shake the table man

BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:57 AM Ja ever notice that guy was missing the most important "bone"?:hihi:
Crafty Angler 12-03-2008, 09:57 AM God, I just remembered my Dad and my step-grandfather Harold making me a complete set-up for a Lionel train set on plywood that Pop painted and put the little trees and people on it and everything, it was pretty detailed, Pop did a beautiful job- big Christmas surprise for a 7 year old!
It had the log-loader and everything, nice transformer, two different engines and you could put the pellets in one of the engines to make it smoke...and the whole thing was on casters so it would slide under my bed.
Man, I used to love that set-up, wish I had it today.
Sorta got in trouble one time...... me and my cousin Richard got caught staging head-on train wrecks...:hihi:
Pop wasn't real happy with me, either.
"For Chrissakes, what the hell is wrong with that kid?"
Raven 12-03-2008, 09:58 AM yeah..... and there was never a female version either
women didnt have operations.....just babies lol
BigFish 12-03-2008, 09:59 AM Chuck...that last line is priceless! I think we all heard that one!:hee:
The Dad Fisherman 12-03-2008, 10:05 AM Anyone remember "Action Jackson"???:laughs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8gQKZmtAfM
Raven 12-03-2008, 10:06 AM Crafty there was this guy that lived across the street that was insane with model trains
i mean really wacky insane... he was like 7'4 inches tall and only weighed like 160 to 180 ...like a spider
and he'd cruise the railroad tracks just to see them...
he wore a train engineers hat most of the time....
he could take one step and you'd have to almost run to keep up...
he walked with one hand out palm up always for his pet white rat to sit on and he went everywhere
because when he walked ...you'd have to be on your bike..... to stay with him... or forget it...
he was quite harmless but his train set up occupied the whole basement and it was done in such detail that it should be in the Smithsonian museum...
it was every train lovers dream.... seeing it...
BigFish 12-03-2008, 10:22 AM Good morning Mrs. Bullock! Can Scott come out to play??:hihi:

UserRemoved1 12-03-2008, 10:40 AM I have an original Lionel O27 gauge train set from the early 60's all stored. It's ALL metal. 3 track rails. All the buildings to go with it too. Pristine condx. Needs a transformer only which was never affordable back them when it blew. They're everywhere now.
Raven...operation roflmao My sister had that :hee:

I had that! too cool!
My fav toys and big christmas presents for me were star wars toys, I remember that if you collected the first 12 figures and sent in the proof of purchase, you got the Boba Fett figure free.
Funny, these toys are still popular over 30 years later
TheSpecialist 12-03-2008, 11:01 AM I had an AFX Change the lane, the one with no slot.

I had a bunch of those Star Wars figures and the space ships, X-wing fighters, etc... I remember pulling the arm off Luke Skywalker and telling everyone that Darth Vader cut it off with the light saber.
I also had the Lincoln Logs, Legos, Rock Em' Sock Em's, the Evil Kenevil motorcycle and bus and half a garage filled with sporting goods.
But the thing I liked playing with most was the little girl who lived diagonally across the street. She was so cute with her little white knee highs and pig tails. If I only had half a clue as to what I should have been doing. Oh, the good old days.

Raven-I did a lot of growing up on my grandfathers farm. When the work was done and it was time to play you had to be pretty "inventive" when it came to toys. In fact anything and everything had potential of becoming a toy if you thought hard enough about it!
Maybe later I will enlighten you on my 101 things you can create with used bailing twine! (we werent allowed to "waste" the new twine but used twine was fair game):btu:
fishbones 12-03-2008, 09:23 PM another board game
My wife found that game in her mom's basement and brought it home for our 3 1/2 year old son. He loves it. Of course, he makes me set it up and then he just wants to set off the chain of events that puts the "rude mouses in jail". He gets so excited watching the whole thing.
maddog2020 12-03-2008, 11:04 PM Broom sticks and old tennis balls we would find around the courts to play stickball, Dad's basketball, card games w/ std deck of cards, chess, Tinkertoys and Lego.
Must be why I am good at building things with whatever is available. :)
My buddy's family was wealthy and he had the slot cars and cool stuff like that.
My uncles had some trains, but we never had enough room to do a good layout. I still have my old 'N' gauge engine, cars & some track - whole layout fit on sheet of plywood that was 2' x 4' - sitting in my Dad's old Cardinal 7X box in the cellar. Hey any of you guys remember Eric Fuchs that use to be in Government Center in Boston? Lots of great stuff - dunno whatever became of them. Use to have another place called Hobbytown close to combat zone - that places had coolest models (plastic and balsa) and lots of RC stuff.
TV - tubes in the back - letting off a ton of heat w/ that distinct glow.
Didn't have to worry near as much about being molested, kidknapped or murdered like now a days. :(
All this technology for what? Life was simpler and better back then IMHO.
Raven 12-04-2008, 06:07 AM this was my favorite toy.. :Dhttp://www.burghfieldsailing.org/images/pagemaster/laser_1.jpg
i had a sunfish Nebe.
My Mother won it in a contest...
i used to sail that thing everywhere in Buzzards BAY
i'd love to have the "Hobie Adventure Island" as a go out and sail & fish - fun craft.... as i miss those days.
But it's a huge investment ! not to mention the length
is 16 feet...long... i like the retractable pontoons the best... it would be great to have netting across them
and be able to slide a big ole Bass up there.... :uhuh:

The Dad Fisherman 12-04-2008, 08:17 AM Anybody remember Stingray and Chopper Bicycles?
Stingrays had tha Banana seat and Choppers were the ones with the small front tire.
Raven 12-04-2008, 08:24 AM i had the high rise handle bars and banana seat
on a new Schwin for delivering newspapers...
it was great because you could swing your legs out
still riding side saddle for a quick running dismount ...
BigFish 12-04-2008, 08:44 AM Had a Stingray....5 speed!
The Dad Fisherman 12-04-2008, 09:26 AM Ever do the extended forks in the front....get that lowrider effect
ProfessorM 12-04-2008, 09:33 AM sand lot baseball, street hockey, pond hockey, basketball and foot ball took up nearly most of my time. Just don't see any sandlot baseball anymore. We had a pissa place and met there everyday for several hours of non adult supervised fun.
Crafty Angler 12-04-2008, 09:39 AM Can't believe I found this one...:eek5:
On the back of the old black and white Polaroid my dad wrote:
"Christmas Eve - 1959

I sure was.
Thanks, Pop, thanks Ma - it was really neat!
Raven 12-04-2008, 09:48 AM i remember the day i decided to do the longest skid mark (leavin Rubber) via a bicycle in History....
with my brother's bike of course... :jester:
I sat at the top of the hill contemplating where i should
apply the brakes to keep from Crashing into the wooden fence.... at the bottom of the col de sac ...
And i was off.... 20, 30 , 40 mph, pedaling down hill like i was on fire
rushing to the nearest body of water....
then i decide to apply the brakes thinkin.... this
will be good for a 40' skid....
well it was a real BAD idea because i mis judged
how many feet i needed to stop at that speed before
i'd wipe out...
as i neared the curb skidding in a perfect straight line leaving the coolest skid mark in the world
...i crashed that front tire so hard into the tar curb that i not only dented the rim so it was un ridable
but my head snapped downwards on Impact...
So FAST that
i smashed my forehead into the center of the handlebars with a big ole KAwack !!! that made me see stars and tweety birds... for awhile
after walking the bike home in a concussion stuper...
i looked in the mirror at my forehead... in Ultimate HORROR to see this HUGE freekin egg of a bump there...
i looked more like a UNICORN... it was so NASTY lol :hihi:
The Dad Fisherman 12-04-2008, 09:48 AM That is a great Pic....The Invisible Man....always wanted one of those.

Toy M16 Replicas.
We used to play "Vietnam"
We'd set up ambushes in the woods, take turns playing the VC, set up booby traps, do mock tortures of prisoners.......
Good times.
The Dad Fisherman 12-04-2008, 10:24 AM we used to do this thing called "Survival Tests" we'd pick one kid to be the leader and he would come up w/ all these "feats of skill" (translated: Stupid Things to Do)...jump off this wall, climb this fence, crawl through these thornbushes.....if i showed you one of the rock Cliffs we used to use a garden hose to repel down.......you'd have me committed...man it was fun though
Saltheart 12-04-2008, 11:07 AM When I was a kid I had a nice cannon. it was a modern artilery design about 8 inches long. It had a spring loaded breech that took a "bullet" about 1 inch long and 1/4 diameter. we used to set up these dinasour figures I had and shoot them over using the spring loaded canon.
It was great fun and I bet i would enjoy shooting at them dinasours even today as a 55 year old kid! :)
